"This title run-in is going to be epic."

That was the view of former Celtic striker Chris Sutton after he had just watched his old side stage a two-goal comeback in a seismic Old Firm derby.

However, even after that second-half fightback at the home of their city rivals, Hearts still ended the day as the big winners, watching the carnage unfold after grinding out another win 24 hours prior.

Following an enthralling 2-2 draw at Ibrox, Derek McInnes' Scottish Premiership leaders are six points clear of Rangers and eight ahead of Celtic, who have a game in hand against Aberdeen on Wednesday.

Motherwell also have a match to spare and sit fourth, 10 points adrift of the summit but within touching distance of the Glasgow pair.

So, amid one of the most captivating title fights in the history of Scotland's top flight, what is the state of play for each of the four clubs involved?

India secured a T20 World Cup semi-final showdown with England after a tense five-wicket victory over West Indies thanks to Sanju Samson's scintillating unbeaten 97.

Samson produced a chanceless knock off 50 balls - hitting 12 fours and four sixes - as India chased down 196 in a thrilling winner-takes-all encounter to round off the Super 8 stage at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

The tournament co-hosts' triumph ensured they claimed the runners-up spot in Group 1 behind South Africa which sealed a meeting with Group 2 winners England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday (13:30 GMT).

India had never chased more than 173 to win a World Cup match in the 20-over format, and were indebted to Samson's level-headed approach.

Tilak Varma's 27 off 15 balls was the next highest score by an India batter which underlined the composed manner in which Samson held together India's reply.

Fittingly, Samson was there at the end to hit the winning runs - striking a six and then a four off Romario Shepherd to get India over the line with four balls to spare.

Earlier, India had been sloppy in the field after they had inserted West Indies which had allowed their opponents to post a competitive total.

There was tetchiness and a few cross words as India dropped three catches - Abhishek Sharma guilty of one particularly poor fumble - and a missed run-out chance.

Roston Chase was unexpectedly handed an opening slot and provided stability with his measured aggression - top-scoring with 40 off 25 - to help West Indies reach 102-1 before Jasprit Bumrah put the brakes on.

Bumrah outfoxed Chase with a slower ball then snared Shimron Hetmyer, West Indies' standout batter in the tournament, for 27 with a delivery which angled across and took a thin edge as the left-hander tried to hit across the line.

Rovman Powell and Jason Holder reignited the innings with unbeaten knocks of 34 and 37 to help West Indies reach 195-4 but it did not prove to be enough once Samson settled in.

Arsenal: Ugly or a tactical masterclass? Gunners set-pieces prove decisive again

Another day, another set-piece masterclass from Arsenal.

The Premier League leaders were far from their best in a tight 2-1 win against Chelsea but two goals from well-worked corner routines proved enough to return the Gunners five points clear at the summit.

Arsenal's prowess from set-pieces has been a huge part of their title challenge, having now scored 16 times from corners - three more than anyone else - and equalling the most in a single Premier League season, alongside Oldham in 1992-93, West Brom in 2016-17, and the Gunners themselves in 2023-24.

First William Saliba nodded in after Gabriel's initial header from a corner, before fellow defender Jurrien Timber met Declan Rice's delivery to power in his third league goal of the season.

As well as being clear of second-placed Manchester City - albeit having played a game more - the Gunners also have a 100% record in the Champions League, they are in the Carabao Cup final and into the FA Cup fifth round.

But questions remain about the manner in which Mikel Arteta's men are winning games.

Chris Sutton, a former title winner with Blackburn Rovers, told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Set-piece Arsenal, again. I think they are going to win it. If they get over the line - will they be the ugliest Premier League-winning team in history? The performance wasn't there."

Former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira added on Sky Sports: "When you are top of the Champions League and Premier League table, you expect Arsenal to go forward. It was difficult for Arsenal to take chances. The expectation is higher, you expect more from Arsenal."

But Gunners boss Arteta said: "It's not ugly, you have to play the game that is there for you to play, and against Chelsea, you know exactly the game you're going to play.

"For me, it's a beautiful game to play because there is so much quality and you have to adapt so much to what they do, and they have to do the same against us, so the margins are very, very small, and the duels at the end decide these kind of games."

And ex-Everton midfielder Leon Osman told BBC Sport: "They relied on set-pieces again, as they have all season. If it's a strength, I don't see why you wouldn't utilise your strengths."

Michael Carrick: Would it be more of a gamble by Man Utd not to appoint him full-time?

Six wins and a draw from his seven games in charge means it is seven and two overall for Carrick, who beat Arsenal and drew with Chelsea in the Premier League during his first stint as temporary boss following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dismissal in November 2021.

That equals the joint-best return from the first nine games as manager from anyone in the competition's history.

Ange Postecoglou had that record on his own, but the way it turned out for the Australian at Tottenham underlines the point that not too much can be read into current form.

But the sustained singing for Carrick as he made his way round the pitch with his players on a lap of appreciation after the final whistle - missed by Luke Shaw after he was substituted in the first half due to illness - suggests the supporters have already delivered their verdict.

United's powerbrokers, though, may be wary of moving too fast by making a permanent appointment.

Seven years ago, Carrick was part of Solskjaer's backroom team as the Norwegian started his temporary tenure with eight successive wins in all competitions and took 32 points from a possible 36, then finished the campaign with eight from eight games after he was confirmed in the post.

But, with Thomas Tuchel already extending his contract with England and Carlo Ancelotti about to with Brazil, providing Carrick can navigate the club's journey back to the Champions League, we are already reaching the point where it would look more of a gamble not to hand him the job permanently.

It is beginning to feel more of a risk to appoint Glasner - despite his Europa League and FA Cup triumphs - when he leaves Palace at the end of the season.

Or Roberto de Zerbi, whose football is undoubtedly excellent - or any of the other candidates, rather than stick with someone who has gone about his work in such a calm and unfussy way while, crucially, dealing with the spotlight constantly trained on Old Trafford.

By instinct, Carrick does not feel comfortable talking about his own part in United's advancement. Answers tend to be prefaced with the word 'we' rather than 'me'.

However, the 44-year-old was willing to concede that having his song echoing round Old Trafford was a pleasant feeling.

"This place means a lot to me, so to have so much positivity, with everyone enjoying coming to the games and obviously for me to have an influence on that, of course it feels good, I'm not going to lie," he added.

"The players have to take a lot of credit for that in terms of what they put on the pitch.

"It's certainly not all me but I think that connection with the supporters is huge and to feel that and for them to stay with us, even after that start, and to finish like that, means a lot, yes."

Barry Hawkins beats Jack Lisowski to win first Welsh Open title

Hawkins, who was beaten by John Higgins in the 2018 final, took control early on, winning the opening frame with a break of 105.

And although Lisowski drew level in the second frame, Hawkins would then go on to win six in a row.

Another century break in the fourth frame came in between three half-century breaks of 67, 76 and 88.

The afternoon ended with another Hawkins frame, as he led Lisowski 7-1 going into the tournament's final session.

Lisowski, who was playing in his first Welsh Open final, showed great fight when the game restarted, putting together back-to-back century breaks to remind his opponent there was still work to do.

The 34-year-old then came out on top of a 40-minute frame which swung both ways to reduce Hawkins' lead to 7-4.

But Lisowski's momentum was ended in the following frame, as a long safety shot from Hawkins resulted in a red ball finding the bottom left pocket of the table.

And Hawkins made the most of the opportunity, putting together a break of 68 to put him on the cusp of victory.

Lisowski managed to win one more frame, with a break of 53, before Hawkins clinched the Welsh Open title in the 14th frame of the final.

"I was very poor despite trying my best," said Lisowski.

"Barry was by far the better player today and he deserves his win.

"He's been great to me my whole career, even when I was very young. He's always given me the time of day so I'm very happy for him."

Iran's group matches in what would be their fourth consecutive World Cup are against New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, then Egypt in Seattle.

The team were not withdrawn from the competition last summer when the US bombed three nuclear facilities in the country, but the head of its football federation has now reportedly cast doubt on their participation.

"With what happened... and with that attack by the United States, it is unlikely that we can look forward to the World Cup, but the sports chiefs are the ones who must decide on that," Mehdi Taj is reported to have told Iranian television., external

But in the aftermath of the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and amid huge uncertainty over the future political landscape in the country, predicting such a decision - or even who would make it - is impossible.

"For Tehran, this is not a short 12-day war or a contained round of escalation that can be paused and reset," said Dr Sanam Vakil - director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at international affairs think-tank Chatham House.

"This new stage of conflict is existential and clearly about regime survival. It is also unlikely to end quickly."

Fifa - football's world governing body - has said it is monitoring developments but, at this stage, officials are privately saying they expect Iran to be at the World Cup. On Saturday, Fifa's general secretary Mattias Grafstrom said "our focus is to have a safe World Cup with everybody participating".

BBC Sport has asked Fifa what it would do if Iran were to boycott the tournament amid suggestions they could be replaced with an alternative team from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

On that basis, Iraq, who could qualify anyway via a continental play-off at the end of the month, or the UAE, who missed out on qualification, would be favourites to step in.

Iran's women's team, meanwhile, are preparing for their first match of the Asia Cup in Australia, with the squad training as planned on the Gold Coast on Sunday.

The AFC said in a statement that it continued to "closely monitor the recent developments in the Middle East during this challenging period...we are in close and regular contact with the Iran women's national team and officials on the Gold Coast and are offering our full support and assistance."

At a pre-match news conference on Sunday, Iran coach Marziyeh Jafari stuck to football, saying the tournament was a chance to show "the potential of Iranian women".

歐盟外交與安全政策高級代表卡拉斯（Kaja Kallas）於1日晚間召集歐盟各國外長，以視訊方式舉行臨時外長會議。在經過3個小時的討論後，發布了聲明。

（中央社記者施婉清開羅1日專電）美伊戰火延燒，杜拜竟成戰場。一名常駐杜拜5年多的台商幹部吳天麟，在當地近距離親身體驗「戰爭現場」後，向中央社記者感慨和平的可貴，也體悟到，好好吃飯睡覺，並保持體力這些基本功，是承受長期不確定的基礎。

28日美國與以色列聯手空襲伊朗，伊朗也隨即展開報復，針對中東海灣國家的美國軍事設施進行反擊。阿拉伯聯合大公國（阿聯）第一大商業城「杜拜」，瞬間從奢華天堂淪為驚悚現場。

屬於全球重要國際航空樞紐之一的「杜拜國際機場」（Dubai International Airport），部分設施遭無人機襲擊受損。杜拜棕櫚島（Palm Jumeirah）費爾蒙（Fairmont The Palm）五星級飯店，因無人機遭攔截後的碎片而起火。杜拜傑伯阿里港（Jebel Ali Port）一個泊位，被碎片擊中燃燒。超豪華七星級「帆船飯店」（Burj Al Arab），外牆發生小規模火災。杜拜地標——828公尺世界第一高樓「哈里發塔」（Burj Khalifa），附近攔截到導彈。

台灣拍檔科技中東分公司總經理吳天麟向中央社記者表示，他的住所就在杜拜機場旁不遠處，平常居高臨下看飛機起降是他的日常享受。而從住所到費爾蒙飯店或哈里發塔，也都在10來分鐘的車程距離內。

28日這一天，他收到政府手機警示：「留在室內避難」後，就不敢再踏出家門。

戰火延燒至1日。吳天麟說，直到1日下午，仍可清晰聽見傑伯阿里港附近傳出的爆炸聲。他冒險出門觀察，上午的家樂福還算平靜，下午卻已人山人海，「恐慌性搶購」人潮和車潮，焦急地排隊等進購物中心，大家深怕明天就沒東西吃。

吳天麟也在熟悉的商店內，和店員互相交換親身體驗「戰爭」的難忘心得，彼此眼中都是無法言喻的複雜情緒。經歷這一切後，吳天麟只有一句感嘆：「和平無價！」

網傳杜拜一些生鮮外送平台嚴重延誤，因為訂單爆量。阿聯媒體「國家報」（The National）證實超市出現囤貨潮。超市業者也不斷喊話「供應鏈沒問題」。

Spinneys超市總經理基達（Warwick Gird）在媒體呼籲：「請只買需要的，不必囤積。」然而，民眾的恐慌感似乎已蔓延開來。

阿聯政府也在1日公告，呼籲私營企業員工遠距辦公，並避免戶外活動。

On Polymarket, $529 million was traded on contracts tied to the timing of the attack, according to Bloomberg. An analysis by analytics firm Bubblemaps SA found that six newly-created accounts made a profit of $1 million by correctly betting that the U.S. would strike Iran by February 28 — behavior that could indicate insider trading.

The bets might merely reflect broader speculation about U.S. intentions in Iran, but Bubblemaps CEO Nicolas Vaiman said the circulation of information “involving war or conflict,” coupled with Polymarket’s anonymity, “can create incentives for informed participants to act early.”

Back in January, analytics firm Polysights also noted an apparent spike in bets around the likelihood that Iran’s now-deceased Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei would no longer hold that role by the end of March.

Google looks to tackle longstanding RCS spam in India — but not alone

As persistent spam complaints have clouded Google’s Rich Communication Services (RCS) push in India, the company is turning to deeper carrier integration to bolster protections on the platform.

On Sunday, Bharti Airtel, India’s second-largest telecom operator with over 463 million subscribers, said it had partnered with Google to integrate the carrier’s network-level spam filtering into the RCS ecosystem in the country. The move is aimed at strengthening protections against unwanted messages and fraud on the platform, the companies said.

India has emerged as a particularly challenging market for spam and fraud across messaging channels, driven by the country’s vast mobile user base, rapid growth in digital payments, and aggressive enterprise marketing practices. In 2022, complaints about unsolicited ads on Google’s RCS — delivered primarily through the Google Messages app — were significant enough to prompt the company to temporarily pause business promotions on the platform in India. However, some users continue to report frustration with spam messages on Google Messages, suggesting the issue has not fully abated.

Airtel said it had been cautious about deeper alignment with Google’s RCS until traffic could be routed through its own spam controls, highlighting carrier concerns about rising fraud risks.

“We had not onboarded Google because we first wanted RCS messages to be routed through the Airtel spam filter,” an Airtel spokesperson said.

Under the partnership, Airtel’s network intelligence will be combined with Google’s RCS platform to enable real-time checks on business messaging, including sender verification, spam detection, and enforcement of users’ do-not-disturb preferences. Airtel described the move as a “global first” for integrating a telecom operator’s spam filtering directly into an over-the-top messaging platform, though the companies did not provide comparative details.

“We are committed to continuing to work with the broader ecosystem of carriers to create a consistent and trusted messaging experience for RCS users around the world,” Sameer Samat, president of Android ecosystem at Google, said in a statement. The comment signals the company may look to extend the model beyond India as it works to standardize security across the RCS ecosystem.

India represents a critical market for Google’s messaging ambitions, with more than a billion internet users and over 700 million smartphone users. The country is also home to over 853 million WhatsApp users, according to World Population Review, underlining the scale of competition in mobile messaging.

Prabhu Ram, vice president for the industry research group at CyberMedia Research, said the deeper carrier integration reflects efforts to plug longstanding weaknesses in rich messaging ecosystems that have been vulnerable to spam and fraud.

“The efficacy of this partnership should be reflected in metrics such as reductions in spam volume, user complaints, and fraud incidence, as well as improvements in engagement with legitimate messages,” Ram told TechCrunch.

Airtel has been stepping up its anti-spam efforts over the past year, saying its AI-led systems have blocked more than 71 billion spam calls and 2.9 billion spam messages, helping drive a nearly 69% drop in fraud-related financial losses on its network.

More broadly, Google has been positioning RCS as the successor to SMS, saying in May 2025 that the standard was handling more than a billion messages daily in the U.S., based on a 28-day average.

Google did not say whether similar carrier integrations are planned for other markets or provide estimates for how much the move could reduce spam and fraud.

Investors spill what they aren’t looking for anymore in AI SaaS companies

Investors have been pouring billions into AI companies over the past few years, as the technology continues to hold sway in the Valley and thus the world. But not all AI companies are grabbing investor attention.

Indeed, even as it seems every company these days is rebranding to include “AI” in its name, some startup ideas are just no longer in favor with investors. TechCrunch spoke with VCs to learn what investors aren’t looking for in AI software-as-a-service startups anymore.

Popular SaaS categories for investors now include startups building AI-native infrastructure, vertical SaaS with proprietary data, systems of action (those helping users complete tasks), and platforms deeply embedded in mission-critical workflows, according to Aaron Holiday, a managing partner at 645 Ventures.

But he also gave a list of companies that are considered quite boring to investors these days: Startups building thin workflow layers, generic horizontal tools, light product management, and surface-level analytics — basically, anything an AI agent can now do.

Abdul Abdirahman, an investor at the firm F Prime, added that generic vertical software “without proprietary data moats” is no longer popular, and Igor Ryabenky, a founder and managing partner at AltaIR Capital, went deeper on that point. He said investors aren’t interested in anything, really, that doesn’t have much product depth.

“If your differentiation lives mostly in UI [user interface] and automation, that’s no longer enough,” he said. “The barrier to entry has dropped, which makes building a real moat much harder.”

New companies entering the market now need to build around “real workflow ownership and a clear understanding of the problem from day one,” he said. “Massive codebases are no longer an advantage. What matters more is speed, focus, and the ability to adapt quickly. Pricing also needs to be flexible: rigid per-seat models will be harder to defend, while consumption-based models make more sense in this environment.”

Jake Saper, a general partner at Emergence Capital, also had thoughts on ownership. To him, the differences between Cursor and Claude Code are the “canary in the coal mine.”

“One owns the developer’s workflow, the other just executes the task,” Saper continued. “Developers are increasingly choosing the execution over process.”

He said any product dealing with “workflow stickiness” — meaning trying to attract as many human customers as possible to continuously use the product — might find themselves in an uphill battle as agents takeover the workflow.

“Pre-Claude, getting humans to do their jobs inside your software was a powerful moat, but if agents are doing the work, who cares about human workflow?” he told TechCrunch.

He also thinks integrations are becoming less popular, especially as Anthropic’s model context protocol (MCP) makes it easier than ever to connect AI models to external data and systems. This means someone doesn’t need to download multiple integrations or build their own customer integrations; they can just use the MCP.

“Being the connector used to be a moat,” Saper said. “Soon, it’ll be a utility.”

Also, no longer en vogue include the “workflow automation and task management tools that enable the coordination of human work become less necessary if, over time, agents just execute the tasks,” Abdirahman said, citing examples, mainly public SaaS companies whose stocks are down as new AI-native startups arise with better, more efficient technology.

Ryabenky said the SaaS companies struggling to raise right now are the ones that can easily be replicated, he said.

“Generic productivity tools, project management software, basic CRM clones, and thin AI wrappers built on top of existing APIs fall into this category,” he said. “If the product is mostly an interface layer without deep integration, proprietary data, or embedded process knowledge, strong AI-native teams can rebuild it quickly. That is what makes investors cautious.”

Overa, what remains attractive about SaaS is depth and expertise, with tools embedded in critical workflows. He said companies should right now look into integrating AI deeply into their products and update their marketing to reflect that, Ryabenky continued.

“Investors are reallocating capital toward businesses that own workflows, data, and domain expertise,” Ryabenky said. “And away from products that can be copied without much effort.”

OpenAI reveals more details about its agreement with the Pentagon

By CEO Sam Altman’s own admission, OpenAI’s deal with the Department of Defense was “definitely rushed,” and “the optics don’t look good.”

After negotiations between Anthropic and the Pentagon fell through on Friday, President Donald Trump directed federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s technology after a six-month transition period, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said he was designating the AI company as a supply-chain risk.

Then, OpenAI quickly announced that it had reached a deal of its own for models to be deployed in classified environments. With Anthropic saying it was drawing red lines around the use of its technology in fully autonomous weapons or mass domestic surveillance, and Altman saying OpenAI had the same red lines, there were some obvious questions: Was OpenAI being honest about its safeguards? Why was it able to reach a deal while Anthropic was not?

So as OpenAI executives defended the agreement on social media, the company also published a blog post outlining its approach.

In fact, the post pointed to three areas where it said OpenAI’s models cannot be used — mass domestic surveillance, autonomous weapon systems, and “high-stakes automated decisions (e.g. systems such as ‘social credit’).”

The company said that in contrast to other AI companies that have “reduced or removed their safety guardrails and relied primarily on usage policies as their primary safeguards in national security deployments,” OpenAI’s agreement protects its red lines “through a more expansive, multi-layered approach.”

“We retain full discretion over our safety stack, we deploy via cloud, cleared OpenAI personnel are in the loop, and we have strong contractual protections,” the blog said. “This is all in addition to the strong existing protections in U.S. law.”

The company added, “We don’t know why Anthropic could not reach this deal, and we hope that they and more labs will consider it.”

After the post was published, Techdirt’s Mike Masnick claimed that the deal “absolutely does allow for domestic surveillance,” because it says the collection of private data will comply with Executive Order 12333 (along with a number of other laws). Masnick described that order as “how the NSA hides its domestic surveillance by capturing communications by tapping into lines *outside the US* even if it contains info from/on US persons.”

In a LinkedIn post, OpenAI’s head of national security partnerships Katrina Mulligan argued that much of the discussion around the contract language assumes “the only thing standing between Americans and the use of AI for mass domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons is a single usage policy provision in a single contract with the Department of War.”

“That’s not how any of this works,” Mulligan said, adding, “Deployment architecture matters more than contract language […] By limiting our deployment to cloud API, we can ensure that our models cannot be integrated directly into weapons systems, sensors, or other operational hardware.”

Altman also fielded questions about the deal on X, where he admitted it had been rushed and resulted in significant backlash against OpenAI (to the extent that Anthropic’s Claude overtook OpenAI’s ChatGPT in Apple’s App Store on Saturday). So why do it?

“We really wanted to de-escalate things, and we thought the deal on offer was good,” Altman said. “If we are right and this does lead to a de-escalation between the DoW and the industry, we will look like geniuses, and a company that took on a lot of pain to do things to help the industry. If not, we will continue to be characterized as […] rushed and uncareful.”

Honor says its ‘Robot phone’ with moving camera can dance to music

Ahead of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, the Chinese company provided more details about the device, including how the robot can respond to different situations without commands. The company said that it is planning to launch this device in the second half of this year.

Honor said that the robot also has a “personality” and can respond to you with “head shakes” and can also dance to the beat of music. The company noted that users can talk to the assistant on the phone through text and voice. Honor showed a video of a person asking for apparel suggestions, and the robot nodding or shaking to suggest an outfit.

The phone has a 200-megapixel camera on a moving robot three-axis gimbal with stabilization tech. The company said that the camera can smoothly rotate around and capture smooth videos and photos. It also has a Super Steady mode for video capture. The company said the phone can get cinematic shots through its Spinshot feature that makes the robot camera rotate by 90 or 180 degrees.

The robotic camera also allows for more fluid video calls that can track you through AI-powered object tracking. The tech is like Apple’s Center Stage on steroids if it works.

The company said that it developed its own micro motor to control the robotic camera’s movements. It noted that it used some techniques used in foldable phones to make the camera more sturdy and fit the four-degree-of-freedom gimbal system into the body of a phone. Honor said that it is using the same materials for the robotic arm as the Honor Magic V6’s hinge, with 2800 MPa tensile strength.

Honor launched its new foldable, the Honor Magic V6, with a massive 6,600 mAh battery and a new sturdy hinge ahead of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.

The Chinese company has been obsessed with proving that it makes the thinnest foldables. This year’s version is 4mm thick when unfolded and 8.75 mm thick when folded. Compared to last year’s Magic V5, which was 4.1 mm thick when unfolded and 8.8 mm thick when folded. We are talking very thin shavings here, but that helps the company make those claims.

The battery is possibly one of the most impressive parts of the phone. The Honor Magic V6 has a 6,600 mAh battery, up from 5,820 mAh last year. Using Honor’s SuperCharge tech, the phone can charge at 80W through a wired connection, and at 66W wirelessly.

What’s more, Honor also showed a new Silicon-carbon battery tech with 32% silicon density that could push foldable phone battery over 7,000 mAh.

The new device has a 7.95-inch main AMOLED display with 2352 x 2172 pixel resolution and a 6.52-inch cover display with 2420 x 1080 pixel resolution. Both screens support LTPO 2.0, which means they can switch to variable refresh rates between 1-120Hz for different use cases for better content legibility and power saving.

The company said that it has worked on a new Super Steel Hinge with a tensile strength of 2,800 MPa, which would make for sturdy long-term usage. It also said that it has reduced the crease depth by 44%, making the display look smooth. Honor noted that the Magic V6 has a new anti-reflective coating for the external screen with a reflectivity rating of 1.5%.

The phone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, has 16GB RAM, and 512GB of storage. The Magic V6 has three rear cameras: a 50-megapixel main camera with f/1.6 aperture, a 64-megapixel telephoto camera with f/2.5 aperture, and a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera with f/2.2 aperture. On the front, there are dual 20-megapixel cameras with an f/2.2 aperture.

Anthropic’s chatbot Claude seems to have benefited from the attention around the company’s fraught negotiations with the Pentagon.

As first reported by CNBC, Claude has been rising to the top of the free app rankings in Apple’s US App Store. On Saturday evening, it overtook OpenAI’s ChatGPT to claim the number one spot, a position that it still held on Sunday morning.

According to data from SensorTower, Claude was just outside the top 100 at the end of January, and has spent most of February somewhere in the top 20. It’s climbed rapidly in the past few days, from sixth on Wednesday, to fourth on Thursday, then first on Saturday.

A company spokesperson said that daily signups have broken the all-time record every day this week, free users have increased more than 60% since January, and paid subscribers have more than doubled this year.

蟬聯台灣18年進口車銷售冠軍、累計銷售超過32萬輛的Toyota RAV4，第六代新車終於在台灣上市，除了高妥善率、省油等優點為基礎，此次Toyota RAV4在外型、內裝都進行大規模升級，從操作體驗到駕馭感受一舉達到全新高度。

Toyota RAV4採用與車身同色的最新水箱護罩，有著一致的Toyota家族風格。

堪稱家喻戶曉的日系進口休旅車代表Toyota RAV4，在車界擁有難以動搖的地位，從第三代開始就在台灣獲得出色的銷售成績，經歷幾代演變，從最初的越野風格，逐漸朝向都會導向，也可看到用車模式的變化。

本次試駕為第六代RAV4旗艦車型，採單一2.5升Hybrid混合動力，在新一代的混合動力技術提升下，除了動力提升之外，油耗也更出色，加滿油的續航里程可超過1,000公里，幾乎可以環島一圈也不用加油；若切換到純電模式，不只行駛中媲美電動車的寧靜駕乘感，也能體驗到各方面都有感升級。Toyota更針對混合動力的大電池提供長達8年或16萬公里的保固，讓車主放心用車無後顧之憂。

在相同的TNGA平台規劃下，RAV4第六代在整體尺寸上與第五代相去不遠，卻有著截然不同的顯著改變，以hammerhead雙髻鯊車頭搭配與車身同色的水箱護罩，讓RAV4第六代有了更為氣派的全新氣象，同時比照Toyota新世代家族風格，旗艦車型外觀配有專屬的18吋雙肋五幅雙色切削鋁圈、雙刃光條式的LED日行燈、足踢感應電尾門、天窗、車頂架等，稍嫌可惜的是並未具備全景天窗的選擇。

在車尾也可看出RAV4第六代的俐落感提升，刻意淡化並縮小Toyota品牌識別廠徽，RAV4字樣除了被放大置中在車尾中央之外，更透過金屬字體強化存在感，彰顯RAV4第六代朝向更精緻、更高質感的樣貌。

旗艦車型配置18吋雙肋五幅雙色切削鋁圈，視覺感出色，輪胎尺寸為235/60 R18，兼顧行車舒適性。

旗艦車型標配車頂架，可額外加裝車頂箱，增加置物空間。

RAV4全車系皆採LED直豎式尾燈組，夜晚識別度佳。

科技面再提升駕駛與乘客舒適感倍增

雖然是全新座艙樣貌，RAV4旗艦車艙延續過往的易用操作規劃，從方向盤快捷鍵到中控的功能仍為實體按鍵，手感操作上更為紮實。RAV4同時大幅強化科技體驗，旗艦車型配置12.3吋數位儀表板與12.9吋日本原裝中控螢幕主機，操作測試後發現，使用流暢度與操作便利性都相當出色；首度導入的TOYOTA Connect智能聯網系統，從手機App可遠端開啟空調、窗戶等，透過科技力為車主提供更多便利性。

由於空間表現原本就很出色，前後座乘客都能體驗車室的寬敞，RAV4為了強化舒適度，旗艦車型雙前座皆有通風加熱功能，雙後座更首度具備加熱功能，為長輩或怕冷的乘客提供暖心的配備。

楊梅重大車禍》連假訪友遇死劫妻女雙亡駕駛命危

轎車左轉遭大貨車撞飛

昨天二二八連假最後一天，桃園市發生二死一命危的重大車禍。六十三歲朱姓男子駕駛白色LUXGEN轎車沿楊梅區高鐵南路七段行駛，左轉時疑未禮讓直行車，被對向由卅九歲羅姓男子所駕駛大貨車撞上，巨大撞擊力造成朱男多處骨折且昏迷經送醫仍在急救中，其同車五十七歲徐姓妻子與廿九歲朱姓女兒因傷勢嚴重送醫急救不治。

警、消調查，這起事故發生在昨上午八點廿五分許，家住新竹的朱男駕車搭載妻、女打算去桃園市新屋區訪友，沿高鐵南路七段，行經楊新路四段交叉口左轉時，與對向直行由羅男所駕大貨車對撞，猛烈撞擊造成轎車噴飛數十公尺、嚴重毀損。

桃園市消防局獲報調派消防人員十四名、消防車二輛、救護車六輛趕往現場救護，朱男被救出送醫急救、尚未脫離險境，同車的朱男妻、女兩人皆因傷勢過重現場失去生命徵象，經送醫搶救後均告不治。

警方對雙方駕駛酒測，結果均為零。詳細的肇事原因和雙方車速仍在調查中，肇事責任也將由車輛行車事故鑑定委員會釐清。

朱男的另一女兒與家人經警方通知趕到醫院、殯儀館時悲痛不已，怎麼也沒想到家人這趟桃園訪友之行，竟然讓她和摯愛的母親、手足就此天人永隔，而父親還在醫院的加護病房與死神搏鬥。

至於大貨車駕駛羅男事發後神情低落，拒絕送醫，其同車乘客二人，包括四十五歲菲律賓籍男子（雙腳擦傷疼痛）、卅五歲越南籍男子（無明顯外傷），二人經送醫治療均無大礙。

地方里民得知死亡車禍，直說該路口開通後死傷車禍頻傳，還有衝進田裡、撞到鐵皮屋的，期盼公部門能改善該路口的相關交通標誌和號誌設置；警方則呼籲，車輛行經路口時應確實減速慢行，遵守號誌指示，轉彎車應禮讓直行車，並隨時注意周邊人車動態，切勿搶快或心存僥倖，以確保自身及其他用路人安全。

從蜜餞賣到面膜宜蘭金柑轉型拚經濟／農業部輔導結合科技開發加工品為農村注入新生命

金柑有著「呷金柑年年好」的吉祥寓意，外形渾圓飽滿、色澤澄黃，是連皮可食的柑橘類水果，宜蘭產量占全台九成，素有「金柑故鄉」美名，近年在農業部輔導下，從傳統鮮果發展為「六級化產業」，不僅蜜餞聞名，搭配科技研發的面膜、益生菌也驚豔市場，提升附加價值，也獲得副總統蕭美琴肯定，成為台灣農業轉型典範。

「六級化產業」是指將農業生產（一級）、加工（二級）與行銷服務（三級），三者相加結合，以提升農產品附加價值，並將利潤留存在農村的創新模式，可提高農業收入、創造農村就業及活化地區經濟，是農村轉型升級的關鍵策略。

全台金柑栽培面積約二一五公頃，產地集中宜蘭員山與礁溪鄉，產季為每年十一月至次年二月，也常作為年節吉祥盆栽。農糧署自二〇二〇年起籌組「金柑產業策略聯盟」，串聯農民、加工業者及休閒農業，輔導產業發展，更發表「蘭陽金柑輕旅小食光地圖」，導引民眾深入產地，帶動在地消費。

宜蘭縣政府也連辦廿一屆「蘭陽黃金柑品質評鑑競賽」，並推動「金柑好神」品牌，成功優化產品形象，除傳統蜜餞，更有金柑果酒、醬油、氣泡飲、餐食，甚至跨足美妝產業，開發出面膜。

副總統蕭美琴去年底到礁溪金柑園體驗採果，對宜蘭金柑產業轉型印象深刻。她讚許果農不僅守住鮮果產量，更結合科技開發各種農產加工品，如蜜餞果乾、面膜等，並與生態教育、觀光遊程串連，有效帶動地方經濟發展，為農村注入新生命。

致力「農業零殘留」的礁溪金柑農許錫淇說自己著重自然與食安，期盼種植出純淨金柑，透過生物科技萃取出精油與抗氧化物後製成親膚化妝品，另也藉由發酵分解做成益生菌，展現農產品的無限潛能。

農友推動友善耕作吃得安心

宜蘭首位通過金柑有機驗證的農友林庭財，則與廿多位理念相同夥伴組成「蘭陽金柑生產合作社」，推動友善耕作。他強調，即使產量減半也要堅持下去，無論是鮮食或加工成無添加果乾，才能讓消費者「吃得安心」。

柯志恩個性爽朗、口才辨給，在綠營基本盤較大的高雄逐漸打出知名度，近期幾份民調與對手賴瑞隆差距僅個位數，凸顯其努力獲一定認同；藍營也持續透過各種管道強化行銷力度，希望再拉近、甚至能出現與對手的黃金交叉。

民進黨賴瑞隆在市長初選中險勝，接著面對議員黨內初選，預計初選結束後進一步整合團隊，除要弭平市長初選期間的情緒，還要謹慎處理議員初選後的各種怨懟。

賴瑞隆歷練完整、行事風格穩重，是高雄市民進黨最年輕的市長參選人。賴有一份高雄人熟悉的親切感，尤其在擔任幕僚、政務官期間養成的協調溝通能力，成為他帶動組織的優勢，組織戰力也是民進黨在高雄選舉的關鍵。

這回民進黨初選期程提前，給了賴瑞隆更多時間處理內戰衍生的傷痕，他也選擇緊跟市長陳其邁學習、請益，藉由「邁邁」在高雄的共主之姿，間接拉近與各派系的距離，同時也給外界傳承的觀感。

外界認為，民進黨初選後的團結戰力、加上陳其邁的政績與個人魅力，很有機會將藍綠逐漸縮小的差距繼續拉大。

史詩怒火行動首日摧毀約五百個目標

德黑蘭迅速啟動在中東的代理人網絡，並由革命衛隊主導對周邊設有美軍基地的國家，發動飛彈和無人機報復。美國總統川普警告，若伊朗持續報復，美國將以「前所未有」的毀滅性力量回擊。

根據國際媒體先前報導顯示，伊朗的防空系統主要由俄羅斯、中國進口裝備及本土研發系統混合組成。

三核心瓶頸多層次防空體系失靈

伊朗最倚重的長程防禦武力為俄製S-300PMU-2，曾被視為攔截隱身戰機的王牌。然而，在此次空襲初期，多套S-300的雷達與指揮車便遭到以色列精準摧毀。此外，用於保護核設施的短程Tor SAM亦未能有效攔截低空滲透的特種無人機。

為填補損失，伊朗近期緊急引進中國製紅旗-9B （HQ-9B）長程防空系統，並大量採用中方提供的雷達指管系統。儘管數據帳面優異，但在實戰中與現有體系的數據鏈整合仍存在落差。

至於伊朗自主開發的Bavar-373 及具備一千一百公里偵測範圍的 Gadir（加迪爾）長程雷達，雖具備一定的偵測能力，但在面對電子戰干擾時表現並不穩定。

伊朗防空網之所以在去年六月至今年初的多次軍事衝突中「失靈」，主因在於三大核心瓶頸，包括「斷頭式」雷達精準打擊、系統碎片化與兼容性漏洞、以色列情報機構摩薩德的內部滲透。

其中，伊朗防空體系由俄、中、伊三方裝備強行拼接而成。外電報導分析顯示，各系統間數據交換遲滯，導致防禦盲區增加，給了F-35匿蹤戰機穿透防線的可乘之機。

「鄭麗文背後是不是有強大力量驅使，讓她不惜無視黨內及地方的真實意見？」黨務人士質疑，在美國攻打伊朗之際，舉辦「鄭習會」對台灣真的好嗎？近來傳出中國針對台灣地方選舉成立工作專組，鄭麗文此刻執意赴中，會不會接收特定指令，也讓國內高度憂心。黨務人士強調，「亡國感」是國民黨一直掛在嘴邊，民進黨從不求戰、引戰，在當前印太局勢下，各國都在提升自我防衛能力，台灣強化國防正是向國際展現意志。

一名輔選幕僚受訪分析，「維持現狀」仍是台灣社會的最大公約數，過度激進的立場只會招致反感。鄭麗文自參選國民黨主席以來即走偏鋒，令人聯想到二〇二四年總統大選前，馬英九一句「相信習近平」讓藍營兵敗如山倒，如今鄭顯然正走在同樣的路線上。

該幕僚認為，「抗中保台」是台灣社會的基本認知，未必時時掛在嘴邊，但當中國不斷挑釁台灣的底線、藍白陣營一再唱和促統言論時，大眾的不滿與警覺就會被激發，是藍白囂張的態度讓這張牌產生了效果，鄭麗文若還將此視為「利多」，恐怕是對民意的嚴重誤判。

不過，輔選幕僚也示警，中國對台介選在地方選舉的效果往往更加顯著，相較於全國性大選的議題集中，中國在地方選舉會利用大量資源在各縣市「放火」，煽動細碎的耳語及爭議，這種「天女散花」式的攻擊易於渲染擴散，更需要民眾高度警惕。

礁溪鄉農會理事長李淑芬說，為讓金柑永續發展，農會努力朝創新與多角化經營，並結合在地溫泉與文化特色，除種植「黃水晶」、「寧波」、「長壽」等品種，也鼓勵農友投入智慧農業，以應對傳統金柑栽培勞力密集與鳥害問題。

詐團車手蘇男騙走新竹縣鄭男廿萬元，沒有拿到酬勞，被新竹檢方起訴求刑一年半，新竹地院法官審理後認為「我國詐騙集團橫行，司法判決對於詐欺犯罪量刑過輕，長期為人詬病」，不僅「加倍」重判三年二月，甚至「附贈」合併宣告騙來的廿萬元作為罰金刑，是近來少見對詐騙犯重懲的判決。

檢方起訴指控，詐欺車手蘇男於二〇二三年十月，在新竹縣便利商店騙鄭男面交廿萬元，蘇男沒拿到酬勞，但其助長詐欺犯罪猖獗，危害社會信賴關係及金融交易秩序，且對被害人經濟、心理及精神造成重大影響，具體求刑一年六月。

法官：詐欺量刑過輕長期為人詬病

新竹地院法官審理後認為，蘇男迄今並未賠償被害人，犯罪所生危害尚未填補，且有組織犯罪、加重詐欺取財及洗錢案件等前科紀錄，我國詐騙集團橫行，司法判決對於詐欺犯罪量刑過輕，長期為人所詬病，從事詐欺犯罪成本低廉，使企圖不勞而獲之徒前仆後繼投入，造成我國人民巨大財產上損失，警政司法機關疲於奔命，將排擠我國在詐欺案件以外的其他犯罪偵查與人民權益保障，影響層面重大。

法官審酌認為，儘管蘇男未取得約定報酬，沒有沒收犯罪所得的問題，仍決定對他合併宣告向被害人所收取的廿萬元詐欺贓款相同數額，作為罰金刑，以示政府打詐決心。最後法官將蘇男依三人以上共同詐欺取財罪重判有期徒刑三年二月，併科罰金廿萬元。

Taiwan has received more than US$70 million in royalties as of the end of last year from developing the F-16V jet as countries worldwide purchase or upgrade to this popular model, government and military officials said on Saturday.

Taiwan funded the development of the F-16V jet and ended up the sole investor as other countries withdrew from the program.

Now the F-16V is increasingly popular and countries must pay Taiwan a percentage in royalties when they purchase new F-16V aircraft or upgrade older F-16 models.

The next five years are expected to be the peak for these royalties, with Taiwan potentially earning hundreds of millions of US dollars, officials said.

While the international community was largely focused on developing fifth-generation fighter jets, Taiwan’s decision to continue developing the 4.5-generation F-16V jet despite international doubts has paid off, they said.

About 5,000 F-16 aircraft of all models have been produced since they entered service in the late 1970s, and about 3,000 are still in service across about 30 countries.

The aircraft, produced by US defense company Lockheed Martin, is the most popular fourth- generation and 4.5-generation aircraft worldwide.

The F-16V upgrades the F-16’s performance with its AN/APG-83 AESA radar, advanced avionics and automatic ground collision avoidance systems.

Taiwan led development of the radar and advanced avionics system.

The US and Egypt participated at first but later withdrew, leaving Taiwan as the sole investor.

The contract stipulates that when other countries purchase F-16V aircraft or upgrade older F-16 aircraft to the V version, they must pay Taiwan royalties.

Since fifth-generation fighter jets produced in the US are expensive, many countries are purchasing or upgrading to F-16V aircraft, which have the same radar as fifth-generation jets such as the F-35.

Taiwan received its first royalty payment for F-16V aircraft in 2019.

Former US Department of Defense official Tony Hu （胡振東） previously said that Taiwan earned about NT$60 million in F-16V royalties during his tenure.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a major attack on Iran launched by Israel and the US, throwing the future of the Islamic republic into doubt and raising the risk of regional instability.

Iranian state television and the state-run IRNA news agency announced the 86-year-old’s death early yesterday. US President Donald Trump said it gave Iranians their “greatest chance” to “take back” their country.

The announcements came after a joint US and Israeli aerial bombardment that targeted Iranian military and governmental sites. Trump said the “heavy and pinpoint bombing” would continue through the week or as long as necessary.

Iran responded by firing drones and missiles at Israel and US military installations around the Gulf, and also at the global business hub of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Earlier yesterday, Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard threatened to launch its “most-intense offensive operation” ever targeting Israel and US bases.

Israel also continued its attacks on Iran with an enormous strike that targeted Tehran.

Iranians took to the streets cheering with joy, setting off fireworks and playing celebratory music after reports of Khamenei’s death, according to witnesses and video footage verified by Agence France-Presse.

The celebrations in Tehran began shortly after 11pm on Saturday, even before Iranian state television had confirmed Trump’s statement that Khamenei was dead, according to multiple witnesses and audio recordings.

However, people were not coming out en masse to celebrate, according to social media.

Meanwhile, the thousands who did gather in the center of Iran’s capital yesterday were instead mourning Khamenei’s death. They dressed mostly in black and some, crying, chanted: “death to America” and “death to Israel” in Enghelab Square, with many waving Iranian flags and holding photos of Khamenei.

Iranian state television announced a 40-day mourning period and seven public holidays.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian branded Khamenei’s killing a “declaration of war against Muslims” by Israel and the US.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran considers it its legitimate duty and right to avenge the perpetrators and masterminds of this historic crime,” Pezeshkian said in a statement carried by state TV.

The Israeli military yesterday said that its strikes had killed 40 top Iranian military officials, including Chief of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Abdolrahim Mousavi.

Israel did not provide evidence, and neither Iran nor the US immediately commented on the claim.

The Israeli military also said it had “dismantled the majority of the aerial defense systems in western and central Iran” and was “paving the way toward establishing aerial superiority over the skies of Tehran.”

A nearly total Internet blackout continued in Iran yesterday morning, a monitoring group said.

NetBlocks said connectivity has flatlined at 1 percent of its ordinary levels.

Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain have all reported intercepting incoming attacks.

The Qatari Ministry of Defense said the country’s air force and air defense units intercepted missiles and drones fired from Iran, and that there were no casualties.

The Bahrain News Agency, citing the Bahraini National Communication Center, said the country intercepted a wave of missiles and drones launched by Iran.

It said “limited” debris landed in a number of areas, without providing further details.

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Defense said the military’s air defenses repelled “a number of hostile aerial targets,” but did not mention any human or material losses.

The Abu Dhabi Media Office said shrapnel from a drone that was intercepted by air defense units fell at a tower in Abu Dhabi, lightly wounding a woman and her child.

The office said that the sounds heard yesterday in the city were those of successful interceptions.

Oman said an oil tanker in the strategic Strait of Hormuz came under attack, wounding four mariners on board.

The attack targeted a Palau-flagged vessel called Skylight, the state-run Oman News Agency said.

It described the crew as Indian and Iranian.

It was not clear who attacked the vessel, but it came as authorities have said Iran has been threatening ships traveling the strait via radio since the US and Israel launched their attack.

A massive explosion struck Iran’s capital yesterday as the Israeli military said it was targeting the “heart” of the city.

The blast sent a huge plume of smoke into the sky and shook the ground.

It was not immediately clear what the target was. The blast appeared centered in a neighborhood home to the country’s police headquarters and Iranian state television.

The Israeli military said it was striking targets in central Tehran.

It said that on the first day of the war the military cleared the path to Tehran and on the second day it was striking central Tehran.

The Israeli military said it has identified another round of missiles headed toward Israel from Iran.

Early yesterday, there were repeated barrages of missile fire across Israel, including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

According to Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue services, one person was killed and 121 were injured in the first 24 hours of the conflict.

Some airports across the Middle East remained closed yesterday.

Emirates Airlines has suspended all flights to and from Dubai.

The Qatar airport was closed until at least this morning, Qatar Airways said.

Israeli airspace also remains closed.

The closures have stranded tens of thousands of travelers around the world.

Airport authorities in Indonesia’s island of Bali said more than 1,600 tourists were stranded at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport yesterday after several flights to the Middle East were canceled or postponed due to airspace closures in a number of countries.

Five flights to Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha operated by Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways were affected, involving 1,631 passengers, Indonesian state owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia said.

The airport said overall operations remained normal and passengers were being handled under airline policies while authorities coordinated with airlines and air navigation officials.

The US embassy in Jordan urged Americans in the kingdom to remain indoors as Iran continued its attacks across the Gulf Arab states and Israel.

The embassy made the warning yesterday morning in a post on X, citing reports of “missiles, drones, or rockets are in Jordanian airspace.”

The Qatari Ministry of the Interior said eight people were wounded early yesterday in Iranian attacks on the country, raising the total number of those wounded since strikes began the day before to 16.

The ministry said attacks also caused “limited” material damages.

It urged people in Qatar to stay home and only go out in case of emergency and keep roads open for ambulances.

Ebrahim Taheri, a Minab prosecutor, told the Iranian judiciary’s Mizan News Agency that the death toll from Saturday’s US and Israeli strike on a girls’ school in southern Iran’s Minab county has risen to 148 killed and 95 wounded.

Trump yesterday warned Iran not to escalate its attacks, writing online that US forces would strike back with exceptional force.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs （MOFA） yesterday rebuked a statement by China’s embassy in Israel that it would evacuate Taiwanese holders of Chinese travel documents from Israel amid the latter’s escalating conflict with Iran.

Tensions have risen across the Middle East in the wake of US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran beginning Saturday.

China subsequently issued an evacuation notice for its citizens. In a news release, the Chinese embassy in Israel said holders of “Taiwan compatriot permits （台胞證）” issued to Taiwanese nationals by Chinese authorities for travel to China — could register for evacuation to Egypt.

In Taipei, the ministry yesterday said Taiwan has already activated its own mechanisms and does not require Beijing to “meddle.”

“MOFA and its overseas missions are committed to providing timely and necessary assistance to ensure the safety of Republic of China nationals,” ministry spokesman Hsiao Kuang-wei （蕭光偉） said, adding that Taiwan’s consular protection rights must not be reduced to a tool for political manipulation.

According to the ministry, the approximately 3,000 Taiwanese nationals currently in the Middle East with whom it has established contact are safe.

Of those Taiwanese, 2,000 are in Saudi Arabia, 300 in the United Arab Emirates, 262 in Israel, 200 in Qatar, 124 in Jordan, 50 in Kuwait, 23 in Oman, 22 in Bahrain and four in Iran.

The ministry said it would continue to monitor the latest situation in the region and maintain close contact with other countries to make timely adjustments to its response measures.

In case of an emergency in the Middle East, the ministry urged Taiwanese to call the nearest Taiwanese representative office for assistance or ask their families in Taiwan to contact the ministry’s all-hours toll-free emergency hotline at +886-800-085-095.

The Tourism Bureau added yesterday that an estimated 773 Taiwanese travelers from 28 tour groups have been affected due to airspace closures in the region.

The bureau said it has asked local travel agencies to come up with alternative flight routes to ensure traffic safety and to make sure the planned group visits would not be affected.

Separately yesterday, an official said on condition of anonymity that China’s evacuation notice’s reference to “Taiwanese compatriots” is simply another instance of Beijing “taking advantage of Taiwan.”

“Taiwan has a representative office in Israel and does not need the Chinese Communist Party to overstep its role,” they said.

Taiwan maintains cordial and substantive ties with Israel, while Iran has cultivated close relations with the People’s Republic of China, the official said.

Venezuela was previously characterized by Beijing as an “all-weather strategic partner” and a critical node in the Western hemisphere, while Iran is regarded as the heart of China’s Belt and Road Initiative in the Middle East and one of its most important strategic partners.

Iran was also listed alongside Russia and North Korea as a “VVIP” during China’s Sept. 3 military parade. Beijing’s close relationship with the theocratic regime led by supreme leader Ali Khamenei is widely recognized, the official said.

If Taiwanese were to align themselves with China at this juncture — identifying as Chinese nationals or as allies of Iran — it could create the perception that Taiwan is positioning itself against democratic countries, potentially complicating future international travel, the official warned.

China’s strong backing of Iran’s theocratic regime has coincided with crackdowns on pro-democracy Iranians, resulting in arrests and killings.

With public sentiment in Iran toward China increasingly negative, being identified locally as “Chinese” could expose Taiwanese to heightened risk, the official said.

There is no mistake in Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s remarks regarding a “Taiwan contingency,” former Japanese minister of economy, trade and industry Akira Amari said in an recent interview with the Chinese-language Liberty Times （the Taipei Times’ sister paper）.

Amari was referring to a statement by Takaichi during a parliamentary session in November last year when she said China using armed force against Taiwan could constitute a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan, allowing the country to mobilize the Japanese armed forces under its security laws.

Amari said that on the Taiwan issue, the position of the Liberal Democratic Party administration has not changed and would not change.

However, if statements are made carelessly, they could instead cause difficulties for Taiwan or subject it to unnecessary tensions, he said, adding that it would be important to maintain a measured and appropriate tone in communication.

Amari added: “But I believe there is nothing wrong with Takaichi’s statement.”

The Taiwan-Japan relationship is one of the finest bilateral partnerships in the world and it is essential for Japan and Taiwan to work together to lead the world in maintaining global stability in the future, he said.

“Of course, staying at the global forefront means we cannot afford to relax for a single second in technology and research and development,” he said, “I remain convinced that it is vital for Japan and Taiwan to jointly uphold our leadership in the semiconductor field.”

Before Japan’s snap election last month, in which Takaichi led her party to a sweeping victory,

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co （TSMC） chairman CC Wei （魏哲家） met with Takaichi in Japan and announced plans to make advanced 3-nanometer chips in Japan.

Amari said the future would be driven by semiconductors, as everything is powered by them, so if the world is divided into “those who can manufacture the most advanced chips” and “those who can only depend on supply by others,” Japan must stand on the same front as Taiwan and South Korea.

“For Japan, this is an industrial policy concerning national survival,” he added.

“Japan must be among those who supply semiconductors,” Amari said, adding that it is a long-held conviction of his that Japan must secure its position as a supplier at any cost or its survival would be threatened.

“This is precisely why the Taiwan-

Japan partnership is so vital,” he said.

Leading Japan’s semiconductor policy with a focus on economic security strategy, Amari worked with TSMC as they stood up a subsidiary corporation in Japan. His contributions to the Taiwan-Japan industrial partnership were recognized by President William Lai （賴清德） last year who awarded Amari with the Professional Medal of the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

“Those who control semiconductors, control the world, “ Amari said.

Amari said Japan has the capacity to manufacture sensors, memory and power semiconductors, but lacks the ability to produce high-end logic semiconductors, a “missing piece of the puzzle” in Japan’s domestic production.

In Japan’s pursuit of a semiconductor revival, close-range access to world-class technology is essential, he said, adding that bringing the world’s foremost foundry to Japan provides stimulus and inspiration for Japan’s domestic industry.

The concentration of

semiconductor manufacturing in Taiwan poses a global risk, because China has designs on Taiwan and any scenario where China gains control over Taiwan and TSMC would result in a total supply chain paralysis, he said.

“Establishing TSMC production sites outside of Taiwan can help deter Chinese aggression, while enhancing the stability of the global supply chain,” he said.

Regarding semiconductors, very few nations are capable of high-end manufacturing — essentially only Taiwan, Japan, the Netherlands and South Korea. If these countries fail to collaborate in leading technological development, the US might struggle to sustain the industry alone, Amari said.

The collaboration between Taiwan and Japan is deeply meaningful, as it not only provides stimulus for Japan’s industrial development but also contributes to the stability of global supply chains in the democratic world, he said.

State-run CPC Corp, Taiwan （CPC, 台灣中油） yesterday said that it had confirmed on Saturday night with its liquefied natural gas （LNG） and crude oil suppliers that shipments are proceeding as scheduled and that domestic supplies remain unaffected.

CPC said it has been reducing the proportion of crude oil imports from the Middle East and diversifying its supply sources in the past few years in response to geopolitical risks, expanding purchases from the Americas, Europe, Africa and Australia.

Last year, crude oil from the Middle East accounted for 34.9 percent of Taiwan’s total imports, down from 45 percent in 2022, while imports from the US rose to 61.8 percent from 44 percent during the same period, CPC said.

The company added that about 30 percent of its LNG purchases in 2024 and last year came from Qatar, another 30 percent from Australia and about 10 percent from the US.

CPC said it aims to gradually reduce LNG imports from Gulf countries and increase those from the US, with US imports expected to account for about 25 percent of the total by 2029.

The state-owned company said it would continue to monitor developments in the Middle East and work with the government to help stabilize commodity prices.

Meanwhile, global brent crude jumped 10 percent to about US$80 a barrel over the counter yesterday, oil traders said, while analysts predicted that prices could climb as high as US$100 after US and Israeli strikes on Iran plunged the Middle East into a new war.

“While the military attacks are themselves supportive for oil prices, the key factor here is the closing of the Strait of Hormuz,” said Ajay Parmar, director of energy and refining at ICIS.

Most tanker owners, oil majors and trading houses have suspended crude oil, fuel and liquefied natural gas shipments via the Strait of Hormuz, trade sources said, after Tehran warned ships against moving through the waterway.

More than 20 percent of global oil is moved through the Strait of Hormuz.

“We expect prices to open [from today] much closer to US$100 a barrel and perhaps exceed that level if we see a prolonged outage of the Strait,” Parmar said.

Middle East leaders have told Washington that a war on Iran could lead to oil prices jumping to more than US$100 a barrel, said RBC analyst Helima Croft.

Barclays analysts also said prices could hit US$100.

The OPEC+ group of oil producers yesterday agreed to raise output by 206,000 barrels per day （bpd） from next month, a modest increase representing less than 0.2 percent of global demand.

While some alternate infrastructure could be used to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, the net impact from its closure would be a loss of 8 million to 10 million bpd of crude oil supply even after diverting some flows through Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline and Abu Dhabi pipeline, said Rystad energy economist Jorge Leon.

〔記者鄭琪芳／台北報導〕財政部南區國稅局表示，民眾購買保險後變更保單要保人，形同原要保人將保單價值無償移轉予他人，應依規定辦理贈與稅申報；如果原要保人在變更要保人後2年內死亡，該保單價值將視為遺產，繼承人須將保單以繼承日的價值準備金，併入原要保人遺產總額申報課稅。

南區國稅局說明，根據「保險法」規定，要保人為申請訂立保險契約及依約交付保險費之人，享有隨時終止契約及取得解約金或保單價值準備金的權利。因此，一旦保單原要保人變更為他人時，附隨於要保人保險契約的權益，將隨同移轉而成立贈與行為，原要保人應依「遺贈稅法」規定申報贈與稅。

另外，如果原要保人於變更保單要保人後2年內不幸死亡，如果變更後的要保人為原要保人的配偶、依「民法」規定的各順序繼承人（如子女、孫子女、兄弟姐妹）及其配偶，則該保單屬死亡前2年內贈與的財產，應依「遺贈稅法」第15條規定，以繼承日的保單價值準備金併入遺產總額課徵遺產稅。

舉例說明，甲君於兒子出生時購買數張以本人為要保人、兒子為被保險人的人壽保險契約，甲君於2024年6月將保單要保人變更為配偶乙君，截至變更日的保單價值準備金1000萬元，因該等保單要保人之變更，屬配偶相互贈與不計入贈與總額。不過，甲君不幸於2025年11月過世，該保單贈與在甲君死亡前2年內，應依「遺贈稅法」第15條規定，以死亡時的時價，也就是繼承日的保單價值準備金1100萬元，計入甲君的遺產總額報繳遺產稅。

南區國稅局提醒，保險契約變更要保人，應留意「遺贈稅法」相關規定，原要保人若未依規定申報贈與稅或涉有死亡前2年內贈與應併入遺產課稅者，在未經檢舉、未經稽徵機關進行調查前自動補申報，可依「稅捐稽徵法」第48條之1規定，加計利息免予處罰。

不過其實早在西洋情人節（2月14日）當天，《陽光女子合唱團》就已經超車魏德聖執導的《海角七號》登上台灣影史台片冠軍，但仍有不少人以為，《海角七號》當年全台票房有「7億」，甚至有網友直接提問「《海角七號》票房不是有7億嗎？」、「那『海角7億』是哪裡來的？」

事實上，《海角七號》2008年上映，最終票房為5億3435萬，就此稱霸影史冠軍近18年，而大家記憶中的「海角7億」（或寫作「海角七億」）則指前總統陳水扁家庭在2008年被揭發的洗錢案，就這麼巧，兩件事情發生在同一年，因此被與當時紅極一時的電影《海角七號》票房名詞混淆，但「海角7億」純粹是指政治洗錢案件。

沒想到《海角七號》的票房「海角7億」就這樣變成一個「曼德拉效應」（指集體記憶與史實不符的社會心理現象，即眾多人對歷史事件、流行文化細節有著錯誤但一致的「共同記憶」），但其實該片票房如前面提到的為5.34億元，因此《陽光女子合唱團》才是影史唯一一部全台破7億的台灣電影！

最近電影《世紀血案》宣傳時，有演員稱事件「可能沒那麼嚴重」。問題不在失言，而在判定標準錯置。歷史事件之嚴重性，應依國家暴力規模、受害人數、違法程度及制度後果綜合評價，而非憑主觀感受。當國家暴力被降格為「感受差異」，責任主體隨之稀釋，制度責任也因此模糊，而史料與調查結論則被忽視。

這種對史實的輕忽，不是單一現象，而是與制度層面的鬆動相互呼應。國民黨在立法院強行修正《政黨及其附隨組織不當取得財產處理條例》，倘若已程序認定的不義取得，再被包裝為「政治清算」，本質上是否定法治程序的既判效力。這不只是歷史觀之爭，更動搖法律確定性。當國家對威權遺緒的法律評價反覆，社會記憶震盪，竄改史實成本亦隨之下降。

所幸檔案會說話。國安局移交五萬餘件1992年前政治檔案，解密率逾9成6，數位化兩百餘萬頁供全民查閱。以林義雄宅血案為例，多數檔案已依法解密，其餘基於隱私分批開放。依法揭露、兼顧權利保障，是歷史判定的正當程序。檔案愈完整，責任愈清晰；證據愈透明，竄改愈困難。

轉型正義不是情緒宣洩，而是制度工程；不是政治報復，而是責任確認。二二八若僅止於追思，未轉化為教育、法治與制度實踐，民主將流於形式。認識二二八史實，是防止竄改的最後一道防線；制度化解密，是確立責任的核心機制；持續監督，則是守護成果的必要條件。

歷史不能被簡化或扭曲。否則民主將在一次次儀式性紀念中慢慢失血，而真正被改寫的，不只是歷史，而是我們賴以立足的法治基礎。

〔記者龔乃玠／台北報導〕經典賽台灣隊宋晟睿搭上末班車，遞補30人名單飛到日本宮崎備戰，他接受中信兄弟官方YouTube頻道訪問時坦言，這是從進職業以來的夢想，但也不太希望是因為有人受傷才用這種方式入選，「我一定會在熱身賽期間準備好自己。」

宋晟睿起初沒有入選30人名單，他坦言得知當下心情有點低落、難過，「但還是會告訴自己說，還有自己的賽季需要去努力，當然會很在乎說這次沒有入選，但還是覺得說要準備好自己的心情去迎接新的賽季。」

中東局勢再度陷入動盪。懸掛帛琉國旗的油輪「天光號」（Skylight）週日（1日）在戰略要地荷姆茲海峽附近的阿曼穆桑達姆半島海域遭到攻擊。《路透》報導更稱，當天已有3艘油輪先後在此地帶遇襲，這是自伊朗遭到美以聯合突襲後，對波斯灣國家發動一系列報復性空襲以來，阿曼境內或附近地區首次發生襲擊事件。

波灣國家受牽連 1日3油輪被攻擊

根據阿曼海事安全中心報告，攻擊地點位於哈薩布港以北約5海里處，事件造成4名船員受傷，因火勢凶猛，船上20名船員（包含15名印度籍及5名伊朗籍）已全數緊急撤離。阿曼方面尚未說明攻擊的具體手段與起因。

「天光號」（Skylight）油輪身分特殊，其管理公司Red Sea Ship Management被指控為涉嫌協助運輸伊朗石油產品的「影子船隊」，於2025年12月遭美國財政部制裁。根據航運監測服務「Tankertrackers.com」指出，該船為小型油輪，主要用於海上加油，自2月22日起便停靠於該區域。

《路透》報導另指出，一艘懸掛馬紹爾群島國旗的油輪「MKD VYOM」，在阿曼首都馬斯喀特西北部約44.4海里處（約82.2公里）遭到「砲彈」攻擊。英國海事貿易行動辦公室（UKMTO）也證實，有一艘油輪在馬斯喀特西北方約50海里處被攻擊，輪機室起火。馬斯喀特西北方就是荷姆茲海峽。

在當地傍晚時分，UKMTO又發布有一艘油輪在阿拉伯聯合大公國薩克爾港（Mina Saqr）西北約17海里處（約31.48公里）遭到不明飛行物襲擊，一度造成船上起火，但在火勢撲滅後，該船打算繼續航行。

無人機襲港區域緊張連環爆

此次襲擊並非孤例。在同一天早些時候，阿曼杜庫姆（Duqm）商業港也遭到兩架無人機襲擊，導致一名外籍勞工受傷。

伊朗伊斯蘭革命衛隊於2月28日晚間宣布，禁止任何船隻通過荷姆茲海峽，目前除了有百餘艘載著原油與液化天然氣（LNG）的船隻在海峽內的沙烏地、卡達與伊拉克沿岸停泊，另有數百艘油輪及貨船停靠在海峽外的阿聯、阿曼沿岸觀望。分析指出，由於全球約五分之一的石油需經由荷姆茲海峽運輸，此次封鎖聲明與針對性襲擊，反映出美、以、伊衝突升溫後，波斯灣周邊緊張局勢已升級至臨界點。

彰化縣一名陳姓董娘2年前被詐團鎖定，花500萬元到銀樓買68.332兩黃金交給詐團收水手，但銀樓收據誤寫成683.32兩，當時每台兩黃金約7萬2400元，警方、檢方都未注意500萬元絕對買不到683.32兩黃金，起訴書卻寫「被告詐得黃金683.32兩」，該案進入法院審理時，黃金已飆到每台兩15萬6600元，被告扛下的黃金債已飆到1億703萬餘元。

董娘面對此判決結果，不知該哭還是該笑！因為黃金能不能拿回來都有變數。一名法界人士說，近兩年黃金飆漲，若只標示黃金重量，對被害者十分有利，被告在定讞後仍拿不出來黃金，政府就要查扣其房產或其他有價證券。

該案判決書指出，陳女接獲詐團電話，佯稱其觸犯詐欺、取財罪將被法辦，若交出「保證金」將可暫緩執行，陳女信以為真，先後交給陳姓兄弟檔車手140萬元和68.332兩的黃金，陳姓兄弟再將黃金和現金交給吳姓收水手。

詐團慫恿董娘用黃金代替現金，她從銀行領出500萬元現金，到員林莒光路某銀樓買68.332兩黃金交給車手，結果銀樓竟把收據寫成「683.32兩」。後來吳男和陳姓兄弟落網，警方將這張銀樓收據隨被告移送，檢方也根據此收據起訴，警方、檢方、法官、吳男都未注意到「500萬元僅能買到68.332兩黃金」，而吳男出庭時也未表示意見，此錯誤一直到吳男判決才被發現。

法官表示，被告吳男入監前為板模工，每日收入2、3千元，考量其犯後態度及檢察官具體求刑4年6月，判處吳男3年6月徒刑，「沒收未扣案之140萬現金和683.32兩的黃金，若不能沒收或不宜執行，則追徵其價額」。

彰化地院指出，審理庭「683.32兩」的認定係依被害人證述，「領500萬去銀樓買683.32兩黃金」及被告承認有收取該數量黃金的自白而為判決。價格不合理之處，合議庭會再討論確認，若有必要，將循法定程序處理。院方則強調，500萬元買黃金是檢、辯雙方的共識。

杜拜目前是中東旅遊與貿易樞紐，曾參演三立電視《鳥來伯與十三姨》的女星藝鴒，1日發文透露自己原定經杜拜轉機，竟在出發前一刻被迫取消，她無奈說：「收起行李，也收起期待。」

去年中市交通事故30日死亡人數北屯、大里死亡數前二名

根據交通局去年1至10月統計，因交通事故30日死亡人數台中市去年雖較前年有減少，但是有些行政區的死亡人數有增加，去年死亡人數最多的行政區為北屯區20人、其次是大里16人，西屯、龍井同樣都是14人，但是增加最多是大里區，跟前年比增加達11人，其次是龍井增加6人，而豐原及潭子則是減少最多。

此外，交通部更統計，去年不管是A1及A2，主要的肇事車種以機車最多，而A1事故每10萬人口死亡率最高是高齡族群，因此台中市政府在今年的交通安全策進作為，要將機車族與高齡者為防制核心；交通局長葉昭甫表示，今年有編列450萬持續推動機車族駕訓補助。

根據交通局去年1至10月統計，因交通事故30日死亡人數台中市去年雖較前年有減少，由240人減少至233人，但是有些行政區的死亡人數有增加，最多是大里區有16人死亡比前年增加11人，其次是龍井14人增加6人、沙鹿11人增加5人。

此外，根據交通部統計，台中市的A1類交通事故白天在清晨6點至8點有22件，晚上6點到8點有18件，因此清晨6點到上午8點是事故發生率最高，交通局長葉昭甫呼籲若民眾清晨出門運動，最好穿亮一點顏色的衣服。

此外，發生A1類事故的主要肇事車種以機車最多，去年達66件，佔48.2%，小客車33件佔24.1%次之，小貨車16件，11.7%占第三，而主要肇事的年齡層在18至24歲，而每10萬人死亡人數以65歲以上年齡最多。

高市黃姓警員被中獎話術受騙，提供郵局帳戶給詐欺集團歛財，雖獲檢方處分不起訴，但被分局書面告誡，他不服打官司翻案，被高雄高等行政法院判決駁回。

據了解，警方偵辦詐欺集團行騙案，發現張姓等4名被害人，於2024年11月6日間，共匯入10多萬元到黃男郵局戶頭，依涉嫌違反洗錢防治法，將他函送高雄地檢署後，承辦檢察官認定罪證不足，予以不起訴落幕。

不過，黃男服務的分局則認為他沒有正當理由提供帳戶，予以書面告誡處分，他不服提起行政訴訟，指被中獎10萬元的話術蒙蔽，本身也匯款近5千元到指定帳戶被騙，要求還他清白。

高雄高等行政法院開庭調查，黃男雖無刑事責任，但僅憑網路上素不相識、僅互動數日，甚至根本無從經確認對方品行、生活細節而產生信賴，便依對話或通話指示提供帳戶，認定有過失，警方懲處依法有據，可上訴。

酒駕害人害己！高雄市1名王姓男子酒後騎車行經青年路二段，擦撞路旁1部停放機車後，王男機車竟呈現倒立狀，王男全身多處擦挫傷，臉部受傷破相要縫合，酒測值超標每公升0.29毫克，警方先將他送醫救治，後續將依公共危險罪嫌偵辦。

鳳山警分局忠孝所今天凌晨2時許獲報在鳳山區青年路二段50號附近發生交通事故，警方到場了解為王姓男子（37歲）騎乘普重機車沿青年路二段外側車道南往北方向直行時，擦撞停放停車格內1輛機車。

綜合外媒報導，伊朗伊斯蘭革命衛隊（IRGC）1日發布聲明，聲稱目前在波斯灣海域的美軍林肯號已遭4枚彈道飛彈擊中。IRGC還說，針對「美、以敵對目標」的打擊已進入「新階段」。

〔健康頻道／綜合報導〕不少茹素者想攝取好油，大吞亞麻仁籽，西園醫院蔬食醫師邱筱宸指出，若是整顆吞下去，通常就是原封不動排出來，腸道根本吸收不到裡面的Omega-3，也就是白吞一場。

邱筱宸在臉書上分享，她指出，植物來源的Omega-3（ALA）吃進肚子後，肝臟會把它加工成EPA和DHA。可以形容它像身體的「滅火器」，能幫忙將身體慢性發炎壓下來。對寶寶的神經發育和一般成人心血管健康，都不能沒有Omega-3。但是在攝取這些好油脂時，最常踩到這幾個雷區：

●吃錯方法：

亞麻仁籽的外殼非常堅硬，如果整顆吞下去，通常就是原封不動排出來，腸道根本吸收不到裡面的Omega-3。

●高溫烹調：

Omega-3（如亞麻仁油）非常怕熱，只要一遇高溫就會氧化變質，反而產生自由基，越吃越發炎。

●吃過量：

如果是從天然食物（如堅果、種子）攝取，基本上不用擔心Omega-3中毒，但要小心熱量超標。

邱筱宸提醒，如果是服用高劑量的補充劑（如包含EPA者），因為它有抗凝血的潛在可能。孕媽咪在接近預產期、或是本身有服用抗凝血劑或阿斯匹靈，務必先諮詢醫師確保低出血風險。

她也分享，在三餐中輕鬆攝取Omega-3和Omega-7，不過要記得富含Omega-3的油（亞麻仁油等）絕對不要下鍋炒。最好的做法是青菜用水炒或燙熟後，裝盤上桌前，再淋上一匙好油拌一拌。這樣既能吃到完整的抗發炎營養，又不會破壞油脂結構：

●Omega-3

1.準備1-2湯匙磨碎的亞麻仁籽粉或奇亞籽，撒在無糖豆漿、燕麥粥或綠拿鐵裡一起喝。

2.每天吃3-4顆無調味的核桃。

3.若是懷孕中後期或哺乳中的素食媽咪，對DHA需求量較大，請醫師評估OK後，藻油補充劑可作為額外補充。

●Omega-7

1.下午肚子餓時，可把幾顆夏威夷豆當作低GI零食。

2.選擇品質優良的沙棘果汁、沙棘果油加進沙拉拌勻，都是非常棒的選擇。

The Taoyuan District Agricultural Research and Extension Station said it has developed three new rice cultivars that need less water and can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions thanks to their tolerance of pests, diseases and extreme weather.

Climate change over the years has led to extreme weather events such as droughts, high temperatures and uneven rainfall patterns, the station said on Tuesday last week.

High temperatures could cause more chalky rice grains in rice production, while water shortages often cause insufficient irrigation to fields and disrupted tillage in spring, it said.

Chalky rice grains have cloudy patches in their heart or belly, making them look less translucent than regular grains and tend to taste more floury and less chewy.

Volatile weather in the past few years has also led to increased cases of rice blast — a disease that can infect almost all parts of rice plants above the ground and is often caused by excessive moisture, the station said.

To stabilize rice production and ensure the quality, the station has cultivated new rice varieties that are more tolerant of diseases and droughts, with three important cultivars developed over the past few years, including “Taoyuan No. 5” in 2019, “Taoyuan No. 6” in 2021, and “Taoyuan No. 7” in 2023.

Taoyuan No. 5 has high heat resistance and a chalky grain rate of less than 10 percent, the station said.

It can be harvested up to 10 days earlier than other late-maturing varieties, and its seedlings can be planted as late as April without its production and quality being affected, it said.

Taoyuan No. 5 helps ease the competition for irrigation water in February and March, the station said, adding that it helped save about 3,000m3 of irrigation water per hectare in spring.

Taoyuan No. 6 has good resistance to pests and diseases, and was developed to promote eco-friendly farming, it said.

It does not require any pesticides during its growing period and requires only 80 percent of the nitrogen fertilizer application rates recommended for rice grown in northern Taiwan, helping to reduce about 1 tonne of carbon dioxide per hectare, the station said.

Taoyuan No. 7 was developed based on “Taoyuan No. 3” — a variety that won many local rice competitions for its excellent quality, but became prone to rice blast diseases due to climate change, it said.

The station said that by inserting rice blast-resistant gene fragments into Taoyuan No. 3, it successfully developed Taoyuan No. 7, which is highly resistant to rice blast even without fungicides being applied against the disease.

Taoyuan No. 7 almost doubled the production of Taoyuan No. 3 on average and saved NT$5,000 to NT$15,000 in labor costs and pesticide use, it said.

Its reduced fungicide use not only reduced pollution, but also helped prevent development of pathogens’ antimicrobial resistance, it said.

As of last year, a total of more than 50 hectares of farmland in water-stressed areas were planted with Taoyuan No. 5, while more than 100 hectares of farmland in Hsinchu County’s Hukou Township （湖口） were planted with Taoyuan No. 6, the station said.

Taoyuan No. 7 has also been cultivated in many rice fields across northern Taiwan, with a total planting area of up to 100 hectares, it said.
