Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor chased by stalker, court hears
NEWS link
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor said he came face-to-face with an alleged stalker wearing a balaclava who chased after him in a confrontation close to his Sandringham home in Norfolk, a court heard.

Alex Jenkinson, 39, from Stowmarket, Suffolk, is accused of causing the former duke to "fear unlawful violence" during an encounter as he walked his dogs on 6 May. Suffolk Police is applying for a civil Stalking Protection Order against Jenkinson.

The trial is expected to begin on 21 December.

Westminster Magistrates' Court heard parts of Mountbatten-Windsor's witness statement - which is due to form the centrepiece of both legal proceedings - in which he described the encounter.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Tan Ikram read out parts of the statement in which Mountbatten-Windsor said he spotted a car which he assumed belonged to press photographers, and then he and his security detail "drove past the car".

He said a man "turned and faced me – he was wearing a balaclava face covering".

He provided a description of the "out-of-place" man, and added in his statement: "I then saw a loose dog running towards him.

"Then he realised who I was and began to sprint after my vehicle."

The court hearing took place in Jenkinson's absence as he was blocked from the building after arriving with his dog.

The defendant's lawyer, Claire Howell, told Judge Ikram the dog was her client's support animal, as he has ADHD, was homeless and needed his dog with him.

She conceded that she has no documents to prove Jenkinson's medical condition, or his need for a support animal.

Jenkinson denies the public order offence against Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and has also pleaded not guilty to a further charge of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear or provoke unlawful violence against another man, Stephen Terry, in King's Lynn, on 5 May.

Jenkinson, who comes from Stowmarket, Suffolk, is also fighting the making of the Stalking Protection Order.

The defendant is on conditional bail and cannot go near Sandringham, Buckingham Palace, Balmoral, Windsor or Highgrove.

He is also forbidden from trying to contact Mountbatten-Windsor directly or indirectly, or approach him, or enter Norfolk.

UK weather: Another heatwave on the way as heat health alerts issued
NEWS link
As the extremely dry spell continues across much of England and Wales, a small village in Surrey has notched up 50 consecutive days without rain this summer.

Wisley, most famous for being the site of the 240-acre garden owned by the Royal Horticultural Society, saw 36 continuous dry days back in the hot summer of 1976 - but has comfortably exceeded that number so far this year, with no rainfall since mid-June.

It comes after the driest July for England and Wales since Met Office records began 190 years ago, external.

Meanwhile, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued further yellow heat health alerts, external for most of England this weekend as the temperatures start to build again. The alerts cover the Humber, West and East Midlands, east of England, London, and the South East and South West from 09:00 BST on Saturday until 21:00 on Tuesday 11 August.

Argos is getting a makeover - but can it attract new shoppers?
NEWS link
Do you still shop at Argos? And if so, what do you think of it?

The chain has been a fixture of the British High Street for more than 50 years and is still used by around half of all UK households.

But it has struggled to thrive in recent years, facing fierce competition from online giants like Amazon, resulting in stagnating sales and store closures.

Its owner Sainsbury's recently announced it was selling the chain for a lot less than it paid for it just 10 years ago.

But the new owners say they see "real opportunities" for growth, including opening new standalone shops. Can they succeed where Sainsbury's did not?

How a diary solved the disappearance and murder of Richard Dyson
NEWS link
When Det Con Tom Ryan came across a diary entry about an old cattle trailer in July 2025, he knew he had finally solved the murder of a man who had disappeared six years earlier.

Richard Dyson vanished without trace in November 2019. He was last seen alive on 17 November that year and was reported missing eight days later when he failed to meet his daughter, Bethany.

"He was by all accounts a very good father, and he was regularly in contact with his daughter Bethany who was, I believe, 19 at the time of his disappearance. It was totally out of character," Ryan recalled.

"It was clear that he had disappeared off the face of the Earth."

Richard, who was 55 at the time, had been living in his car at Parkside Cottage on Christopher Wright's farm on Sheffield Road in Barnsley, helping with small jobs around the farm.

The farm was searched, but other than a collection of illegal weapons belonging to Wright, nothing more unusual was found and there was no sign of Richard.

His phone, however, showed it had never left the farm.

Police believed from the outset that Richard had been killed and that Wright and his childhood friend, Karl Schwalbe, were responsible, according to Ryan.

"We very much suspected their involvement, but without a body it's very difficult to prove murder," he said.

On 28 July Wright, 73, and Schwalbe, 72, were convicted for their roles in Richard's disappearance and murder, ending a six-year wait for answers for Richard's family.

At a sentencing hearing at Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday, Wright was jailed for 35 years for murder and Schwalbe was given a three-year sentence for perverting the course of justice.

But how did police finally catch them?

Thousands of rail passengers hit by power failure disruption
NEWS link
Thousands of rail passengers have described "nightmare" journeys, after being hit by delays and cancellations following a power failure at a signalling centre that caused major disruption across northern England.

A 90-second power outage occurred in the area covering Network Rail's Manchester Rail Operating Centre just before 14:00 BST on Thursday. The BBC understands there was then a delay to back-up systems kicking in, meaning affected trains had to stop while signalling was down.

Network Rail said "engineers are making good progress fixing the signalling issues" but warned that major disruption was expected until the end of the day on Friday.

At least eight rail operators remained affected on Thursday evening.

"We've got to really understand what's gone wrong here, because clearly something has and we've got to make sure we investigate that thoroughly to understand why things haven't restored as we would have expected," said Chris Wright, Route Director NW at Network Rail.

Network Rail said services may continue to be disrupted "because many trains and crews are not where they would normally be after this unexpected incident".

It has advised passengers hoping to travel on Friday to continue to check online for information on any further disruption, external: "As soon as we have information, we will keep you updated."

Manchester Rail Operating Centre was opened in July 2014 and houses all the controls to safely operate the railway in the region, including signalling.

According to Network Rail, its operational control boundary spans from Crewe in the south to Carlisle in the north, and from Todmorden in the east to the Welsh border in the west.

The initial power outage on Thursday afternoon was part of a wider power supply outage in the Ardwick area, but the BBC understands there was a delay to the back-up supply kicking in - which exacerbated the problem.

Gianni Infantino: Uefa says Fifa's backing of its president 'changes nothing'
NEWS link
Uefa is in something of a pickle as it tries to get rid of Infantino.

The easiest route to success was the slow turning of the vice throughout this week, hoping to exert enough pressure to force him to quit.

Yet the Swiss appears to have no intention of walking away.

European football looks like an outlier, struggling to gain enough support to topple him.

On Thursday, Lamin Kaba Bajo, the president of the Gambia Football Federation, praised Infantino's "courage" and for the U-turn, and said he was "willing to give him my support more than ever".

Only Jordan, one of the few countries which did not back Infantino before last week, has publicly stated it will not vote for his re-election in March.

Concacaf, which oversees football in North and Central America and the Caribbean, also issued a public statement after the proposal was aborted but, unlike Uefa, it did not go as far as to say it had lost confidence in the Fifa president.

Conmebol, the South American confederation, said on Thursday it would not support "any action or procedure that disregards" Fifa's mechanisms before the presidential election.

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) said its executive committee "unanimously reconfirmed" its support for Infantino and thanked him for his support for African football over the years.

Ideally, Uefa would force an emergency meeting of the Fifa Council, to provide what it would consider to be a true chance to hold Infantino to account.

But getting the necessary 19 of 36 confederation and football association heads to support it has proven to be exceptionally difficult.

Uefa has also kept on the table the option of a vote of no confidence, which it can trigger via an extraordinary congress any time it wishes.

However, it would need a majority of Fifa's 211 member associations - 106 votes - to pass the motion. It would be a de facto presidential election without a second candidate.

If Uefa does not think it can get to 106, which looks a stretch, then there is little point in triggering the vote.

The other option is to try to find a unity candidate to stand against Infantino in the election next March. The favourite would be Concacaf president Victor Montagliani.

Any option which takes time gives Infantino space to build bridges, and with Fifa due to announce new funding to member associations by the end of the year he could dangle another carrot for his re-election.

Unless Uefa sticks by the nuclear option - and goes through with its threat of a boycott.

This has issues, and it is not a lever you can pull very often, otherwise it gives the impression of riding roughshod over the rest of the world.

It is one thing to use it to jettison the FFE proposal, another entirely to effectively dethrone the president with it.

Uefa's stance will soon be tested, with the Fifa Women's U20s World Cup kicking off in Poland on 5 September. Six European countries are due to take part, including England.

Trump denies US munitions shortage and said he'd seek to jail 'leakers'
NEWS link
"Each day, the signs of the enemy's diminishing capabilities become more apparent," Defence Minister Majid Ibn-e-Reza posted on X. "But our Armed Forces - backed by the nation's defence industry - are fully equipped to respond to any threat."

He added that "those who are now seeking to buy security and military superiority through imported systems will soon realise that Iran's indigenous technology is superior to any system in the region".

After the US spent vast quantities of difficult-to-manufacture weapons during the combat operation known as Operation Epic Fury and the tit-for-tat strikes since, the Trump administration has sought to assure Americans that the country's missile stockpiles remain robust.

CBS News, the BBC's US partner, reported the US has gone through much of its global stockpile of long-range precision missiles during the war, citing two unnamed sources with direct knowledge of the subject.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday evening that Trump had confronted Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth last week over a possible weapons shortfall, also citing unnamed sources. The BBC has not confirmed the report.

"The 'leakers' of these treasonous statements are being hunted down," Trump said in the post on Truth Social. "Long term jail sentences will be sought!"

He directly addressed the Washington Post's story in a later post, saying: "I really believe their fake 'reporting' is treasonous!"

"I am extremely happy with the job that Pete Hegseth is doing," he also posted.

Precise information on US missile stocks remains classified. Since becoming secretary, Hegseth has sought to put in place strict controls limiting the information that reporters can gather from the Pentagon, as well.

Using publicly available data, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a national security think tank, estimated that by the end of July, the US had between 759 and 827 Patriot missiles left - about a third of the 2,330 available before the conflict began.

It also estimates the US has now used around 60% of terminal high altitude area defense (THAAD) missiles, which are deployed to intercept strikes, Mark Cancian, a retired Marine Corps colonel and senior adviser at CSIS, said on Wednesday.

The US is facing demand for its weapons beyond the conflict with Iran, which could also put a strain on supplies.

Boxer charged with killing aid worker in Athens after his wife gave police 'key' details

Appearing in court earlier, Ahmadzai asked for an English translator but did not respond to the charges.

His lawyer, Christos Erdas, said his client had exercised his right to remain silent, and that his rights had been "violated" through leaks of evidence and documents from the case file - including his right to the presumption of innocence.

The lawyer said that when Ross was found, she had no injuries and any apparent cause of death was "entirely absent".

He said his client wanted the forensic medical report and the "toxicological and histological examinations of the deceased" to be included in the case file.

Erdas added: "His [Ahmadzai's] stance towards the prosecuting and investigating authorities did not constitute a stance of denial but, on the contrary, one of reservation, so that he may present his defence in full once the case file has been completed with the above essential documents – which were not sought by the preliminary investigating authorities – with the sole aim of establishing the substantive truth for both sides."

Ahmadzai was remanded in custody until his trial, which could take up to 18 months.

Arrests in Thetford as disorder continues for a third night
NEWS link
Policing powers were stepped up in Thetford on Thursday as the Norfolk market town braced itself for further disorder linked to anti-immigration protests.

Arrests were made on Thursday morning after a female police officer was "seriously bitten" and crowds attempted to storm homes linked to alleged asylum seekers on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. A further two people were arrested later on Thursday, taking the total arrested to five.

Pictures appeared to show a heavy police presence in the residential area of Canterbury Way on Thursday night.

A Home Office spokesperson condemned the behaviour, warning that "anyone taking part in this criminal activity will face the full force of the law".

Norfolk Police has imposed public safety measures in the town, including requiring people to remove face coverings if asked to do so or face arrest.

They will also be permitted to direct anyone committing, or who they suspect may commit, anti-social behaviour, to leave the area.

The measures were put in place from 18:00 BST on Thursday and remain until 07:00 on Friday.

Amanda Knox defends Fringe comedy show after claims it will 'trivialise violence'
NEWS link
Amanda Knox, who was convicted and later acquitted of murdering British student Meredith Kercher in Italy in 2007, has defended her solo comedy show following calls for it to be cancelled.

The sold-out show called Cartwheel, which Knox will perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, discusses motherhood and how she will explain the case to her daughter.

Knox told the BBC she is not the first person to use comedy to talk about traumatic events and said her material focuses on "how the world is unsafe and unfair towards women".

But Stephanie Kercher, the victim's sister, said she is concerned it will "normalise and trivialise" violence against women, and Meredith, in particular.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Stephanie Kercher, said: "What I would say [to Knox] is to think about the family here, think about her friends and to turn the tables if it was your sister that this had happened to, because I know you have a sister as well."

Responding to the comments, Knox said: "The interesting irony of that is that my daughter is a huge motivation for me doing this show.

"It's about how the world is unsafe and unfair towards women and what it means to raise a daughter in that world, knowing how bad it can be.

"If they [Kercher's family] saw my show, they would recognise that."

A petition against the show, set up by a friend of Meredith, has been signed by nearly 5,000 people.

It states the show disrespects her memory and risks making light of such a harrowing event.

Met Police boss admits mistake over Jason Arday plagiarism row
NEWS link
Times Higher Education (THE) reporter Grove said he had been investigating allegations Arday had plagiarised parts of his PhD, and contacted him in 2025 to offer him the right of reply.

"In early February I received a call from a Met police officer saying that a complaint had been raised against me by someone and Professor Arday was very distressed and I shouldn't contact him again," Grove told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

"It was a complete shock. Apparently it was for harassment but I hadn't contacted him for four months and then maybe I think I've only sent three or four emails to him in total."

The Met closed its inquiries into the case.

Sir Mark told LBC: "We dropped the ball on that one, let's not beat around the bush.

"A report came in of harassment or some crime like that, it should have been screened out as not requiring investigation...

"We shouldn't have made that call to him [Grove] and said that."

The University of Cambridge said on Tuesday it had begun an investigation into Arday, who became the institution's youngest black professor in 2023, following "new information" about his "academic qualifications and honorary appointments".

In a statement published by campaign group Good Law Project on Wednesday, Arday said the "relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary have taken a profound toll on me and on those I love".

"I no longer wish to feel as though I am living under a constant spotlight, where every aspect of my life is subject to public examination and judgement," he said.

Speaking of his decision to step down he added it should not "be mistaken for an acceptance of the narratives that have surrounded me".

His resignation followed a series of media reports alleging he plagiarised parts of his PhD thesis completed at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and other research.

LJMU - which awarded his PhD in 2015 - had investigated the allegations that were made last year, but did not uphold the charges.

The Times reported Arday defended himself by arguing that he had not received adequate supervision during his PhD given his autism and "learning disabilities".

In an interview with the Times, Arday said that he could not afford a proofreader to catch mistakes when he started out in academia.

Further questions were raised in the press about the truth of other claims, including Arday saying he ran 600 miles in six days and that he raised £5.5m for charity.

Stephen Bear jailed for Georgia Harrison restraining order breach
NEWS link
After serving half his original sentence, Bear was released from prison, but between 1 March 2025 and 21 July 2025 began posting on Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube and Facebook about the case and Harrison.

The court heard these were "consistently posted messages of the most abhorrent and harmful type".

Addressing Bear, the judge said: "What you did in that three to four-month period is simply victim-blaming."

Harrison did not attend court, but the prosecution read out a statement in which she described feeling isolated, exposed and unsafe, and asked for the restraining order to be extended.

She said the significant stress had made her worry about her unborn child and caused her to "spiral" on some occasions.

"I shut him out of my mind for a long time and it's not fair that he's managed to crawl his way back in," she said.

Bear arrived for Thursday's sentencing with his wife, who is eight months pregnant.

As he walked in to court, he refused to answer questions but gave a thumbs-up and said: "Wish me luck guys. See you soon, hopefully."

As his barrister spoke about why there should be a reduced sentence, Bear appeared to briefly cry.

He shook his head as he was taken away to begin another prison term.

First OpenAI, now Meta - why do AI hacks keep happening?
NEWS link
Over the last fortnight, reports of AI models going beyond their expected bounds - be that technically or morally - have been seemingly unavoidable.

What started with a trickle - ChatGPT-maker OpenAI admitting their AI had hacked the site Hugging Face - has turned into a flood of groups revealing they had discovered instances of AI going out of control.

Claude-maker Anthropic, Meta and the UK's AI Security Institute (AISI) have now each reported incidents which seem to paint a worrying picture of a world in which tech going rogue is the norm.

In reality, each case offers a window into the risks posed by increasingly capable AI agents - and the importance of testing their limits before they are released to the world.

The OpenAI incident has, as Hugging Face's co-founder Thomas Wolf described it, come as a "wake-up call" for the tech industry since it happened at the end of July.

It was a big moment which caused big companies to reflect on their own systems - and, in some cases, check they hadn't missed something similarly shocking.

Anthropic was the first to act. On Friday, the company found three instances out of thousands where its model Claude had managed to gain access to the internet.

Then on Tuesday, the AISI, the UK government agency which evaluates cutting-edge models, then said it had detected a "security incident" during a routine evaluation.

It had been testing models by both OpenAI and Anthropic, and found they too tried to carry out cyber-attacks - calling for "scrutiny, transparency, and action".

Finally followed Meta, which revealed one of its AI models had inadvertently been allowed to access the internet due to a "misconfiguration" during a third-party test.

In disclosing the incident, it is following in the footsteps of those before it.

Is Gianni Infantino still backed by the African football federations?
NEWS link
The Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture of South Africa, Gayton McKenzie, posted on X saying that Infantino had been "very good to African football".

"Africa should be cautious in joining the public lynching of Infantino. He has been very good to African football.

"We can debate his ideas but let's not forget who has been a friend to us. Many of those calling for his head want the old status quo back too."

Speaking to the BBC after Infantino's proposal emerged, football officials from Malawi and Uganda said Fifa investment had transformed the game both on and off the pitch, arguing such funding is vital given the financial realities facing many African nations.

"Malawi needs money. Malawi needs stadiums, our government cannot manage to give us even $1m every year for football," Malawi FA president Fleetwood Haiya told BBC's Newsday programme.

"Our government is not able to make sure that they have medical supplies in hospitals [and] at the same time to look at football," he said.

President of the Gambia Football Federation, Lamin Kaba Bajo, told BBC Sport: "As far as I'm concerned, most of my colleagues are concerned, we'll encourage him [Infantino] to stay, and we'll do everything within our means to ensure that he is re-elected come next year, 2027.

"That's my personal opinion as president of the federation, and a good number of African memberships also stand on that line. He is here to stay."

But support for the project on the continent was not universal. Former Sierra Leone FA president and ex-Fifa Council member Isha Johansen was among African voices opposing it, warning it risked over-commercialising football asking, "What price does one have to pay in order to get to this elevated development for football in Africa?"

Johansen urged African football chiefs to think carefully about the game's future.

Last month, Caf president Patrice Motsepe lauded Infantino for his "excellent work" after this year's World Cup and hailed him as "a good friend".

"He is loyal to Africa," Motsepe said on 22 July. "When people have been loyal to you, you never stab them in the back."

Other nations are yet to comment publicly, including Senegal, whose men's team is the second-highest ranked African team behind Morocco.

Why is Amanda Knox's upcoming Edinburgh Fringe comedy show causing controversy?

Amanda Knox, a woman involved in one of the world's most famous murder cases, is set to perform a comedy show at The Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Knox was convicted and later acquitted of murdering her British roommate, Meredith Kercher, in Italy in 2007.

Knox's show, Cartwheel, is about motherhood and how she will explain her experiences to her daughter, according to the festival's website.

"I don't joke about Meredith's death. I joke a lot about how I was vilified, but I don't joke about her murder," she had told the Telegraph newspaper, external.

Kercher's sister, Stephanie told BBC Breakfast her sibling "wouldn't find these topics of any comedy value".

A petition against the show, set up by a friend of Meredith, has been signed by just over 2,400 people, and says the show disrespects her memory and also risks normalising violence against women.

A spokesperson for Knox said the show, set to run over 11 days from Friday, honours Kercher's memory.

Women's Super League: St Helens 6-44 Wigan Warriors - Wigan hammer Saints

Betfred Women's Super League

St Helens (6) 6

Tries: McColm Goals: Gaskin

Wigan (22) 44

Tries: Derbyshire 2, Hunter 2, Davies, M Jones, Wilton, Foubister, Coleman Goals: Rowe 4

Wigan Warriors maintained their 100% record in 2026 as they comfortably saw off rivals St Helens in the first match of the new Super Four format.

It was a fifth successive win for them over Saints in the past 12 months, including a 54-6 demolition in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley, as they underlined why they are the team to beat in the Women's Super League.

The defending champions scored nine tries with two apiece for Ellise Derbyshire and Eva Hunter with further scores from Anna Davies, Molly Jones, Remi Wilton, Jenna Foubister and Mary Coleman at the BrewDog Stadium.

St Helens were outclassed on home turf and had only a Luci McColm try on the stroke of half-time on a difficult evening.

Whatever the format, though, there is no doubt that Wigan are the standard-bearers for the rest to catch.

They scored from their first set as a high kick into the sun on the last tackle was spilled by young Saints full-back Liv Leach and bounced invitingly for Derbyshire to score.

That was soon backed up by a fabulous individual try from Woman of Steel Hunter as she received the ball inside her own half and showed an irresistible combination of power, pace and sidestepping to score.

To make matters worse for Saints, Leach had to be carried off the field and by the 15th minute the contest was nearly over as Davies went over in the corner after a gorgeous kick over the top from Izzy Rowe.

Derbyshire and Hunter crossed for their second tries and only a poor conversion rate from Rowe prevented Wigan from being out of sight.

With this, Saints finally gained some possession and repeat sets and McColm went over just before the interval.

However, hopes of any kind of comeback never materialised as Jones' try on her first appearance of the season after a knee injury got Wigan moving again.

And the champions simply were too hot to handle in the final quarter as Wilton, Foubister and Coleman went over as Denis Betts' side picked up from where they had left off in their last match nearly four weeks ago.

Old habits haunt Rangers in early McInnes tenure
NEWS link
Neither Russell Martin nor Danny Rohl were able to restore past glories in their short stints in Govan while McInnes was taking Hearts to the verge of immortality.

Much of the condemnation surrounding the Ibrox club's failures last season came back to the same theme - they may be fluid and clinical going forward at times, but a soft underbelly put paid to hopes of success.

"I thought we gave up too many chances and gave teams too much encouragement," the 55-year-old added post match in Poland.

"We've got to be honest and say we are guilty of beating ourselves tonight. And that's no disrespect to our opponent because on transitions and counter-attack, it fuels them."

Rangers were flailing in the opening 45 minutes as Jagiellonia cut them open with ease, capitalising on numerous lapses in concentration.

Twelve minutes into the game, Thelo Aasgaard tried an audacious spin on the edge of the hosts' box, attempting to squeeze the ball through a small gap in the defence.

One minute later it was in the back of Rangers' net following an impressive counter.

"There's no bigger drain on confidence for any player, team, support than losing cheap goals," McInnes said.

"There were mistakes for the goals, and I understand that can happen, but we have got to be far more stingy with our work, defend the goal with our lives, don't give our opponent opportunities.

"At no cost is that ball going in our box, at no cost are they going to get a chance, and we've got to have a bit more of that approach to our work."

The central defensive partnership of Dujon Sterling and Emmanuel Fernandez looked particularly shaky.

"If you spoke to McInnes right now without a microphone in front of him, and you asked him, 'Do you trust Fernandez?', there's no way he says yes, no way," former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday said on BBC Sportsound.

"But he doesn't have an option at this moment in time to play someone else.

"I'm being very critical here, but I think Fernandez has every attribute to be a top, top central defender, yet it looks as if he hasn't had the education growing up of the basics of being a central defender."

South Korea space agency shares Moon images after SpaceX rocket debris crash
NEWS link
This Falcon 9 was in orbit since January last year, when it blasted off from Florida.

The same booster section from the January 2025 mission is due to set off on its 18th flight on 10 August. SpaceX says the mission hopes to launch 29 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit.

The rocket that blasted from Florida last January was carrying two lunar landers into space.

Its job was to fire the upper stage hard enough to send both of the landers out of Earth's orbit and onto a path towards the Moon.

The spent stage was left drifting in a long, looping orbit that swung out towards the Moon and back again.

Over the next 18 months, the gentle gravitational tug of the Earth, Moon and Sun, along with light from the Sun, gave it a faint push.

Astronomers tracking the rocket part eventually worked out that those small nudges had put it on a course towards the Moon, and it was picking up speed every day.

The impact on Wednesday happened in broad daylight for many parts of the world, but the tiny flash it produced would have been far too faint to see, even through a telescope.

Artificial Intelligence used to design brand new viruses
NEWS link
Artificial Intelligence has been used to design brand new viruses that are fully functional and can replicate in the laboratory, say US researchers.

It is the first time whole genomes have been successfully designed by AI.

The resulting 16 novel viruses were created to infect bacteria and pose no threat to people.

The breakthrough has been labelled a "very significant turning point" in science that could unlock a new era for treating disease. But experts have also warned AI-designed viruses raise "urgent" safety and security concerns.

AI tools are rapidly advancing and have already been used to design new antibiotics.

But that is relatively simple compared with designing a new viable virus from scratch.

"This is a next step in the complexity that's designable by generative AI, this is the first time generative AI has been used to design a complete genome, it's something that can replicate and have other functions inside cells… this was new territory for us," Brian Hie, assistant professor at Stanford University, told the BBC.

Serious questions for Cambridge after professor at centre of plagiarism row resigns
NEWS link
The University of Cambridge is facing serious questions about its academic standards and push for diversity after its youngest black professor resigned amid allegations of copying other academics' research.

Jason Arday's appointment in 2023 was hailed at the time as a progressive moment. Now, Cambridge says it has launched an investigation after "new information" emerged about his academic qualifications and honorary appointments.

There are two fundamental questions for the university.

Did it fail to adequately check Arday's credentials when appointing him, and did it defend that decision because of an institutional push to position itself as more diverse?

For one of the world's leading universities known for academic excellence and globally significant research, this is about its institutional culture and decision-making at the highest level.

The biggest reputational risk surrounds the accusations of academic plagiarism now under investigation - and denied by Arday - because they get to the heart of what a university is about.

The University of Cambridge uses the common definition of plagiarism as "passing off someone else's work as if it were your own without appropriate acknowledgement".

There is no allegation more serious that can be levelled at an academic.

One of the fundamental purposes of a research-led university is the creation of knowledge through original thinking, insights and inquiry.

The quality of this is the foundation of Cambridge's reputation, and a source of significant funding.

Between 3,000 and 5,000 migrants remain in the Spanish territory of Ceuta following the arrival of many times that number of people last week, the north African exclave's leader has said.

Juan Jesús Vivas told the European Parliament of his "profound sorrow" over the "irreparable tragedy" of 100 deaths that had occurred after roughly 78,000 migrants from neighbouring Morocco arrived by sea in a matter of hours.

His comments come as new calls for mass crossings circulate on social media, according to Moroccan media.

The crisis has created tensions among EU nations who share open borders and has sparked criticism of the Spanish government.

However the EU Commission has commended Spain's "swift response" to the crisis, which has included deploying armed forces to Ceuta and its other territory on the north African coast, Melilla.

Vivas, a conservative, was critical of the national government's response while addressing the European Parliament on Thursday, saying that he had personally told Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez that it had been late and insufficient.

"The fact that we don't have numbers on how many are still in Ceuta shows how few resources we have to deal with this situation," Ceuta's mayor-president said. Previous warnings by local officials of an increase in migrant crossings by sea had been ignored, he said.

Conservatives pledge to ban foreign nationals from social housing
NEWS link
The Conservatives have said they would end the provision of social housing for foreign nationals in England if they win power at the next election.

The party said ending new tenancies for all foreign nationals, as well as current tenancies for couples where neither person is a UK, Irish or EU citizen, would free up an estimated 228,144 homes for British families.

The Conservatives said Labour had "lost control of immigration" and British families had been left sitting on housing waiting lists as a result.

But Labour said the policy was an "unserious, unworkable proposal, copied from Reform, that does nothing to tackle the housing crisis the Tories themselves created".

In June, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said he would make it a requirement for foreign national tenants to find private accommodation within three months or face possible deportation if his party won power.

Under the Tory proposals, ineligible tenants would be expected to move out of their homes within six months.

Any single person currently living in social housing who is not a UK, Irish or EU citizen would lose their social home. This includes those with or without children.

Couples, where neither of them are UK or EU citizens, and they do not have EU settled status, will also lose their entitlement.

Anyone with EU settled status would not be evicted.

For future tenancies, UK nationals and those with EU settled status would be eligible but any new EU citizens without settled status would not be.

Foreign nationals with settled status, refugee status, or specific humanitarian protections can currently qualify for social housing.

Asylum seekers are not eligible for social housing, unless in exceptional circumstances such as domestic abuse cases.

Social housing, usually provided by housing associations or local councils, is typically cheaper and more secure than privately rented homes.

When they were last in government in 2024, the Conservatives were considering plans to make it a requirement for foreign nationals to have to live in the UK for 10 years before qualifying for social housing.

There are 1.34 million households on social housing waiting lists, as of March 2025, the latest government figures.

The vast majority of social housing lettings are given to single people.

In 2024-25, most lead tenants of new social lettings, the person in whose name the social home is rented, were UK nationals - 89% or 233,000 tenants.

In the same period, 2.3% of new lettings were given to refugees - 800 refugees were UK nationals, while the remaining 3,900 were non-UK nationals.

The most common nationality of refugees in a new social letting was Afghanistan with the second most common being Ukraine.

Israel charges settler over killing of Palestinian involved in Oscar-winning West Bank film

Israeli prosecutors have charged a settler over the killing of a Palestinian activist in the occupied West Bank who helped film Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land.

Yinon Levy was charged with reckless manslaughter over the July 2025 shooting of Odeh Hathaleen, according to Israel's Southern District Prosecutor's Office.

Israeli rights group B'Tselem said it was the first time an Israeli had been indicted for killing a Palestinian in the West Bank for nearly three years.

A lawyer for Hathaleen's family said they hoped the charges marked a "turning point" in the consequences settlers face for violence against Palestinians.

In a letter seen by The Associated Press, Levy said he would fight for his innocence in court.

He wrote that prosecutors should not penalise acts of self-defence and accused them of providing "de facto support for terrorism", the news agency reported.

A lawyer for Levy, Avichai Hajbi, told the AP the prosecution had made a "mistaken decision".

The charges against Levy also include armed trespassing and malicious property damage during the incident in which settlers operated an excavator in the Palestinian village of Umm al-Khair, leading to a confrontation with residents.

According to the indictment, at some point during the confrontation Levy cocked his gun and fired in the direction of residents, hitting Hathaleen. He then fired another shot into the air, prosecutors said.

Footage of the incident was shared widely online. Levy has previously denied firing the shot that killed Hathaleen.

The indictment is the first since the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel which triggered the Gaza war and led to a rise in settler violence in the West Bank, B'Tselem said.

At least 1,110 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers and settlers in the West Bank since then, according to the UN. At least 41 Israelis have been killed either by a Palestinian armed group or civilian in the West Bank during the same period, the UN said.

B'Tselem described the decision to indict Levy as the "exception that proves the rule".

"The impunity Israel grants to soldiers and settlers who harm Palestinians is not a failure of the system - it is a central component of a policy designed to allow the violence to continue and escalate," it said.

Mattan Berner-Kadish, an Israeli-American activist who was at the scene, told the BBC: "I think the general reaction is happiness that anything is happening while also feeling that it should be a murder charge and a longer maximum sentence.

"Mixed feelings but also certainly pleasantly surprised and happy there might be consequences," he added.

Hathaleen, a teacher and father-of-three, was a prominent voice against settler violence in the occupied West Bank.

He featured in the 2025 Oscar-winning film No Other Land, that follows the legal fight between the Israeli government and Palestinians over Masafer Yatta, a West Bank community of about 20 villages.

Israel's Supreme Court ruled to allow the demolition of homes and expulsion of more than 1,000 villagers in 2022.

Levy, a leader of an outpost farm, was sanctioned by the UK in 2024 because he "used physical aggression, threatened families at gunpoint, and destroyed property as part of a targeted and calculated effort to displace Palestinian communities", the UK government said at the time.

He denied the allegations to the BBC in 2024.

He was also sanctioned by the US under the Biden administration but those sanctions were subsequently lifted under President Donald Trump.

Judge grants Donald Trump's request to delay handing financial records to BBC
NEWS link
A judge has granted Donald Trump's request to delay handing over financial records to the BBC as part of his $10bn (£7.4bn) lawsuit against the broadcaster.

The US president is suing the BBC over an episode of Panorama that edited together two different sections of a speech he gave before the 2021 Capitol riots.

The BBC has asked for some of Trump's financial records in relation to his argument that the documentary damaged the president's business interests.

A judge granted that request in July and the first documents were due to be filed on Thursday, but another judge has now agreed to an emergency motion filed by Trump's lawyers earlier this week to pause the disclosure.

The president's legal team said disclosure of the financial records would cause him "irreparable harm".

They argued that no such revelations should be made until the court rules on an objection to the order requiring the disclosure.

Trump has also recently asked to amend his main case, which his lawyers said would make the document release unnecessary.

The president has asked for his central complaint against the BBC to be amended so it no longer claims the documentary damaged his brands and businesses. His lawyers have asked that the case is amended to claim for damages for "the reputational injury to the President, full stop".

In a ruling on Thursday, the judge said the order for financial information disclosure would be paused until the amendment question is resolved.

The BBC had said Trump's request for a delay to disclosure was "a transparent effort to evade this court's clear and direct order and to continue to avoid the discovery obligations that the plaintiff took on when he chose to file this lawsuit".

"In fact, this is just the latest in [Trump's] months-long refusal to provide documents, sworn answers to interrogatories, deposition dates, any meaningful information to support his pursuit of $10bn from the BBC for a documentary the BBC never aired in the United States."

Trump's lawsuit - filed in Florida - accuses the BBC of "intentionally, maliciously, and deceptively doctoring" the speech he gave outside the Capitol on 6 January 2021.

The BBC has apologised for an editing error that gave "the mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action".

However, the BBC has asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that the programme doesn't meet the legal criteria for defamation and wasn't made available on its US platforms.

Last month, Trump's lawyers admitted they had no evidence that the documentary was available in the US on the BBC's BritBox subscription service, as they had originally claimed, or on BBC.com, BBC Select or through US broadcasters.

Trump also recently agreed to drop the BBC's commercial arm BBC Studios from his lawsuit, after the BBC argued the company had "no role in creating or producing the documentary".

Vinicius Jr: Real Madrid and Brazil winger agree new six-year deal on improved terms
NEWS link
Talks over a deal were at an impasse until Real made a new offer on Wednesday, with Vinicius understood to be appreciative of the fresh terms.

He joined Real from Brazilian side Flamengo in 2018 and signed a contract extension three years ago.

Real and his representatives have been in talks over a fresh deal for the past 18 months but he has now extended his stay at what he has previously called the club of his "dreams".

He returned to the club on Monday for his first pre-season training session and medical assessment following his World Cup campaign with Brazil.

Vinicius has scored 128 goals in 375 appearances for Real across all competitions, while he has 13 goals in 54 caps for Brazil.

He has helped Real win two Champions League titles, three La Ligas and one Copa del Rey during his time at the club.

It is understood Arsenal would have accelerated their interest in the Brazilian if he had rejected Real's terms but the Premier League champions must now look elsewhere as they target a left-sided forward.

Vincius' contract extension comes on the same day Real announced the signing of Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig for a fee worth up to £120m (140m euros).

Diomande is Real's sixth summer signing under new head coach Jose Mourinho, joining Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Carlos Espi.

Real are also targeting Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri but now face competition from bitter rivals Barcelona.

Man City transfers: Jeremy Doku signs new deal, Nico Gonzalez wants to stay

Approaching the second week of August and City have only signed one player, Elliot Anderson, who is likely to be in the first XI this season.

The fee paid to Nottingham Forest for the England international is a club record £116m, with the 23-year-old seemingly a replacement for Bernardo Silva, who departed at the end of his contract and joined Real Madrid.

Teenage winger Jeremy Monga may be given playing time in the academy after joining from Leicester, while goalkeeper Pierce Charles and winger Mathys Detourbet both immediately went out on loan after joining.

New boss Enzo Maresca said on Tuesday that director of football Hugo Viana and chief executive Ferran Soriano had both travelled to South Korea, where the team are currently spending pre-season, and the Italian admitted "we need to something" in regards to transfers.

Though there is an acknowledgement that they have not been as active as they would have liked, senior City sources say they are "relaxed" about the situation and have full "trust" in their transfer strategy.

It has been pointed out that Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi were long-term targets and were signed in January, deals that were brought forward from this summer and both have made a positive impact.

The squad is seen to be "young" and "exciting", one which claimed both domestic cups last season, with 20-year-old Brazilian Vitor Reis returning after a season-long loan at Girona and expected to be past of the first-team.

In terms of outgoings, Rodri is yet to sign a new contract and is now attracting attention from both Real Madrid and Barcelona, while fellow midfielder Tijjani Reijnders is likely to leave and has interest from Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, BBC Sport said last month winger Savinho is open to leaving the club with Tottenham exploring a move, yet nothing has materialised.

If there are departures from the club, the idea - as it stands - is to bring in a replacement.

There is interest in Chelsea's Pedro Neto, while talks are ongoing for Lille's Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi and Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.

Despite the lack of movement, there remains an air of calmness around the hierarchy at the Etihad.

Tour de France Femmes: Kimberley Le Court wins stage six as Marlen Reusser retains yellow jersey

Kimberley Le Court overcame a mechanical failure before winning a sprint finish to seal victory in stage six of the Tour de France Femmes on Thursday, as Swiss rider Marlen Reusser held on to the overall lead.

Le Court of AG Insurance-Soudal, who also crashed early on in the stage, was forced her to change bike just 15 km from the end.

The Mauritian fought her way back into contention shortly before the day's final climb, forming part of a small eight-rider breakaway group 10 km from the finish.

Le Court, 30, had just enough performance left to launch a sprint with 300m to go, holding off French rider Cedrine Kerbaol on the line to seal victory, with Puck Pieterse of the Netherlands taking third place.

Movistar's Reusser retains the yellow jersey after the 153.4km ride from Montbrison to Tournon-sur-Rhone, holding a 12-second lead over Dutch rider Demi Vollering.

Vogue just gave another nod of approval to the tech world
NEWS link
Vogue World is coming to San Francisco next year — perhaps another indication that tech billionaires have become leaders in the fashion zeitgeist.

Of course, the announcement of the enormous fashion/art/music event doesn’t say that. Instead, Anna Wintour wrote that Vogue believes in celebrating cities and “San Francisco is a city like none other.”

“It’s a place of diverse communities living side by side, a place that loves the arts, loves creativity, and isn’t afraid of change.” She also noted the city’s history of rebelliousness and innovation.

“I love that San Francisco has always stood up for values and the things it believes in,” Wintour wrote. “Vogue World will support San Francisco’s creative minds and strengthen the entire ecosystem — and it will offer another opportunity to show San Francisco is on the rise.”

There were rumors that Vogue World would head to San Francisco after Winter was seen having meetings with the city’s mayor, Daniel Lurie.

Plus, in the past year, Wintour has cozied up to the most powerful names in tech, culminating in this year’s Met Gala, which saw Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sanchez, serve as lead sponsors for the event. Google’s Sergey Brin and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg were also spotted at the event (the latter’s first, that is). In fact, OpenAI bought a table, as did Meta and Snap (for $350,000 a pop). It’s true that TikTok, Apple, and Instagram previously sponsored the event, but the presence of the tech crowd was so considerable that the Met Gala this year was dubbed the “tech gala” in some places.

Last year, Vogue put Lauren Sanchez on the cover of the magazine after her wedding to the Amazon founder. To the fashion world, this was Wintour’s stamp of approval — not just for Sanchez’s ascent into the fashion world, but that tech and its leaders were worthy of cultural recognition.

Though Bezos and Sanchez reportedly live in Florida (and Amazon is, of course, headquartered in the Seattle area), there is no city more associated with tech than San Francisco. By locating Vogue World there, this is another indication of Wintour’s approval.

Vogue, as a media publication, is always following the money, and as a cultural bible, is always looking for ways to stay relevant. Turning toward the worldwide headquarters of AI, good or bad, is brilliant for business (and Wintour is nothing if not brilliant).

But Vogue World was previously held in New York, London, Paris, and this year, Milan. Maybe because I live in an East Coast bubble, but I’ve not heard anyone in recent years refer to San Francisco as a beacon of style to rank alongside these other cities.

While the city has a reputation as the land of the free-spirited bohemian, tech and its workers have a reputation for hoodies, Patagonia vests, and expensive athletic shoes, if they even dress up that much.

For instance, billionaire Alexandr Wang, who is now running Meta’s all-important Superintelligence Labs, just did an interview with Y Combinator’s Garry Tan in front of a packed stadium wearing a faded Nintendo T-shirt and what looked like a pair of Crocs. Comfy? Yes. High fashion? Decidedly no.

But maybe that’s changing. Wang’s boss, Mark Zuckerberg, who once always appeared in a plain gray T-shirt and jeans, has made efforts in recent years to become more fashionable. Zuck and his wife Priscilla Chan were spotted front row at a Prada show this season. The new campaign for Meta Glasses has a slew of celeb ambassadors and looks like it could be a Saint Laurent or Balenciaga ad.

OpenAI and Palantir have recently released merch collabs, playing on the minimalist style of tech workers (the merch line of the latter, I would argue, looks inspired by Virgil Abloh’s Off-White).

I concede that creatively there is much to be done with the understated, Northern California style. Surrounded by beautiful nature and cooler temperatures, plenty of fashion designers could be motivated by San Francisco’s tech industry. I look forward to seeing Claude-inspired terra cotta-colored gowns and Vogue-emblazoned quarter-zips soon.

Google says hackers are calling financial firm employees to hack and extort victims
NEWS link
Even in the age of AI-powered autonomous cyberattacks, the crude, tried and tested hacking techniques of tricking victims into doing things they shouldn’t are still producing great results.

Groups of unknown hackers are targeting and breaking into large financial and investment firms in the United States with the goal of stealing sensitive data to extort the victims with the threat of publishing it, Google’s security researchers wrote in a report on Thursday.

The company did not name the victims, but Reuters reported that among them there are leading private equity firms such as Apollo Global Management, Bain Capital, Blackstone, Bridgewater Associates, CME Group, KKR, Moody’s, and TPG.

The hacking groups, which Google dubbed Falcon, Helix, Pink, and Redact, are using an old-fashioned technique to break into those firms: phone calls to employees’ personal cellphones in which the hackers pretend to be co-workers or IT helpdesk staffers, during which they try to trick targets into entering their credentials and multi-factor codes on spoofed websites, according to Google. In cybersecurity parlance, this technique is known as voice phishing, or vishing.

Some of the groups identified by Google run websites where they publicize their hacks and threaten to leak the stolen data as a way to extort the victims into paying a ransom, a common strategy among cybercriminals.

“We conduct every negotiation on professional terms. The publication of your data is never our preferred resolution; it is the consequence of refusal to engage, deliberate stalling, or failure to honor an agreement,” read one of the sites. “Respond promptly and in good faith, and the matter is resolved without further incident.”

Google researchers said that the different groups may all be part of a larger umbrella collective the company tracks under the name UNC6671. But it’s unclear if they are affiliates, splinter groups, or they all use the same Phishing-as-a-Service infrastructure.

“We believe that this most likely reflects a coordinated group of threat actors operating multiple public extortion brands possibly in an effort to compartmentalize operations, hide overall breach volumes, and isolate any negotiation fallout,” read the report.

According to Google, the hacking groups have also previously targeted large companies in the manufacturing, real estate, healthcare, and insurance sectors, as well as tech, transportation, and hospitality companies with the goal of stealing “valuable intellectual property, software source code, or sensitive VIP client data.”

More recently, the hackers have targeted legal and financial organizations such as private equity firms. “Concentrating on organizations involved in mergers, acquisitions, capital deployment, and litigation may reflect a strategy to target high-value corporate and confidential data to maximize leverage extortion demands,” wrote Google’s researchers.

Google said that one cryptocurrency wallet associated with one of the hacking groups received around $10 million in bitcoin in the first few months of this year, and that the hackers usually demand from $750,000 to $3 million from victims.

Laurie Bischel, a spokesperson for CME Group, declined to comment.

Apollo Global Management, Bain Capital, Blackstone, Bridgewater Associates, KKR, Moody’s, and TPG did not respond to a request for comment.

China-linked LightSpy spyware caught targeting victims in 13 countries, including the US
NEWS link
Security researchers say they have evidence that a Chinese-linked spyware has expanded from mainland China to now target victims in over a dozen countries, including across Europe and the United States. The previously identified spyware also has new functionality capable of stealing troves of data and remotely bricking devices.

The researchers at cybersecurity firm Arctic Wolf said that the LightSpy spyware, first discovered in 2018 and previously linked to Chinese state-backed hackers, has since evolved into a commercial spyware platform operated by a single threat actor who caters to governments, enterprises, and militaries.

The platform is said to feature custom branding, billing, and demos for advertising it to prospective customers.

The findings underscore how the use of spyware continues to proliferate beyond governments and nation-backed hackers, and more broadly into the private industry.

LightSpy is a modular spyware platform that allows whoever is controlling it to attack a multitude of different devices, including smartphones, Apple devices, Linux servers, and Windows PCs. By using exploits for each device, the spyware can steal large amounts of sensitive information from its targets, including precise location data, chat messages, screen recordings, and stored passwords. The researchers also said the code is capable of remotely wiping and destroying data on a compromised device.

The researchers said that LightSpy has now been identified infecting routers, which researchers say they had not seen before. By attacking routers, the hackers can gain visibility and access to any other device on the same network.

Some of the compromised routers are associated with NATO member countries, said Arctic Wolf.

According to the company, LightSpy operates a network of at least 117 servers in several countries around the world.

The researchers said they were able to link the latest activity to a Chinese contractor after one of the spyware’s operators used the LightSpy administrator’s panel to place an order with Kentucky Fried Chicken using his real name and office address.

Hacker pleads guilty to stealing data from more than 165 Snowflake customers
NEWS link
In Brief

Connor Moucka, a 26-year-old Canadian citizen, has pled guilty to hacking more than 165 companies, stealing billions of records, and extorting several companies and individuals.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the guilty plea in a press release.

Moucka was accused of hacking cloud provider Snowflake, which allowed him and his co-conspirators to break into dozens of the company’s customers, including AT&T, LendingTree, and Ticketmaster. Moucka stole data from more than 100 million AT&T customers, including call and texting records, as well as banking information, driver’s license numbers, and Social Security numbers from other breaches.

Over the years, Moucka and his accomplices received more than $2.5 million in ransom payments. The hacker also received around $500,000 for selling victims’ data on hacking forums such as the notorious BreachForums. Victims of Moucka and his accomplices’ hacks suffered $9.5 million in losses, according to the DOJ.

“Connor Moucka’s threats and re-extortion tactics were calculated and predatory, and his actions did real harm to his victims, be they companies targeted for theft and extortion or the millions of everyday people who are their customers,” said W. Mike Herrington, an FBI special agent who worked on the case.

Moucka, who was known online as Waifu and Judische, was arrested in Canada at the end of 2024, just months after the Snowflake breaches.

At the time, Austin Larsen, a senior researcher at Google’s cybersecurity firm Mandiant who had been investigating the Snowflake hacks, said Moucka was “one of the most consequential” hackers of 2024.

Moucka is scheduled to be sentenced on October 27 and faces decades in prison.

TikTok lays off 250 employees, shutters its Nashville office
NEWS link
In Brief

TikTok is laying off 250 employees and closing its Nashville office, which housed some members of TikTok’s content-moderation team. The news was first reported by The New York Times.

Zanna Crowley, a spokesperson for the TikTok USDS Joint Venture, confirmed the news, saying that the shuttering was to “streamline our operations and better align our teams for long-term growth.”

“We remain fully committed to providing secure, safe and positive experiences for the 200 million Americans that create, discover and connect with what they love on TikTok,” the spokesperson said.

The cuts come as social media companies rely more on AI to monitor and remove violent or explicit content on their platforms.

The Nashville office, which TikTok leased in 2024, will close on October 5.

OpenAI’s new AI smart speaker will reportedly sell for between $300-$400
NEWS link
In Brief

More details continue to trickle out about OpenAI’s mysterious new hardware device — described previously as an AI-fueled smart speaker that will be the “physical manifestation” of ChatGPT.

Bloomberg now reports that the device will be “donut-shaped,” designed thusly to allow users to carry it around their home and place it in different locations, like a bedside table or a kitchen counter.

It will be constructed from “high-quality metal,” have a “premium look,” and (in a detail that mystifies) will have distinct “moving parts,” sources told Bloomberg.

It also could be slightly more expensive than your average smart speaker, perhaps $300 to $400 per unit, according to this report. For comparison, most of Amazon’s smart home speakers range in price from $40 on the low end to $240 on the high end.

So, to sum up: an expensive talking AI donut that has … moving parts? OpenAI releasing a smart home device has a certain logic to it, in that it would further integrate ChatGPT into users’ lives. However, historically speaking, smart speakers have not always been profitable and may prove a difficult market to break into. The potentially high price point also might not help.

The device, which is being developed in partnership with LoveFrom, the design studio founded by famous former Apple developer Jony Ive, will likely be released at some point in 2027, Bloomberg writes.

The company’s attempt to enter the hardware market has not gone off without a hitch. OpenAI is being sued by the current king of hardware, Apple, which has accused the AI lab of stealing trade secrets. OpenAI has denied wrongdoing.

Defense tech Hadrian raises $1.37B at $8B valuation
NEWS link
In Brief

Defense tech Hadrian announced on Thursday that it had raised a fresh $1.37 billion round at a valuation of $7.87 billion from a mile-long list of well-known investors.

The lead investors in the round include WCM Investment Management, Washington Harbour Partners, Valor Equity Partners, 137 Ventures, and Baillie Gifford. Participating investors include 1789 Capital, Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, funds managed by Apollo and T. Rowe Price, as well as firms like CapitalG, Andreessen Horowitz, Founders Fund, Lux Capital, Altimeter, and others.

Founders Fund and Lux led the company’s $260 million Series C financing about a year ago, bringing the total raised to date to around $2 billion, according to PitchBook estimates.

Hadrian is an interesting defense tech in that it’s not trying to build new AI-powered weapons. The company is building automated manufacturing facilities that will mass-produce parts for the vehicles that the military complex already relies on.

For instance, in March, Hadrian opened a facility in Alabama to mass-produce parts for submarines, making that its fourth facility. The deal for that facility, structured as a public/private partnership, was valued at $2.4 billion, Hadrian said.

Ford needs another Taurus, and the $30K Fathom EV pickup isn’t it
NEWS link
Few automotive companies are as dependent on breakout hits as Ford. It’s almost as though it’s baked into the company’s DNA: From the Model T and the Taurus to the F-150 and the Explorer, Ford has lurched from one success to another.

Recently, though, the automaker has been coming up empty handed. While its U.S. vehicle sales rose 6% year-over-year to 2.08 million in 2025, they’re today less than half their peak of 4.48 million in 2000. Of the new vehicles that Ford has introduced in recent years, none have become a sensation.

Ford CEO Jim Farley is betting its forthcoming EV pickup, Fathom, will change its fortunes, calling the introduction of the truck and its Universal EV platform a “Model T moment” for the company. Ford needs a product that can compete with Chinese EVs, which have been taking the world by storm. Yet, for reasons that are both within and beyond Ford’s control, the Fathom is unlikely to be another Taurus or Explorer, two hits that drove Ford sales in the 1990s.

Now, Fathom could be a minor success. Any way you spin it, the base model will be a good deal. On Thursday, Ford said the Fathom would start at $29,945, including the destination fee. That’s significantly below the $50,000 average for new vehicles and the $56,000 average for EVs. It’s also about $5,000 lower than the Keating Line — the average listing price of the largest price segment available at dealers.

But consumers don’t decide to buy a car based on price alone. Here’s where Ford could run into some challenges.

The Fathom will be a compact pickup truck, a form factor that the market largely ignored until Ford started selling the Maverick in 2021. The Fathom is entering an under-exploited niche, but it doesn’t appear to be one with enormous potential either. Sales of the Maverick offer a clue: they’ve been brisk, but at 155,000 last year, the small truck is not a blockbuster, either. The Taurus sold more than twice as many at its peak in 1992.

Now, the Fathom appears to have a few advantages over the Maverick. For one, passengers should enjoy a bit more interior space, according to Ford. The EV will also have a frunk, which could sway some buyers of traditional cars who have overlooked pickup trucks for lack of closed storage.

But the Fathom is still a pickup, and not everyone loves that look. The majority of the market today is dominated by SUVs, with just over 70% of prospective buyers looking for an SUV, compared with 33% for pickups, according to Cox Automotive.

Even among pickup fans, the Fathom may struggle to draw buyers. For many, trucks are a vibe. They want them to look ready to tackle the Rubicon trail, even if they never make it beyond the city limits. Every automaker is aware of this. GM, in a recent briefing I attended, made a point to mention how it is delivering the “lifted trucks” that its customers are demanding. The Fathom, from the little we’ve seen so far, doesn’t scream “rugged.”

Then there’s the EV thing. Most people who buy an EV, myself included, would never buy an internal combustion vehicle again, but a lot of people don’t love change. They’re content with gas-powered cars and trucks, and many dealers are happy to keep them in one.

The Fathom’s success won’t be dictated entirely by the whims of the market, though. Ford can spend on marketing and dealer training to overcome the EV hurdle, and may even convince people that a truck with a frunk is an ideal replacement for a sedan. And it’s almost a guarantee that Ford will introduce a ruggedized version of the Fathom.

Will that be enough to make the Fathom a breakout hit? Probably not. But maybe Ford doesn’t need it to be.

Maybe the Fathom is a test of its new production process, a toe in the water at a part of the beach that hasn’t been overrun. Compact trucks aren’t setting sales records, but the market for them is still growing. Ford can use that demand to soak up every Fathom it makes while it refines its new platform and process. Then, once it’s confident it has the kinks sorted out, it can expand it to other segments, including SUVs.

The Fathom may not be Ford’s swing for the fences. Maybe the company’s merely hoping to get on base and lay the groundwork for the next model rolling off the Universal EV platform — the one it really needs to be a home run.

Bumble teases a swipe-free future as it doubles down on IRL meetups
NEWS link
Tinder isn’t the only major dating app turning away from the swipe and toward real-world events to attract Gen Z users who’ve grown tired of traditional online dating. On Wednesday, Bumble touted the early success of its newest app, Plans, designed to connect people “IRL” in low-pressure group settings, and spoke of what comes next for Bumble’s flagship app after the “swipe” is dead.

On its second-quarter earnings call with investors, Bumble CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd said Plans showed “promising results” in early tests over the past few months, and the company would “lean more into real-life experiences” going forward.

Combined with Tinder’s news this week that it, too, is doubling down on in-person events, it’s clear there’s a major shift happening in online dating. Simply put, the swipe era is coming to an end.

“I am a firm believer that the future of meeting people in groups will become more important. People love to come together in groups and see who they naturally share chemistry with once they have met,” Wolfe Herd told analysts on the call. “Group socializing is a real part of how Gen Z prefers to meet, and we believe Bumble represents a natural bridge from meeting to socializing to then dating.”

The company first experimented with real-world, platonic connections with Bumble BFF, an app for making friends, which has shown some traction with Gen Z women.

With Plans, however, the idea is to give young people a way to meet up with others in their community to develop friendships over small group drinks and dinners at local spots, the company said when announcing the app last month. These meetups could later lead to deeper friendships or romantic connections, Bumble believes. By not being primarily focused on dating, it can take the pressure off these first-time encounters.

In addition, users on Plans can continue their chats on Bumble’s app without having to swipe or give out their phone number. In other words, Bumble is promoting “no swiping” as a plus here, suggesting that this format for finding matches is no longer desired among younger users.

Wolfe Herd also teased that Bumble is working on a new interaction model to replace the swipe entirely.

“The core idea is a shift away from optimizing for swipe speed and velocity towards something more intentional, fewer, better, more considered signals,” she said, saying the shift to the “swipe-free” model would happen gradually so as not to disrupt the ecosystem.

“What will replace the swipe? I will be keeping under wraps a bit longer for competitive purposes, but it is designed to generate more immediate interactions and, most importantly, better outcomes, mimicking real life and eliminating the friction and delay that exists in [the] current dating app model,” she added.

The company also plans to leverage more AI tools under the hood to help deliver improved results, but cautioned this would not mean Bumble was becoming an “AI-driven experience.”

Though Bumble beat on earnings in Q2, it’s still in a turnaround phase. The company’s revenue was down 15.2% to $210.5 million year-over-year, and its stock suffered over its Q3 forecast, which shows a decline in paying customers.

ChatGPT brings unlimited text chats to free users
NEWS link
OpenAI is removing limits on text-based chats for all users on ChatGPT, which recently crossed the 1 billion weekly user mark, the company announced today.

The new GPT-5.6 Luna model will power this experience and will be the default model for Free and Go users, replacing GPT-5.5.

Both users will also get a new “Think” button that lets them select higher reasoning power for complex questions. OpenAI said that there will still be separate limits for files, images, voice, and image generation.

The update brings changes for Plus and Pro users as well. They’ll gain access to an upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model that’s better for quick tasks such as questions, web research, advice, planning, writing, and making decisions. The company noted that this new model will give more compact and robust answers. (Notably, this is a separate version from GPT-5.6 Sol used for Codex and Work, which is unchanged.)

ChatGPT Plus and Pro users are also getting a thinking slider to adjust “how much” thought the model puts into an answer. They can tune the thinking slider based on complexity and steps involved in solving a query.

OpenAI said an internal evaluation found that, compared to GPT-5.5-Instant, factual errors were 62% less common for GPT-5.6 Luna and 68% less common for GPT-5.6 Sol.

The updated version of GPT-5.6 Sol is available to Plus and Pro users today, while the other changes for Free and Go users are arriving this week. Next week, users will gain access to unlimited text chats and the new Think button for harder questions.

Naïve raises $28.5M to automate the grunt work of setting up and running a company
NEWS link
Developers detest drudgery. The entire field of programming is proof of how hard people will work to automate away the boring tasks involved in building things. And, as vibe coding has proved, they’ve even managed to find ways to not do most of the work of putting products together.

So I wasn’t very surprised to hear that Naïve, which offers infrastructure that lets AI agents take on the bulk of the work involved in running a business, had signed up over 30,000 developer customers within months of its launch.

Taking vibe coding a step further, the startup claims its infra can automate most of the work in setting up and running a business — provided you supply the AI agents and the required token budget, of course. It packages the process of assembling payments, email accounts, phone numbers, cloud infrastructure, storage, and company incorporation behind a single API.

Naïve supplies a prompt that developers can provide to tools like Cursor, Claude Code, or Codex, which can connect to the company’s API to provision the infrastructure to set up a business. It lets an agent orchestrate the formation of a U.S. LLC, supplying details such as the state, industry code, business description, and proposed names, though users are still required to be involved to complete KYC/KYB processes and make any required payments.

The rest of the set up can be done by your AI agents, including setting up email inboxes, virtual cards, phone numbers, databases, computing resources and connections to services such as Stripe and QuickBooks. A governance layer promises to help users set budgets, restrict their agents’ capabilities, and require human approval before sensitive actions are carried out. The company also provides templates for businesses, such as AI SEO, full-stack SaaS apps, recruiting, accounting, customer support, and even a mobile emulator with which agents can operate smartphone apps on emulated devices.

The allure of such automation has clearly resonated, as evidenced by the user figure mentioned above. And Naïve has scaled annual run-rate revenue by 10x to the low double-digit millions over the past six months, CEO and co-founder Sean Dorje said.

Based on that traction, the company has now raised $28.5 million in a Series A funding round led by Nexus Venture Partners, TechCrunch has exclusively learned.

Dorje told TechCrunch that his customers are using Naïve to run autonomous businesses such as AI automation agencies, “face-less” online content channels on TikTok and YouTube, and even a rental car agency. In one case, he discovered Naïve’s infrastructure supporting a TikTok channel that posted AI-generated videos of cats and dogs dancing and boxing.

“I think the one that’s growing the fastest right now is AI automation agencies,” Dorje said. “You know, the first business that a lot of people start is genuinely just selling agents to other small businesses […] We have some customers who run an entire rental-car agency autonomously.”

But this toolkit for running businesses may only be part of Naïve’s opportunity. Using AI to automate everything sounds great, but the cost of keeping agents running can grow astronomical as they call expensive AI models, pass large amounts of context between tasks, and consume resources while sitting idle.

Naïve is using some of the new capital to develop infrastructure that it says can make those agent loops more efficient. It’s building a model router to send queries to the most efficient model for a task while preserving and replaying already reasoned data; a memory system that stores and surfaces business context as needed by agents to do their tasks; and an orchestrator for dividing work among agents.

Notably, Naïve is also building a serverless runtime that runs agents within lightweight JavaScript environments rather than assigning each one a complete virtual machine — an approach that lets customers pay primarily when an agent is active and makes it less expensive to deploy large numbers of agents.

While the autonomous company toolkit is in the most demand today, Dorje said optimizing inference costs is one of its fastest-growing sources of demand. “Part of running an autonomous company and running agents, like that’s your biggest cost line now, and so the highest growing demand right now, I would say is [for] inference and serverless agents,” he said.

He added that part of the business is getting interest from enterprises, though he did not name any.

That could prove to be a more valuable business than helping founders automatically set up phone numbers and corporate cards. Developers may initially use Naïve to deal with the tedium of setting up a company, but as they grow, they may care more about whether it can meaningfully reduce the recurring cost of operating a horde of agents. Enterprises with established businesses may find something to care about on that front, too.

Naïve currently has 10 full-time employees. Dorje said proceeds from the Series A will be used to hire researchers and develop the company’s four infrastructure projects: virtualized sandboxes for agents; model routing and inference optimization; a memory layer; and governance and orchestration.

Y Combinator, Zetta, Liquid 2 and angel investors including Gokul Rajaram, Apollo.io co-founder Tim Zheng, and former HubSpot COO JD Sherman also participated in the Series A. The funding brings the company’s total capital raised to roughly $32 million.

Google Wallet now lets parents set up secure balances for their kids
NEWS link
Google announced on Thursday that Google Wallet will now allow parents to set up a secure balance for children under 18. The tech giant says the new feature is designed to help parents teach healthy financial habits while maintaining oversight of their child’s spending through built-in safeguards.

Parents can set daily spending limits, review their child’s transaction history, and choose to receive notifications whenever a purchase is made. Parents can also lock or unlock the account if the child’s device is lost, or activate a temporary “spending timeout” to pause spending at any time.

The new feature brings Google Wallet more in line with competing financial tools, including Apple Cash Family, which lets parents send money to their children while monitoring transactions and managing spending controls.

Additionally, the company is positioning itself against startups like FamZoo and Greenlight, which allow parents to teach their children financial literacy through prepaid debit card systems.

Kids can use their Android device or Wear OS devices to tap and pay wherever Google Pay is accepted. The tech giant sees the new feature as a way for kids to manage their own money without the need for an actual bank account.

The update is rolling out in the United States. It’s unknown when, or if, Google plans to bring the new capability to additional regions.

The new feature builds on Google’s announcement last year that parents and guardians in select countries can allow their children to use digital payments on Android devices under parental supervision. A payment card can only be added with parental consent, and parents receive an email whenever their child makes a transaction.

With last year’s update, kids also gained the ability to use Google Wallet to access supported passes, like event tickets, library cards, and gift cards.

Gen Z dating apps like Ditto ditch swiping in favor of AI matchmaking
NEWS link
This generation of twentysomethings is so disillusioned with swipe-based dating apps that they’ll try literally anything else — even an AI matchmaker. After dropping out of UC Berkeley, Ditto co-founders Allen Wang and Eric Liu set out to build something that would help their peers connect without having to spend hours each week navigating the messiness of apps like Tinder and Hinge.

“As Gen Z ourselves, we were firsthand witnessing the behavioral shift in terms of how people are connecting with each other,” Wang told TechCrunch. “We see that people are getting super tired of all the endless swiping and endless small talk, and they’re really looking for something more genuine in real life.”

Instead of a typical app, college students can sign up for Ditto by texting a certain iMessage number, along with a code. Then an AI chatbot introduces itself as Ditto, “a dating initiative built by college students who get it … no swiping, no awkward DMs, just real dates every Wednesday at 7 pm.”

Users text their way through an onboarding process, starting with basic biographical information like their name, gender, and birth date. Then Ditto gets into more specific questions to understand someone’s personality, interests, and dating preferences. Some users even upload photos of their celebrity crushes to give the AI a sense of their type.

The Ditto algorithm tries to match people not based on similar hobbies and interests, but rather what those hobbies and interests say about who someone is.

“If there’s this guy, and he’s really into rock climbing, skydiving, and outdoor sports, and this girl, if she’s into hip hop, streetwear, and skateboarding, then even though those hobbies don’t look similar on the surface, I can tell you deeper down, both are very adventurous; maybe they’re very individualistic,” Wang said. “So that’s actually the core reason why people will find chemistry with each other, and so basically our claim is that chemistry is actually predictable with the right signals.”

Then, every Wednesday at 7 p.m., Ditto messages users with their match for the week.

“It comes with the person, it comes with a time, it comes with a location, and the users simply just need to show up and date each other and come back. We’ll collect more feedback about the date, and then improve our understanding of the user, and send them to a better next date,” Wang said. “Right now people’s goal is really just to go out there and meet each other, so it’s actually removing a lot of friction for our users, so that we are doing the heavy lifting for them, and they just simply go there and then meet whoever.”

Ditto has 150,000 signups, and Wang says that out of all the matches that are connected via Ditto, about 20% of those matches end up going out on a date. (If that percentage sounds low to you, then you’ve probably never used Tinder.)

Ditto creates a collage-like graphic to introduce users to one another and explain why they might be a good match — it’s a popular aesthetic among Gen Z that other connection apps with young founders like Sonder have gravitated toward.

With any dating app, and especially one that minimizes the time between matching and going out, it can be hard to discern the safety of a situation — is the person you’re meeting really who they say they are? For now, while Ditto is only available at a few dozen colleges, there’s a built-in vetting process in which you know that someone is a student at your university with a .edu email. Ditto is focused on figuring out how to grow to more schools — and eventually beyond just college — while scaling safely. Even for the most established and well-funded dating apps, this is a challenging endeavor. But Ditto does have $9.2 million in seed funding to work with from investors like Gradient, Peak XV, and Scribble.

Wang said, “99% of the investors just reached out to us through inbound, because we were pretty big on LinkedIn and Twitter for a bit. Even Duolingo’s co-founder Severin [Hacker] reached out to me saying, ‘Hey, love your mission, I really like what you do, let’s hop on a call.’”

Ditto has been able to establish this notoriety through its irreverent marketing, like videos of robot stunts. Now based in San Francisco, Ditto has 12 full-time employees, but they’re also hiring a “chief yacht officer” to throw promotional parties (yes, this is a legitimate job listing).

“Our users are college students, and they can smell corporate marketing from a mile away,” Wang said. “But the stunts are the top of the funnel, not the product … Viral moments get college kids to look; a good first date is what makes them stay.”

Tesla and SpaceX will invest $16.8B to start building ‘Terafab’ chip factory in Texas
NEWS link
Tesla and SpaceX said Thursday that “Terafab,” the advanced chip factory they are jointly developing, will be built in Grimes County, Texas, outside Houston, and that they will make an initial investment of $16.8 billion in the project.

The factory will be “the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far,” Elon Musk, CEO of both companies, wrote in a post on Thursday. More than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space is planned for the facility, according to SpaceX.

The companies say the facility will employ at least 3,000 people from Grimes and nearby Brazos County.

“The facility will be an advanced semiconductor fab that will bridge the divide between current global chip supply and the compute demand of the future,” a post on SpaceX’s website reads.

The animus behind Terafab is that Musk’s vision of the future — one where millions of robots take over human jobs, robotaxis do all the driving, and satellites become data centers for AI training and inference — requires a phenomenal amount of computing power, far more than what current production rates support.

SpaceX alone has suggested in filings that it may spend as much as $119 billion on the project across a “multi-phase” construction plan — although the company didn’t talk about Terafab at all on its first earnings call earlier this week.

Intel has said it will contribute to the Terafab project, although it’s been cagey about its exact contributions.

“Terafab will be epic in both its mission and in its sheer size, designed to build new compute at an unprecedented scale and speed. A vertically integrated factory with more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space is planned. This facility will house the manufacturing, packaging, and testing of advanced logic and memory devices,” SpaceX writes on its website.

“Bringing these aspects together in one location will enable fast, recursive improvements and accelerate new compute deployed. Terafab will produce chips optimized for edge computing and inference for use in hardware like Tesla’s Optimus robots and self-driving Cybercabs, along with high-power chips designed for operating SpaceX’s space-based data centers,” the company wrote.

SpaceX said in its post that it is “committing to the use of” water from the local Gibbons Creek Reservoir instead of local groundwater.

The announcement followed a heavily attended county meeting on Wednesday where hundreds of residents attended and raised concerns about millions of dollars in tax breaks awarded to the project, as well as a lack of transparency.

“We believe this agreement will strengthen our district, expand opportunities, and better prepare our students for their future,” Anderson-Shiro Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Sarah Borowicz said in a statement released by the Texas Governor’s office. “There are defining moments in the life of a school district, and this is one of those moments. Our commitment now is to ensure that every opportunity created through this agreement is managed wisely, transparently, and always with students at the center of every decision.”

OpenAI says Apple’s own security practices undermine its trade secrets case
NEWS link
OpenAI’s motion to dismiss Apple’s trade secrets lawsuit, along with newly filed exhibits, reveals the company’s legal defense strategy. Rather than focusing on whether former Apple employees working at OpenAI had accessed certain information, the AI company argues that Apple’s own security practices and offboarding procedures weaken its claim that the information qualifies as legally protected “trade secrets.”

Apple’s complaint, filed in July, accuses OpenAI of orchestrating a scheme to obtain confidential hardware information from former Apple engineers. This week, Apple asked the court to expedite discovery, saying its internal investigation indicates some additional former employees may have participated in, or witnessed, the alleged theft of trade secrets.

In its motion, OpenAI argues that Apple allowed employees to use personal iCloud accounts for work and failed to properly revoke access after they left the company. It also submitted text message records showing that an Apple manager remained logged into the personal iCloud account of defendant and former Apple engineer Chang Liu after he left the company to transfer files, and later asked him for help with technical questions about Apple projects.

OpenAI also accuses Apple of omitting the consequences of its own “inexplicable information-management practices” from its original complaint, noting that the company failed to properly secure its systems when employees departed, creating confusion and unwanted access issues that Apple now characterizes as theft.

While this may sound a bit like a “the door was unlocked, so it wasn’t really stealing!” defense, this argument is meant to strengthen OpenAI’s argument that former Apple employees were simply trying to assist their prior colleagues. It could also help push the narrative that these weren’t truly trade secrets if they weren’t secured as such.

OpenAI argues Apple hasn’t specified which “trade secrets” or confidential components were allegedly stolen, referring to them instead as “generic categories of the product-development process—such as component manufacturing, product testing, vendor and supplier relationships, and distribution channels.”

OpenAI’s filing posits that Apple is using this lawsuit to slow down its competitor from innovating in AI-powered hardware, rather than focusing on its own product plans.

“OpenAI has no use, need or desire for Apple’s trade secrets,” the motion argues. “OpenAI is building something entirely new and different from anything at Apple. OpenAI does have an interest in hiring the best engineers, inventors, developers and creators—many of whom have decided to leave Apple and to come to OpenAI, attracted by the innovative and exciting work the company is doing. Apple might not like that,” it reads.

“…Apple should not be permitted to use a baseless and pretextual lawsuit to make up for its

shortcomings in the market for talent and retaining its employees, and its failures to integrate AI into its products,” the motion says.

eBay continues to bet on live shopping after record quarter
NEWS link
As eBay tries to keep up with competitors like Whatnot and TikTok Shop, the online marketplace is making a bigger push into live shopping after seeing record results.

During its second-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, the company noted that eBay Live’s gross merchandise volume (GMV) jumped about eight times year-over-year across seven markets, along with increases in viewers, watch time, and items sold. It plans to expand eBay Live to more international markets in the coming weeks and months.

“These results reinforce our confidence that Live can deepen engagement, broaden discovery, and increase velocity across the broader eBay marketplace,” CEO Jamie Iannone told investors.

However, it’s important to note that eBay didn’t share the exact GMV number, making it difficult to assess how significant the growth is.

That said, eBay clearly sees Live as a key growth area, and the feedback from sellers and buyers looks promising. eBay reports that over 90% of sellers who stream regularly have seen their GMV grow, and those who use Live sell about three times more than those who don’t.

Buyers are also spending more. First-time shoppers in the collectibles category are dropping around 70% more than their non-Live shopping counterparts.

eBay launched Live as invite-only in the U.S. in 2022, then expanded internationally, starting with a beta in the U.K. in 2024, and it has since rolled it out in countries like Germany, Australia, France, Italy, and Canada.

Last month, the company moved past its invite-only model and now offers self-service onboarding for eligible sellers in over 300 categories, which include everything from electronics to fashion and collectibles.

The company also pointed to recent product improvements, including discovery features across its homepage and mobile app to make live events easier to find. Iannone added that eBay also simplified event creation, inventory preparation, and live item management for sellers, while improving “bidding responsiveness” to create smoother, faster livestreams.

The growth comes as live shopping in the U.S. moves beyond a niche trend, with more companies beginning to treat it more seriously rather than a side experiment. Even resale giant StockX recently introduced live shopping capabilities. Whatnot continues to find success, with a valuation of more than $11 billion. Additionally, TikTok Shop is reportedly testing a paid membership that offers free shipping and exclusive discounts.

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

(National Committee for the Administration of Gaza)。

NEWS link

Dior

Giorgio Armani Privé

Elie Saab

Tamara Ralph

NEWS link
