Prisoners who were freed under the government's last early release scheme are returning to jail at a rapid rate, prison governors have told the BBC.

They say they are seeing the same inmates, who were let out as part of the 2024 early release scheme to ease overcrowding, coming back after reoffending - including for breaching their conditions.

"The churn is what stresses me out," said one governor in the Midlands, describing it as a "revolving door".

It comes as Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced changes to the next early release scheme, starting in October, following outrage that the killers of PC Andrew Harper were among those eligible to be released.

On Sunday, Burnham announced that they will not be, telling the BBC that anyone convicted of unlawful killing will be excluded from the scheme.

He conceded that it means "hundreds" more people will stay in prison - as prisons in England and Wales reach breaking point at more than 97% full.

The government says there are plans to create more prison space by deporting foreign inmates and releasing some who are serving indefinite sentences, but they are unlikely to create much more space by the time the first batch of inmates are released in October.

BBC News spoke to three serving prison governors in England to gauge the state of correctional facilities and how staff are dealing with overcrowding. Prison staff are not supposed to speak to the media so their names and the prisons they govern will not be mentioned to protect their identity.

One governor from a prison in the north of England said the PM's plans to ease overcrowding "is all short-term solutions and we need space now".

"Providing additional cells in existing prisons will mean more prison staff needed to monitor that - it's not easy," they said, adding that staff shortages mean "prisoners are not living in a safe and decent environment".

The governor also said they were frustrated by the rate of prisoner recalls, saying: "We see the same people coming back after being released early and reoffending again, or breaking their [release] rules."

At least eight people have died and more than a dozen others are still missing after a passenger boat capsized off northern Cyprus, the head of the Turkish administration there has said.

Ünal Üstel, prime minister of the self-proclaimed Turkish republic on Cyprus, said the ferry had been carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members when it began taking on water after departing the coastal town of Kyrenia.

The ship's captain and seven crew members have been detained as part of an investigation into "how this tragedy occurred", Üstel wrote on social media.

A search and rescue operation to find the passengers still unaccounted for is under way, which Turkish authorities have joined.

The privately owned ferry left the popular holiday resort of Kyrenia at about 12:30 local time (09:30 GMT).

Üstel said the boat had been scheduled to travel to Turkey on Saturday, but had been delayed due to poor weather conditions.

He told Turkish media outlet TRT that the boat was hit by two waves before it capsized.

While the captain of the vessel was trying to recover from the first wave, a second wave hit and it began taking on water, he told the outlet.

Larak Island is just offshore from the key port of Bandar Abbas and sits right on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global shipping.

Iran is currently making tanker traffic pass by this island for checking and reportedly forcing vessels to pay $2m (£1.5m) to cross.

Hossein Mohebbi, the IRGC's spokesman called the attack a "strategic and fatal mistake by the Trump regime" and said that the "enemy will pay the consequences of this miscalculation in both the economic and military fields".

Iran's Tasnim news agency, which is affiliated with the IRGC, said earlier that the attack was carried out by drones. Reports indicate that two people were killed and two others injured, it said.

Trump ​said last week that all mines‌ placed in the Strait of Hormuz by Iran as part of its efforts to blockade the route had been detonated or removed. He said Iran had been warned that any ship ​or boat deploying new mines would be ​destroyed.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi described Trump's claim as a "propaganda" deception.

Iran is facing renewed economic pressure after Washington announced a fresh sanctions campaign on 24 August aimed at further isolating Tehran and expanding secondary sanctions against its allies.

Iranian officials and state media have largely dismissed the campaign as a continuation of previous US economic measures, which they argue followed Washington's military failure in the recent conflict.

The US and Israel launched wide-ranging strikes on Iran on 28 February, with Iran responding by attacking Israel, US bases and allied states in the Gulf, and effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz to marine traffic. The Iran war has now crossed its six-month mark.

Some 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas used to travel through before the war began.

The two sons of a police officer killed in a crash on Teesside led out the Manchester United team as mascots for Sunday's Premier League match against Ipswich at Old Trafford.

PC Matthew Blades, described as a "proud Red" by United, was a regular at Old Trafford.

The club paid tribute to him in Sunday's match programme, while his widow attended the game with their children.

PC Blades and his colleague PC Tom Clough died in a head-on collision between their police car and a vehicle going the wrong way on the A66 near Middlesbrough early on 22 August. Five people in the other vehicle also died.

United said they learned of the deaths of the two officers "with great sadness".

"Matthew was a proud Red, a devoted family man and a police officer who dedicated his life to helping others," said the club, in a tribute in the programme.

At Elland Road, match officials for Leeds United's Premier League fixture against Brentford on Sunday wore black armbands as referee Tony Harrington was a friend of PC Blades.

On Saturday, there was a minute's applause in memory of PC Blades and PC Clough before Middlesbrough's Championship encounter with West Brom at Riverside Stadium. Pictures of the two men were displayed on a screen.

People also gathered to pay tribute at Seaton Carew FC's game against FC Hartlepool. PC Blades had been a junior football coach at both teams.

Earlier this week, 17 people were arrested in connection with the investigation into the crash, bringing the total number of arrests to 24.

The occupants of the other vehicle, a Passat - Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jacob Matusiak, 23, Makai Saddington, 18, Theo Rae, 17, and Cole Robert Worthy, 17, also died.

Nasa says its "crisp, sweeping surveys will help scientists investigate dark energy and dark matter, discover and characterise exoplanets, map billions of galaxies, study black holes, and explore objects from our own solar system to the edge of the observable Universe."

Dark matter, which is invisible, acts as a kind of gravitational glue, while dark energy is believed to be a repulsive force driving the Universe's expansion. Together, they are thought to make up about 95% of the Universe.

"One of our main goals at Nasa is answering the question: are we alone in the Universe?" Fox said at a Sunday morning news conference.

"With Roman, we are going to make this giant leap forward... that is going to allow us to look at these distant, distant worlds and start to really resolve the atmosphere around them to let us know: could they be habitable?"

Millard said, through the work of telescopes like Roman, scientists are hoping to create "enormous cosmic maps" of the Universe at various stages.

"They'll be almost like an onion, so you can peel back layer upon layer... and see how the distribution of galaxies changes through cosmic time," she said.

"What we want to do is use this distribution to try and figure out dark matter and dark energy because we know they exist, we see their effects, but what they are is a real mystery."

Iceland has voted against resuming talks on joining the European Union 13 years after they were broken off.

Public broadcaster RUV reported that 52.8% of the more than 225,000 people who voted had rejected the government's proposal, while 47.2% had backed it. Some 12,600 votes separated them.

Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir's centre-left government promised to hold a referendum by 2027, but brought it forward because of international tensions, including US President Donald Trump's threats against Greenland.

However, debate in this island nation of almost 400,000 people centred more on its fishing industry rather than security concerns.

With some 270,000 people eligible to vote, RUV reported the turnout of 82.5% was the highest in any Icelandic election since 2009.

Already part of the EU's single market and Schengen border-free zone, full EU membership would bring Iceland into the customs union and eventually the eurozone currency union.

Iceland began its application to join the EU in 2009 in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis and the collapse of Iceland's banking system.

Its application was already well advanced when a eurosceptic government came to power in 2013 and put those talks on hold.

Fishing rights were the biggest obstacle to Icelandic accession then - as they remain today.

Iceland fought successfully to protect its fisheries from foreign fishermen during the Cod Wars with the UK in the 1970s - shortly after gaining independence from Denmark - and the country's fish and marine industries still account for almost 40% of its exports.

Many No voters feared EU membership would mean ceding some control of these lucrative fishing grounds under the bloc's policies, which control how much a member state can catch.

"The No side was much more skillful in sort of tapping into the political national identity in Iceland, which emphasises formal independence, coming out of a long independence struggle coming out of Denmark," Eirikur Bergmann, a professor of politics at Bifröst University, told the BBC.

"And so they were able to appeal to people's very fundamental feelings."

On the other hand, the Yes campaign "ran an overtly technical campaign, never really explaining the purpose or the passion in why Iceland join the EU", he said.

Seven people have been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a newborn baby girl in Sheffield, police said.

Officers were called at about 06:00 BST on Sunday to a property on Holywell Heights in the Wincobank area following reports of a concern for the safety of the baby.

South Yorkshire Police said, despite the best efforts of officers and paramedics, the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

Det Ch Insp Emma Knight confirmed the force was "working to determine the ages of some of those arrested".

She said: "We are aware news of this will be deeply concerning and I want to reassure our local communities that we have a dedicated team of detectives and officers hard at work to ensure justice is secured for the baby girl at the heart of this investigation."

Knight added: "Our investigation is in its early stages and we would like to remind people to avoid speculating about this incident."

Fans at the final day of Reading Festival were treated to a surprise set from singer Lola Young.

"I am backstage, the cat is out of the bag and I am going to be performing so see you... at the Grid stage," she teased on Instagram, before treating fans to hits including number one single Messy and One Thing.

Her performance marks the latest step in a return to the spotlight after she had to cancel a string of shows last year following an on-stage collapse in September.

Young also pulled out of the 2025 Reading festival due to a scheduling clash.

The weekend festival concludes on Sunday with a line-up including performances by drum and bass duo Chase & Status, and Florence + The Machine.

After Charli XCX ushered in her own new era with an electrifying set following her latest release Music, Fashion, Film, Young's return was welcomed by festival-goers in Reading on Sunday.

Young had cancelled her scheduled appearance at Reading Festival last year due to an "unavoidable scheduling conflict".

A month later, Young dropped her microphone, collapsed backwards and had to be helped off stage in front of a festival crowd in New York.

A few days later, she cancelled all shows "for the foreseeable future".

"I really hope you'll give me a second chance once I've had some time to work on myself and come back stronger," she posted in a message to fans at the time.

Young has sought treatment for drug dependency and told the Guardian, external in 2025 that addiction had dogged her for "a long time".

The pop star has since returned to performing with a small run of shows in the UK, starting with a London gig in March.

"It felt so right being back on stage," she wrote on social media shortly after, but said: "As tempting as it is to jump on a big tour I'm going to continue taking things slowly despite feeling so ready to perform more."

Before touching down in Reading, Young performed at the Electric Picnic Festival in the Republic of Ireland on Saturday.

Although she has returned to performing and released reflective single From Down Here in May this year, fans are still awaiting a fourth album.

Reading Festival winds down on Sunday night with a star-studded cast including indie icon Florence and the Machine, R&B hit-maker Loyle Carner, and Irish rap group Kneecap.

The festival's other site in Leeds, meanwhile, closes after performances from singer-songwriter Raye and multi award-winning rapper Dave on Sunday night.

Students and teachers initially moved a few hundred metres uphill to safety before making their way to a neighbouring village.

With roads cut off and transport disrupted, many remained stranded for two nights before rescue efforts reached them.

The principal and Yunisha, who both live across the river from the school, were eventually airlifted back to their home village.

Meanwhile parents were desperately trying to contact their children and relatives.

Yunisha's mother, Sabina Kumari Shrestha, says she repeatedly tried to call both her daughter and husband, but neither could be reached.

Her husband, Yubaraj Amatya, immediately headed towards the school.

"Soon after the flood news spread, I tried my daughter's number, but she was not reachable, then I was afraid," he said.

"Within a few minutes I rushed toward my daughter's school and Trishuli Bazar was all swept by the flood, then I thought my daughter was no more. I was so horrified, stopped my scooter, there was flooding but I could not think of returning without my daughter."

For nearly an hour, he had no idea whether she was alive and kept calling her without success. Then the phone finally connected and Yunisha answered.

"Finally, my daughter received my call and I couldn't stop myself, broke out... two relatives that were with me also cried and hugged me," he said.

Yunisha appears tearful as she recalls that moment.

"After I had reached the top of the hill, I received a call from my father. He was tearful and I could not speak a word then," she said.

Back home, her family waited anxiously for her return.

"Even my younger daughter couldn't sleep. But I felt so good to see her after three days (Friday), I am so happy and relieved," her mother said.

Yunisha says she is now thinking about what comes next.

"Now I am worried about my further studies," she said.

"If I had to change my school, I would have to miss my old friends and will face difficulties to make new friends. I am sad about my further studies."

Head teacher Dawadi says better warning systems, including sirens and evacuation alerts, could have helped residents respond sooner.

But he believes his decision to act immediately prevented a catastrophe.

"Had I decided to close the school after the period, nothing might be left, only the bell would be ringing at 9:30."

Searches for two crew members from a French fishing boat which sank in the English Channel have been suspended after a second day, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency has said.

A coastguard rescue helicopter, fixed-wing plane and RNLI lifeboats began searching an area south-west of Eddystone Lighthouse off Plymouth, Devon, after the five-strong crew of the trawler the Maranello made a distress call at 18:00 BST on Saturday.

The intensive multi-agency search continued on Sunday before it was "suspended pending further information", coastguards said at 20:20 on Sunday.

HM Coastguard said three people rescued from the boat and taken to hospital were "currently travelling back to France".

The French authorities said the stricken fishing vessel had contacted another trawler, the Stradale, to say it had a problem with its fishing gear.

The Stradale managed to recover three of the five crew members before the Maranello sank, the French naval prefecture for the Atlantic added.

One of the rescued sailors was evacuated by helicopter and treated in hospital in Truro, Cornwall, while the other two were taken to Plymouth for medical attention.

RNLI lifeboat crews from Falmouth and Newlyn in Cornwall, as well as from Plymouth and Salcombe in Devon, have been involved in the operation.

A large number of civilian vessels had also assisted in the "intensive search" for the two remaining crew members, a UK coastguard spokesperson added.

They said a coastguard aircraft "equipped with the latest technology including a multi-function search radar and high resolution cameras" was also involved, and that mayday relay broadcasts had been sent out, "requesting vessels in the area to keep a sharp lookout."

A woman who was critically injured when her car was in collision with a vehicle involved in a police pursuit has died.

The 62-year-old was the driver of a Ford Puma which collided with an Audi A3 on the A439 Warwick Road near Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire on Monday.

The driver of the Audi, a 19-year-old man, died at the scene. The Audi was being followed by police officers after it had earlier failed to pull over when requested to do so.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has begun an investigation and said thoughts were with the friends and families of both those who died. The families have requested privacy, a statement said.

"We can confirm that a woman who was critically injured in a road traffic incident in Warwick Road, Stratford-upon-Avon on Monday (24 Aug) has, sadly, died," the statement said.

"The 62-year-old woman's Ford Puma was in collision with a black Audi A3 car which had been pursued by officers from Warwickshire Police.

"The Audi driver died at the scene.

"Our thoughts are with the friends and families of both those who have died and both families have requested privacy at this difficult time."

Warwickshire Police was also contacted for a comment, but said it was directing inquiries to the IOPC. It has referred the crash to the police complaints watchdog because a death had occurred following police contact.

A rail passenger has told how she feels "lucky to be alive" after her train crashed with a van, killing the delivery driver.

Sophie Cassidy was travelling in the train when it hit a van on a railway line. The van driver died at the scene in Burscough, West Lancashire, just after 15:00 BST on Saturday.

The 26-year-old's daughter was hit by flying glass when the door to the Northern train driver's compartment sheered off its hinges in the crash on the Wigan Wallgate-Southport train.

The mother-of-two told the BBC: "I can't put into words how lucky we are to be alive. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around it all."

As Manchester United's home game with Ipswich Town drew to its conclusion, the skies went dark grey and the heavens opened.

Thunder and lightning accompanied a torrential downpour, followed by the obligatory pictures of rain pouring into the stadium through a leak in the roof.

It would have been a fitting visual metaphor for an awful afternoon for the Old Trafford hosts.

But this wasn't awful for United in the end, and for that a lot of credit must go to skipper Bruno Fernandes.

On a day when Marcus Rashford started his first Premier League game for the club since December 2024 and Kobbie Mainoo was also part of Michael Carrick's starting line-up, it was Fernandes who took centre stage.

A hat-trick in United's 5-2 win made the day all about him.

Joe Root is "not too concerned" about his recent modest returns with the bat, saying he has "14,000 runs for a reason".

Captain Root, England's all-time leading Test run-scorer, has passed 50 only twice this summer. An average of 29.44 is his second-lowest in a home season in a 14-year international career.

The 35-year-old has been lbw nine times in his past seven Tests, including on seven occasions this summer.

But Root pointed to the challenge faced by all batters against the moving ball in the UK this summer and his own remarkable Test career. Only India great Sachin Tendulkar has more than the Yorkshireman's 14,208 runs.

"I've played this game a long time and I've always found ways of solving those problems and working it through," Root told the BBC's Today at the Test. "I don't see this as being any different.

"There's a reason why I've got 14,000 runs and a reason why I've played the best part of 15 years at this level.

"Of course it's frustrating that there's sort of a trend. There are probably four umpires' calls within that, which could have gone the other way, and the ball is probably deviating more than it ever has.

"You try and be realistic and understand where everything's at, but also be aware of what you need to do to keep improving and keep getting better. I'm pretty sure I'll get through the other side. I'm not too concerned about that."

Last summer, former Australia opener David Warner took a dig at Root's prospects of success in the Ashes series that was to follow when he said: "He will have to take the surfboard off his front leg."

At the time, Warner's suggestion Root had an lbw problem was incorrect. In a run that began in August 2022 and ended with the fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne in December, Root was lbw to seam bowlers in Test cricket on only three occasions.

However, Root's recent run of leg-before dismissals began when he was trapped by Australia's Jhye Richardson in the second innings of the Boxing Day Test. Since then he has been lbw nine times in 12 innings, all to pace bowlers.

Root's specific problem has been against right-arm bowlers, pitching the ball outside off stump and nipping it back towards him.

Of the nine dismissals in his run of lbws, none have come at the hands of bowlers with high pace, rather those with a maximum speed of around 84mph.

"You're never given anything in this game," said Root. "You have to work for everything. You have to keep working hard and I'll certainly keep doing that.

"You're constantly going to get challenged and you're constantly going to have to look to evolve and learn, but that's never been something I've shied away from and I certainly won't be doing moving forward."

Root not only highlighted the difficulty of conditions, but also suggested batting is being made harder by what he perceived to be a different technique employed by ball manufacturers Dukes.

"The balls have been different this summer," he said. "I think there is a different lacquer. They were worried about it going out of shape. They are denting surfaces more."

When contacted by the BBC, Dukes denied any alteration to its process.

Root was backed to solve the lbw issue by former England captain Michael Vaughan, who said: "He's always overcome problems and I'm pretty sure he'll overcome this one.

"It is an issue because it's happening on a regular basis, but he's had issues in the past that he's managed to come back from. There's no question he'll be fine in time."

Ben Duckett - 4 - Another quiet Test for Duckett whose total of 18 runs across the match was only three more than at Headingley last week. Could do little about his first-innings dismissal but the way he hit a drive straight to mid-off in the second was really poor.

Emilio Gay - 5 - So unlucky to be the latest victim of the poor Lord's pitch after reaching 31 in the second innings. The third Test at Edgbaston could be a big week for the opener.

Jordan Cox - 7 - Very impressive again in making 55 in the first innings. As wickets fell around him, Cox remained composed. Yet to make a score that completely forces the selectors' hand but he is building a strong case to stay when Jacob Bethell is fit again.

Joe Root - 5 - Scores of four and 24 as England's captain fell lbw in both innings. Seven of his nine Test dismissals this summer have been in that fashion. It is not a crisis... yet…

Harry Brook - 6 - Nothing spectacular from Brook, who made 15 and 34, but he took a more restrained approach than in similar recent Tests when faced with difficult conditions.

Dan Lawrence - 7 - After being dropped and then run out in making 17 in the first innings, Lawrence responded with a useful 54 in the second that suggested he does have the skills for this role, with the bat at least.

Jamie Smith - 8 - His best performance for a year. Smith's 61 in difficult conditions in the first innings was perfectly played. Again, kept well up to the stumps to Ollie Robinson. His glovework has gone up a level.

Gus Atkinson - 5 - The one member of England's pace quartet who is struggling for wickets. Bowled quickly on day four but still only has one scalp in the series. His 45 with the bat in the first innings was handy.

Ollie Robinson - 9 - This is turning into Ollie Robinson's summer. After another eight wickets, England's seamer now has 23 wickets in three Tests at an average of 8.34 since his recall.

Jofra Archer - 8 - Brilliant in the first innings when he was unfortunate to finish with just the three wickets. His bouncer to dismiss Babar Azam on day four was a throwback of Archer's fearsome debut on the same ground.

Josh Tongue - 7 - Pakistan did not recover after Tongue took the key wickets of Babar Azam and Abdullah Shafique in the first innings. Also improved his Test high score to 30 not out.

At times it felt like there was a certain inevitability about Scottie Scheffler collecting his second Fedex Cup title on Sunday.

As those around him began to falter, the world number one, who started the day three strokes adrift of overnight leader Viktor Hovland, produced a typically metronomic performance with the winning cheque in sight.

And what a prize. Scheffler's reward for his 22nd career victory at the PGA Tour's season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta will see his bank account credited to the tune of $10m (£7.4m).

The 2024 champion also joins Tiger Woods (2007 and 2009) and Rory McIlroy (2016, 2019 and 2022) to have won the event on multiple occasions.

"To come from behind and be able to win tournament is a really cool feeling," Scheffler said.

"There were a lot of talented guys in front of me on the leaderboard. I was fortunate to get off to a good start and put myself in the mix. It's a gift to be out here on tour. Each and every day I'm going to try to give it my best."

Across the final three pairings, Scheffler's four-under 66 was the only round to break par with his superb ability to find green after green giving him a substantial edge over his rivals.

Hovland, whose driving became more erratic, also found that his putter had gone cold when he most needed it, and the Norwegian signed for a two-over 72 as he finished three back in second place.

McIlroy was unable to rediscover the rhythm that rocketed him into contention on Saturday, with his topsy-turvy round of 69 containing four birdies and an eagle mixed with five bogeys.

It earned the 27-year-old a tie for fourth on his debut to cap a remarkable season in which he won his first DP World Tour event at the Indian Open before teaming up with his elder brother, the 2022 US Open champion Matt, to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans pairs event.

Tommy Fleetwood, who famously triumphed 12 months ago began the day too far off the pace for his three-under 67, to trouble the likes of Scheffler and ended in a tie for 11th at 10 under overall.

The UK Foreign Office says it has raised the detention of a British national in the occupied West Bank with Israeli authorities.

Finn Joughin, a 22-year-old student activist, was arrested in Umm Al-Kheir on Saturday after he was forcibly detained by Israeli settlers who had advanced on the Palestinian village.

There has been a surge in attacks by settlers on Palestinians and their property in the West Bank since the start of the Gaza war, which was triggered by the Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023.

All settlements are illegal under international law. Outposts are also illegal under Israeli law, although they are often supported by state services and funding.

The confrontation on Saturday took place in a town near Hebron that has been recently surrounded by settlers.

According to other activists who witnessed what happened, Palestinian children were playing football when children from settler families started intervening. They then ran to a house and started to dismantle a fence.

Footage posted online by both settlers and activists and seen by the BBC appears to show Joughin standing by the fence and trying to protect it using his body as a child pushes against him.

Settlers removed Joughin forcefully and took the London-based student to an outpost.

Israeli police said a foreign national was detained by security personnel of a settler community who suspected him of an indecent act against a minor.

In a later statement on Sunday, they said: "The suspect was transferred to the police for questioning, which included, among other things, taking statements that raised suspicion of an assault against a minor.

"Following his questioning, the suspect was taken into custody, and the investigation into the incident remains ongoing."

However, Joughin's family told the BBC he was due to be deported from Israel on Monday.

Activists who were with Joughin at the time deny there was any inappropriate behaviour.

"In every single instance, it was the settler kids who approached Finn," fellow activist Matthew, who declined to give his surname, told the BBC.

Toddling past me is surely one of Notting Hill Carnival's youngest visitors. Triny-Savannah is just 18 months old, and is here with her mum Twinsy, all the way from Paris.

"It means a lot to be here," Twinsy says. She explains that her parents used to bring her and her twin sister, and now she's carrying on the tradition with the next generation.

"It's the celebration of the abolition of slaves, so it's a big day of memories," Twinsy says.

Sitting on the pavement nearby I spot eight-year-old Alex and his mum, Tiana. I soon find out it's Alex's first Carnival.

He has the biggest smile on his face and a water pistol loaded with paint.

"I haven't been for a long time," Tiana, from Enfield, explains, "but when I was younger I used to come religiously every year and it's nice to come back with Alex."

I ask Alex how he feels about the whole morning, and he says: "I love it. It's really busy, but then it's also like we're all together at the same time, so that's great."

Just five hours after having his much-anticipated signing confirmed by Chelsea, Emiliano Martinez was walking out at Stamford Bridge to play for his new team against Brighton.

Ex-Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given, who is a pundit on Sunday's Match of the Day, described Martinez as a "brilliant signing".

"Martinez is interesting," Given told BBC Sport. "He's only just signed but Alonso's thought 'I'm not messing about, I'm getting him straight in the team'. The manager clearly thinks he needs someone of that sort of stature."

It was, ultimately, victory in chaos, but Alonso will need to find a way to control matches if Chelsea are to become title challengers, with a trip to Arsenal next.
