Man killed by falling tree as Storm Boelo leaves 160,000 properties without power
NEWS link
A 60-year-old man has died after being hit by a falling tree in southern Scotland as Storm Boelo continues to bring severe weather to the UK.

Police Scotland said the man was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident near Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway at about 10:30 on Sunday.

The harsh weather battering the UK had left 161,400 properties without power as of 15:00 GMT on Sunday afternoon, the Energy Networks Association (ENA) said.

Those still without electricity have faced delays as the dangerous conditions were "limiting network engineers' opportunities to safely start the work", the ENA added.

Serbia's veteran ruler Vučić concedes election to student-led protest movement
NEWS link
Serbia's long-standing leader Aleksandar Vučić has admitted defeat to the student-led protest movement in snap parliamentary elections.

"We still do not have final results... it is clear that we have lost these elections," the right-wing populist leader said as he conceded late on Sunday.

Preliminary figures provided by Serbia's election commission indicated a record high turnout, which commentators had suggested would favour the student movement.

Vučić had called the snap elections after two years of protests triggered by the 2024 collapse of a train station canopy in the city of Novi Sad, which killed 16 and was seen as emblematic of corruption and negligence in Serbia.

Vučić had spent two terms as president and could not seek a third term, so was leading his party with the aim of returning to the post of prime minister, which he left in 2017.

The Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said he would welcome an "honest discussion" about the prospect of returning to free movement between the UK and European Union. In an interview with the Sunday Times political editor Ben Riley-Smith, he said a new relationship with Brussels could also include full EU membership or joining the single market. Funding set to double for plan to get rough sleepers off streets by Christmas
NEWS link
Funding is set to double to support a pledge by the prime minister to give every rough sleeper in England a route off the streets by Christmas.

Ending rough sleeping was one of Andy Burnham's first promises when he entered Downing Street, announcing a £442m package to provide emergency accommodation and practical support.

On the eve of the first Rough Sleeping Summit at Downing Street on Monday, No 10 has indicated a further £432m will be added to the initiative in Wednesday's Budget.

Shadow housing secretary Katie Lam said rough sleeping had hit "record highs under Labour" and criticised Burnham for failing to end rough sleeping when he was the Mayor of Greater Manchester.

The BBC understands the government's commitment is that every rough sleeper will be able to physically move into accommodation by Christmas and/or they will be offered support as a way to prevent them sleeping rough.

Some people may choose not to accept accommodation, but ministers say support will still be offered to them.

The government said initial funding had seen specialist outreach teams and new bed spaces operating in Coventry, with further provision being rolled out in places including Plymouth and Camden in north London over the coming weeks.

Money being added to the pot this week will extend support beyond March 2027 to the end of this Parliament, taking total investment to £874m.

Ahead of hosting the summit, Burnham said: "Rough sleeping isn't a fact of life. It's a thing governments either choose to accept or don't.

"Well I don't accept it. That's why we're doubling funding so that people aren't just offered a safe route off the streets this winter but have that same support right through the rest of this Parliament too.

"But we can't do it alone. If we're going to end rough sleeping, we need every part of society behind us on this. So today we're bringing together businesses, charities and local leaders in Downing Street to make sure this is a solution that lasts."

More than 30 organisations have pledged support for the plan with new partnerships, including commercial businesses and charities.

Letter making claims about Meghan's father written by his ex-wife, BBC understands
NEWS link
A letter sent to the Metropolitan Police making a number of claims relating to the Duchess of Sussex's father was written by his ex-wife Roslyn Loveless, the BBC understands.

Meghan confirmed on Friday she had previously been informed about "disturbing allegations" about her estranged father, Thomas Markle.

On Saturday, the Met confirmed it received a letter relating to Markle in 2019, and it was shared with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the time.

It has been reported that images of child sexual abuse allegedly belonging to Markle, 82, had been found in his former home in the Philippines. Markle, who is based in the US, denies all such allegations.

Loveless, who has since died, is the mother of Meghan's half-siblings Samantha Markle and Thomas Markle Jr. Loveless divorced Markle in 1975 before he married the Duchess' mother Doria Ragland in 1979.

Meghan was born in 1981 and is the only daughter of Markle and Ragland.

In a statement shared on Friday, Meghan confirmed the existence of the letter and wrote: "I am deeply distressed... my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed."

She said she hoped it could be understood why she had largely cut off contact from her father and did "not allow him to have contact with our children".

Meghan has been estranged from her father since 2018. The BBC understands she broke contact with him last year, telling him she and the authorities knew he had abused young girls.

Sources close to the duchess said Meghan warned Markle in a letter - sent while he was in hospital in the Philippines after having his leg amputated - that he would never meet his grandchildren.

Manchester United & Michael Carrick: Air of inevitability around manager's future but owners' problems far bigger
NEWS link
There was an air of inevitability about Michael Carrick's walk around Old Trafford after the 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth.

It is not unusual for Carrick to applaud the United fans. If anything, his acknowledgements were not as pronounced as they were in Como after the equally devastating loss.

But after eight games without a win, the worst run since 2015-16 and two horrific defeats in a week, the end is approaching for the United boss.

However, if anyone in a senior position at the club thinks the issues at Old Trafford will be solved simply by changing the head coach and, more importantly, the fans will be appeased by a new face in the dugout, the reaction from the stands on an awful day on and off the pitch would have very clearly told them otherwise.

On Friday, as he looked back on that 4-1 loss to Como and looked ahead to Bournemouth, Carrick said: "We'll be a different team on Sunday. We have to be a different team on Sunday."

Sadly, they weren't.

Carrick could not answer if he will still be in charge for next Saturday's trip to Chelsea. He does not know.

"The responsibility is mine," he said. "What else can I say really right now? I totally understand the situation. I'm not expecting anything either way. I love this place and I'll always do what I feel is going to be the best for the football club."

Deeply divided Israel braces for pivotal election
NEWS link
The prime minister has traditionally relied on a stable base of right-wing voters, but is projected to see a thinning of support in this election. Some voters may be slipping away to opposition parties like Eisenkot's. Others, including some die-hard Likud voters we spoke to, said the 7 October attacks had pushed them towards parties further on the right.

Lt Col (Res) Eyal Hajbi, head of the regional civil defence unit in the Netanyahu stronghold of Sderot, right on the Gaza border, lost several friends and colleagues in the attacks. He lights candles for them every day in his office, and told me he would be thinking about them when he cast his ballot on Tuesday.

Standing on a ridge overlooking the ruins of northern Gaza, he gestured to the wasteland where Israel's army has completely flattened the neighbourhoods of Beit Lahia and Beit Hanoun.

"As far as I'm concerned, after 7 October, we should wipe them all out," he said. "I've changed my understanding of Gaza. Before, I wouldn't have said we should destroy it."

He told me he and his family had always voted Likud, but that now he was voting for the far-right party of Itamar Ben Gvir, Jewish Power.

"My family has become more extreme than it ever was before," he said. "If once we deliberated over it, today we don't think twice; we vote."

Polls suggest that less than 10% of Israelis are undecided and that very few of those are considering switching between government parties and opposition ones.

Ben Gvir, National Security minister in Netanyahu's coalition, has been reaching out to younger voters through headline-grabbing social media campaigns.

A poll for one of Israel's leading newspapers, Yedioth Ahronoth, published on 9 October, suggested that more than 16% of first-time voters in Israel would choose far-right parties like his.

In Sderot, a group of 18 year olds from a nearby Jewish religious college told me their political views had been affected by the 7 October attacks far more than their parents. All four teenagers were planning to vote for another far-right party, Religious Zionism, led by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.

"Today, the whole younger generation understands that peaceful paths will not work," Aviad Elmahach, one of the teenagers, told me. "Older adults, who are set in a fixed mindset, find [it] harder to change, but the youth understand that we need to be here with strength and an iron fist, which is the only way to win."

The lesson of 7 October, he said, was that Israel needed to be as forceful as possible in its relations with the Palestinians, more than 74,000 of whom have been killed by Israel in Gaza since then, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, whose figures are considered reliable by the UN.

"The youth have a fresh new perspective that has not yet become entrenched in politics, and they understand very well why we're voting for Smotrich - it means holding the land with strength and giving [the Palestinians] nothing through peaceful gestures."

Opposition leader María Machado returns to Venezuela
NEWS link
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has returned home to a fraught political landscape after more than 10 months in exile.

"I am here. With you," Machado wrote on X on Sunday. Her return comes after repeated prior efforts to re-enter the country came to no avail.

In January, a month after Machado left Venezuela on a speedboat under cover of darkness to accept the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway, the US seized her opponent, President Nicolás Maduro.

The Trump administration then backed his deputy, Delcy Rodríguez, as leader and she was sworn in as interim president, later signing an oil deal which granted very favourable terms to the US.

Machado was photographed on Sunday attending Mass at a church in the Venezuelan state of Lara, surrounded by supporters hugging her and clasping her hands.

Her ally, former presidential candidate Edmundo González, confirmed her arrival, writing in a statement: "I am thrilled to announce to you that our leader, my dear María Corina, is on Venezuelan soil."

"Today is a very important day for Venezuelans. Our sovereign voice returns with her to lead and guide this process!" González said.

He added that he will soon join Machado in Venezuela to advance the country "toward freedom".

An advisor to Machado said in September that over the previous few weeks Machado had attempted seven times to return to Venezuela, but was denied each time. There have been reports that the US was involved in delaying her return, which it has denied.

It's unclear what Machado plans to do next now that she's back, but she has previously said she would run for president again if an election were held. Her ability to return to her country was always contingent on approval from the Trump administration, which it appears has now been granted.

Board of Deputies of British Jews declares Greens to be racist party
NEWS link
The Green Party of England and Wales has been declared a racist organisation by the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

The Jewish body, which is the largest in the UK, was responding to the "Zionism is racism" policy motion passed at the Green Party's conference earlier this month.

Board of Deputies president Phil Rosenberg said a vote passed by 118 votes to one to declare that the Greens had, "by adopting an antisemitic platform, become a racist party".

A spokesman for the Greens insisted the party does not discriminate against people who hold Zionist views and said it rejected the Board of Deputies' "characterisation of this motion and our party".

They added the decision "will not stop us from speaking out against the genocide in Gaza and pushing for stronger sanctions against the Israeli government and its leaders". Israel has repeatedly denied its actions in Gaza amount to genocide.

The motion passed by the Board of Deputies urged other parties not to do deals with the Greens unless they rejected the policy.

Forming coalition deals with Greens at local or national level would be "failing to take antisemitism with the requisite seriousness", it said, unless the party's local leadership have rejected the policy and committed to overturn it.

Labour has already issued an ultimatum to local Green groups it is currently in coalition with, telling them to disown the motion or lose the party's support.

Rosenberg said: "By adopting an antisemitic platform, the Green Party of England and Wales has become a racist party. We will treat it accordingly.

"No political party has the right to tell Jews that a central part of our identity, rooted in thousands of years of history, faith and peoplehood, is racist.

"The Green Party's policy brands much of our community, including our synagogues and communal organisations, with that slur. It gives prejudice against Jews a political licence.

"The Green Party's leadership must now take responsibility for reversing this policy and confronting the antisemitism it has legitimised."

The motion backed by Green members at its party conference earlier this month said Zionism was an ideology supporting "an ethnonationalist Jewish state in historic Palestine to the exclusion and/ or domination of the non-Jewish population".

It was criticised by Jewish groups, as well as four Green MPs and two former leaders, and opposition political parties.

Responding when the Green motion was passed, the Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council said in a joint statement that "Zionism is anti-racism, creating a refuge for Jews in their ancient homeland after millennia of persecution outside it".

Green Party leader Zack Polanski, who is Jewish, did not take part in the vote on the motion as he left the conference early to campaign in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election which was held days later.

He has since told the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg that, while he would like to make amendments, he would not overturn the motion, which would be party policy until 2028.

US Grand Prix result: Kimi Antonelli wins in Austin but has to wait to seal title
NEWS link
Kimi Antonelli just missed out on clinching his first world title in a dominant victory in the United States Grand Prix.

The 20-year-old Italian leads Mercedes team-mate George Russell by 123 points after coming home ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

Antonelli will be crowned champion in Mexico City next weekend as long he does not lose more than 23 points to Russell and 24 to Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton.

That means a ninth place would be enough to become champion even if Russell wins the race, and a 10th would be enough if Hamilton is victorious.

If Russell or Hamilton do not win, Antonelli will be champion next Sunday no matter where he finishes.

Antonelli stamped his authority on this race in the same way as he has on the season, and was out of touch even by the first corner as his rivals all battled behind him.

The key stories of the race were:

Antonelli's sublime victory, his first since the Spanish Grand Prix last month

A race-long squabble between Leclerc and Verstappen for second place

Little else, frankly

Antonelli took control of the race from the very beginning, an excellent start combined with a gripping scrap through the first lap between Verstappen and Leclerc leaving him more than two seconds clear by the end of the first lap.

No-one got near him from then on.

Mercedes had chosen the medium tyres for the start, while Leclerc and the Red Bulls of Verstappen and Isack Hadjar started on new softs.

And Antonelli was able to convert that choice into a one-stop race while everyone else did two, emphasising his superiority as he finished 16 seconds clear of Leclerc.

The race was also a stamp of approval for the Mercedes upgrade package that was introduced two races ago in Malaysia but initially took them backwards.

Assiduous work ever since has moved it to the point where, while it remains tricky to optimise, it is definitively quicker than the older specification.

"It was the result we needed," Antonelli said. "All this time putting work on the new package and finally seeing the result was very pleasant, perfect strategy to call the one-stop."

As for the title, he said: "I know we are very close. We try to finish on a high and hopefully we can clinch it very soon."

Death toll in Nigeria village raided by gunmen rises to 48, police say
NEWS link
The death toll from Friday's attack on a remote village in the north-eastern Nigerian state of Taraba has risen to at least 48, police have told the BBC.

The police had initially reported 10 deaths after unidentified gunmen on motorcycles raided the village of Binnari, looting shops and setting houses ablaze.

More bodies were discovered on Sunday, according to state police spokesperson Victor Mshelizah, who said some of the victims had drowned while trying to escape the attackers while others were killed in nearby bushes.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International's director for Nigeria said his organisation had confirmed 52 deaths, citing sources on the ground and members of the local community.

The attack happened just after midday Muslim prayers, and the rampage went on for up to four hours.

State police had initially recovered 10 bodies with gunshot wounds after officers responded to a distress call.

The attackers had fled by the time officers arrived - but they continued to patrol the area to restore calm, Taraba's police told the BBC on Saturday.

"We were able to disperse the unknown gunmen though there was no casualty on their side and ours because the terrain is difficult and they're used to the terrain," Assistant Superintendent of Police Victor Mshelizah said.

Community leader Malam Abubakar Saifullahi told news agency AFP that the attackers had arrived on about 50 motorcycles, two men apiece.

"They looted shops and took cash, foodstuffs and other provisions," he said. "They also took motorcycles abandoned by people fleeing the attack."

Isiyaku Musa, who survived the attack, told AFP: "People were running in different directions to escape the attack. Nobody knew where it was safe to go."

Amnesty's Nigeria director Isa Sanusi has called for an impartial investigation into the killings, accusing the authorities of leaving rural communities "at the mercy of gunmen that are repeatedly commit atrocities with impunity".

Parts of north-eastern Nigeria have been affected by years of violence involving jihadist groups and armed gangs, which raid communities, abduct residents and demand ransoms.

Similar armed groups operate in the country's north-west and central regions.

The latest attack comes as Nigeria prepares for elections next year, with insecurity expected to feature prominently in political debates.

Moscow to host 2030 World Weightlifting Championships
NEWS link
Moscow will host the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships - the first time an Olympic federation has chosen to stage a global event in Russia since the country's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced its decision on Sunday, four months after confirming Russian athletes would again be eligible to compete in its events.

In July, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) provisionally lifted a suspension on the Russian Olympic Committee.

That suspension had been imposed following the country's invasion of Ukraine.

The IOC's subsequent decision potentially opened the way for Russian athletes to compete for their country at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The IWF announced the host cities of four world championships at junior, youth and senior levels, awarding the 2029 senior event to Ahmedabad in India.

"All the bids we received were excellent and we are sure that the championships in your respective countries will be a huge success," said IWF general secretary Jose Quinones.

No world championships in an Olympic sport, summer or winter, have been held in Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine.

The 2025 World Aquatics Championships, initially awarded to the Russian city of Kazan, were instead moved to Singapore.

Moscow has not held the World Weightlifting Championships since 1983.

The Russian Weightlifting Federation said: "[We are] the first Olympic sports federation to succeed in bringing a top-level official competition back to the country in many years."

Federation president Aleksandr Vinokurov thanked the IWF in a post on Telegram "for their trust", with the championships also serving as a qualifying event for the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane, Australia.

"Russia has all the necessary experience and capabilities to host competitions of the highest level," he said.

"Moscow has repeatedly staged major international sporting events and has modern infrastructure."

In announcing its decision in July to provisionally lift Russia's suspension, the IOC said that no decision had been taken on whether Russia could display their flag, colours and anthem at the Olympic ‌Games.

The IOC said it would continue to "not organise IOC events in Russia or invite Russian government or state officials to its events".

Some Russian athletes competed at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and this year's Winter Olympics in Milan as neutrals.

Ukraine filed an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) requesting that the IOC decision to lift its suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee be annulled.

The IOC's move decision came after the International Paralympic Committee had already ended Russia's exile from global sports events, with the country's athletes allowed to compete under their national flag at the Winter Paralympics.

Five Ukrainian athletes are listed to compete in the 2026 IWF World Championships in Ningbo, China, which are scheduled to take place from 27 October to 8 November.

Long queues after power surge at Stansted Airport
NEWS link
Passengers arriving at Stansted Airport have described waiting in long queues to reach immigration control after a power surge shut down its systems.

Traveller Jill Stakem reported the airport's internal tram system had failed earlier and people were "being held in a corridor for over 90 minutes".

Stakem added: "It's horrendous. No communication, no seating for people, no-one offering watering."

In a statement, a spokesperson for Stansted Airport said: "Due to a power surge earlier today that affected the airport and local area, a number of airport systems were temporarily impacted."

They added: "All systems are now back in service with operational teams working hard to provide support to passengers on their journeys through the airport."

Another airport spokesperson confirmed the shuttle service "remained out-of-service due to a technical fault and contingency bussing is in operation to transfer passengers between the terminal and gates".

Suspect in deadly Paris suburb shooting sent for psychiatric observation
NEWS link
The lawyer for Pengo Bossio Wangi, the one person killed during the attack, told French media the move to place the suspect under observation was "very rare".

He alleged that it was being used to portray the suspect as criminally irresponsible rather than having acted deliberately.

Wangi, a 26-year-old French-Congolese martial artist, was named as the one fatality on Saturday.

The mixed martial arts club where he trained paid tribute to him, saying: "On the mats as off them, he was one of those who lead by example: present, respectful, always ready to lift others up.

"His smile, his energy and his generosity will remain etched in our walls and in our hearts."

Three of those injured in the attack were taken to hospital in a serious condition - including a 12-year-old girl who remains in a critical condition.

The mayor of La Verrière, Nicolas Dainville, told French radio network France Info on Sunday that he had spoken to the girl's mother over the phone and confirmed she was "doing better".

Another injured resident was recovering while a third remained in a critical condition, he said.

The suspect had been known to police prior to the attack but not to France's intelligence services, local media report. PNAT previously said he had four previous convictions that had been "automatically expunged".

He is thought to have used an old semi-automatic weapon during the attack, firing in bursts from his car window.

Liverpool beat Brighton: Alexander Isak living up to price tag as Liverpool's winning run continues
NEWS link
It has been a long time coming but Alexander Isak might finally be living up to his price tag.

The Sweden striker arrived at Anfield amid huge fanfare in August 2025 when he signed from Newcastle for a British record £125m.

But a combination of a slow start and then suffering a broken leg in December meant his first season at the Reds became something of a nightmare - scoring just four goals in 22 games.

This season has been a different story. Isak's goal against Brighton on Sunday helped Liverpool to an impressive 2-0 win against the Premier League's in-form side, taking his tally to six for the campaign already.

The 27-year-old is averaging almost a goal per game and has scored more than half of Liverpool's Premier League goals this season.

Like last weekend at Brentford, Isak didn't necessarily set the game alight, but again it was another crucial goal from the Swede. His strike gave Liverpool breathing space against a Brighton team that had 64% possession and actually ended the game with a higher xG than Andoni Iraola's side.

In the end, Liverpool saw the game out and this was arguably their finest display in the league under Iraola, who secured his first league win at Anfield at the fourth time of asking.

Only Erling Haaland (nine) has scored more Premier League goals this season than Isak and when Liverpool signed him from Newcastle these were the numbers they expected.

During Isak's struggles in an injury-plagued campaign in 2025-26, the belief inside the club was that this was a long-term signing and any judgement would be reserved for when he was fully fit. Judging by recent performances, that patience is proving to be warranted.

"Today, the performance was really good against a really good team," Isak said.

"The first half is really what we want to be about - winning balls and the intensity."

The exciting thing for Iraola and Liverpool is that Isak is nowhere near his best yet, and that should be a cause of worry for the rest of the top flight. It is Arsenal next up in the league.

"Alex [Isak] is threatening, especially if we can get him in those positions and we can provide him good crosses. In this case, it's a matter of Bradley [Barcola] winning the duel and being faster than the opposition to get us in that position," said Iraola.

Pakistan vs England: Shadab Khan condemns Harry Brook's side to another improbable loss
NEWS link
One-day international tri-series, Lahore

England 241 (46.4 overs): Duckett 105 (111), Shaheen 4-46

Pakistan 243-9 (47.1 overs): Shadab 113* (96), Overton 3-43

Pakistan won by one wicket

Scorecard

England somehow lost another one-day international from a seemingly unbeatable position thanks to an improbable last-wicket stand by Pakistan in Lahore.

Three days after conceding 430 to lose to Sri Lanka, Harry Brook's side were beaten despite reducing Pakistan to 154-9 in pursuit of 242.

Shadab Khan was the engineer of Pakistan's unlikely win, striking a quite brilliant unbeaten 113 - the highest score by a number eight in an ODI.

He was supported by Haris Rauf, Pakistan's number 11 contributing seven to the unbroken 10th-wicket partnership of 89 - comfortably a new record for a last-wicket pair to win an ODI.

In barely believable scenes, Shadab was given out lbw to Gus Atkinson on 97, with 21 runs still required.

The players shook hands before Shadab called for a speculative review. DRS found a tiny inside edge and, reprieved, he watched Rauf belt debutant Henry Crocombe down the ground for the winning boundary with 17 balls to spare.

It means England are all but out of the tri-series - their exit will be confirmed if Sri Lanka beat Pakistan on Tuesday.

A second implosion in as many matches is hugely concerning for England, who looked to be on course for victory despite being bowled out for only 241.

Ben Duckett made a fine 105 - only the opener, Sam Curran and Gus Atkinson passing 20 in blameless conditions.

Nevertheless, England were well on course thanks to a collectively relentless display from their bowlers. Jamie Overton bowled his 10 overs in one spell for 3-43.

Then came Shadab and another baffling defeat for England, who could be out before they play their final game against Sri Lanka on Thursday.

What have Manchester United changed to turn around their WSL form?
NEWS link
Perhaps the biggest changes at United have been off the pitch.

Olid explained that her side had navigated a "transitional period" and had taken part in big discussions following their five-goal home humbling by Chelsea.

Players needed to find confidence and Olid said talks had to bring a solution.

"It has been a lot of hard work to change that, and a lot of honest conversations about what we could do and how we could connect," said Olid on Sunday.

"Sometimes you need a difficult moment to react and see where the problems were [that] we had to solve as a team. It had to happen, to be the team we are now."

The team's form at the start of the season had an impact on individuals.

United vice-captain Ella Toone missed out on England selection for the first time under Sarina Wiegman - albeit she was later summoned as a squad reinforcement.

Toone responded at club level by scoring in United's 3-1 win at Charlton in mid October.

Summer signing Andrea Medina has grown to become a crucial member of the United squad, and the international break proved to be a valuable time for Olid to adjust to her new role, reflect on what needed to change and to spend time on the training pitch.

England defender and United captain Maya le Tissier was among those to return with renewed energy having impressed for her country during the break.

The backroom staff positions were also confirmed and Olid has been able to build a group she hopes can lead United to success going forward.

Fellow Spaniard Jose Herrera joined as assistant coach, alongside Gavin Beith, who worked with Olid at former club Hearts.

Speaking about the international break, Olid said: "I had time to re-organise everything, the roles for the new staff and how we are going to work together.

"This break, for me, was amazing. It was like a new start. It was about keeping the good energy from the last matches but then having a new start."

Now they have proven they can compete with the WSL's best, Olid hopes United can push on and build on their draw with City.

"We need to have our feet on the floor. This season is long and with really good teams. We need to keep improving and learning," Olid said on Sunday.

"If we have the desire and fight we had today, not a lot of things can stop us. We still need to keep improving, but today I could see moments."

Two men killed by falling trees as Storm Boelo leaves 160,000 properties without power
NEWS link
The Metropolitan Police were called to Dollis Road in Finchley at around 12:40 GMT to reports a tree had fallen onto a moving car, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chief Inspector Guy Ellwood, from the North West Command Unit, said: "This is a deeply tragic incident and our thoughts are with the loved ones of the young man who lost his life."

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said it sent incident response officers, paramedics from its hazardous area response team, and a trauma team from London's Air Ambulance to the scene.

Earlier, Police Scotland said a man died after being hit by a falling tree in southern near Castle Douglas.

During Storm Boelo and the earlier Storm Austen, which hit the UK on Friday, 838,700 properties across the country faced power cuts, according to the ENA.

Wind gusts peaked on Sunday morning at 85mph in Machrihanish, in Argyll and Bute, and 84mph in both Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides, and Capel Curig in north Wales.

An amber wind warning issued by the Met Office was in place until 21:00 on Sunday across Scotland and parts of northern England.

A yellow warning that also covered other areas of the north of England, including Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, as well as parts of the East and West Midlands and North Wales, also expired at 21:00.

The Met Office urged people to "stay indoors as much as possible", adding: "If you do go out, try not to walk, or shelter, close to buildings and trees."

The strongest gusts have continued to spread eastwards across the UK on Sunday.

Spotify uploads Irish lyrics for Dolly Parton's Welsh Jolene version
NEWS link
The lyrics to Dolly Parton's Welsh version of her hit Jolene were uploaded mistakenly to Spotify in Irish.

The song was recorded before her death on 25 August, and is a collaboration with Welsh singer-songwriter Bronwen Lewis as well as Parton's niece, Jada Star.

The version has parts of the song sung in English and Welsh - but the lyrics presented on the digital audio streaming service Spotify actually showed the language as Irish.

Spotify removed the Irish lyrics after the BBC approached it for comment.

The BBC asked Spotify when the single and lyrics were uploaded, when the error was noticed and when it will be replaced, but did not receive a response.

Grok releases the first seven minutes of its AI-generated ‘Odyssey’
NEWS link
Three months after Elon Musk declared that Grok would release a full-length, “historically accurate” movie version of “The Odyssey,” Grok has published a whole seven minutes — what the company is now calling “Episode 1 of our Odyssey series.”

Musk had previously lashed out at Christopher Nolan’s version of “The Odyssey” because Nolan cast nonwhite and transgender actors. And Nolan is, in many ways, a perfect foil for Musk — while SpaceX and Tesla CEO hypes up data centers in space and posts an unending stream of AI-generated content, Nolan has described himself as “a techno-skeptic” and said that before AI, he’d never seen a technology “so completely rejected by the public.”

And while Nolan’s version of “The Odyssey” certainly used plenty of visual effects, it’s primarily a feat of practical filmmaking, with a shoot spanning six countries and a cast and crew of thousands. After its release in July, the film became an extraordinary box office success, selling out Imax screenings for months and becoming the likely front-runner at the next Academy Awards.

As for the Grok version of “The Odyssey” (created in collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker), well, you can watch for yourself.

Watch Episode 1 of our Odyssey series made with Grok Imagine.

I’ll admit it’s not as spectacularly ugly as I’d expected, and certainly more impressive than other videos that Musk has posted recently. If I didn’t know better, there were moments when I might have thought these were real actors sailing across a real sea. And while I can’t speak to Grok’s historical accuracy, it does seem that all the characters come in a Musk-approved skin color, while the narrator uses a British accent that will sound familiar to anyone who’s played a fantasy video game or watched a generic Hollywood epic from the past 25 years.

What the footage really lacks is any sense of artistry, inspiration, or human interest. The backstory — delivered via the aforementioned voiceover — seems to go on forever, finally giving way to one bearded face after another, each shouting stilted lines that make Nolan’s dialogue sound like Shakespeare.

While a few individual shots might provide a reasonable simulacrum of reality, the whole thing feels completely airless, offering viewers no sense of momentum, no reason to care about anyone or anything on-screen. And where I had no trouble paying attention for the nearly three-hour runtime of Nolan’s “Odyssey,” I was listlessly checking how much I had left before the Grok version was even halfway through.

It’s hard to imagine being interested in another seven minutes of this, much less a full movie’s worth.

‘Cyberselfish’ author takes aim at techno-libertarianism as her book returns from the dead
NEWS link
It’s hard for books about technology to age well. They always risk becoming outdated as companies rise and fall, and as one hot new product is replaced by the next.

But last year, “Nerd Reich” author Gil Durán declared that it was time to revive the career of Paulina Borsook, who he said “saw it all very clearly and tried to warn us 25 years ago.” Later that fall, The New York Times reported that Borsook’s “Cyberselfish” — first published in 2000 — was finding new fans who want to understand why the tech industry “lost its way.”

Now, long after going out of print, “Cyberselfish” is returning in a new edition from Tin House.

Borsook told me in a Zoom interview that the book is meant to be “almost a travelogue” of her attempts to understand what she calls the techno-libertarian influence on Silicon Valley culture.

“That’s a 12-year-old view of the world,” Borsook said, describing it as “a kind of basket of beliefs” that’s “violently anti-regulation,” despite the fact that “no sector of society had benefited more and suffered less from the government than these guys.” In her telling, “even after the dot-com crash, that attitude was just there, percolating around, contaminating the aquifers. It was uncorrected, and it just spread out more and more.”

Borsook has yet to publish a second book, and she said that after “Cyberselfish” was first released, “no one was interested in anything I might have to say about anything, tech or not tech, forever after.”

But last year, she began to notice that prices for used copies were beginning to creep up, and she was starting to see “very out-of-the-blue, I-did-not-know-these-people posts on social media about how important this book was,” as well as inquiries from “European academics,” eventually leading to more press coverage and the new Tin House edition, with a new introduction by Durán.

Keep reading for our full conversation, edited for length and clarity, in which Borsook discusses AI, how Silicon Valley has transformed in the past 25 years, and what advice she has for young people seeking a career in tech.

Do you want to talk a little bit about how your interest in techno-libertarianism started, and how you decided that there was a book in this?

Everything with me is always inadvertent. I started knocking around tech circles, however we define it, in the early-middle ‘80s, in the Bay Area. And then I would say, starting around maybe the early ‘90s, I would hear these — to me — very weird, offhand remarks that some people would make that I couldn’t make any sense out of.

It’s not my nature to argue with people. It’s my nature to listen, and so I didn’t have the term for it except libertarian. But it seemed very screwy because initially, I grew up in Pasadena, which was [the home of the] Caltech-JPL space program, and so the parents of the kids I knew were another STEM culture. When I first got into Silicon Valley, I thought, “Oh, this is just another STEM culture like I’m familiar with.” And those guys [at Caltech and JPL] had a very clear sense of what the government can do for you, were not into enlightened self-interest. It was a different personality type, and they certainly didn’t self-anoint with how glorious and grand and magisterial they were, even though they were doing great things.

I was just listening, I guess, and being confused. Even then, I knew no sector of society had benefited more and suffered less from the government than these guys. So why are they acting like this?

So, backstory: My agent picked me up right after my MFA in Columbia, and he said to me, “You know, it’s really hard to get fiction published. Do you have a nonfiction book in you?” And I said, “Well, there’s this weird subculture that I’ve been observing that I don’t understand, and any time I don’t understand something, I want to explore it.” That got me down the rabbit hole of looking at this stuff and writing about it, and I consider it really almost a travelogue, in the sense of “Black Lamb and Gray Falcon” or that kind of stuff, almost more than, “This is a polemic.” It’s more like: snapshot, snapshot, snapshot.

I just fell into it, and also I’m sufficiently narcissistic that I felt I was uniquely qualified to write about this, and no one else was paying any attention, and that was very important to me.

I haven’t done a backread of all the other books written about the tech industry before “Cyberselfish.” My sense is that you do recognize, say, reading Steven Levy’s work that there is this alternative philosophy, libertarian streak running through Silicon Valley. But no one really pulled it out and put it under the microscope in that way.

That’s really true. And then most of the writing — certainly in the ’90s, but maybe later — was very celebratory. It wasn’t, “Wait a minute, what’s going on here?”

I heard [New York Times reporter] John Markoff give a talk about six months ago, and he said something I really liked. He said, “Silicon Valley is a multicultural place.” By which he didn’t mean your country of origin. What he meant is there’s all these different kinds of cultures in there, and he was always more focused on these countercultural [elements,] that kind of thing.

I’m never saying that wasn’t there. I’m just saying there was this other thing that I was more interested in. So they’re running in parallel. I don’t even think they’re in conflict.

It sounds like you don’t see the techno-libertarian side of it emerging from the counterculture, but rather [as] distinct cultures within Silicon Valley.

One of the distinctions I made in — I call it TDB, that damn book — is that distinction I made between Ravers and Gilders, and the Gilders being the social conservatives. I named them after George Gilder, who was this repellent thought leader of the early ’90s, very conservative, very reactionary, very backward-looking. And then the Ravers, in homage to John Perry Barlow, drugs and sex and rock and roll, “we’re going to Burning Man,” much more culturally liberal.

And that distinction has held up, because you have that in contemporary Silicon Valley. You have these Christian nationalists and conservative Catholics in positions of leadership, and then you also have the Burners and people having interesting experimentations with sexuality and drugs and the [effective altruist] and AI worlds. And so, what’s the counterculture bit of it? Maybe the personal freedom aspect of it is countercultural.

Another weird thing we always have to point out is that the [San Francisco] peninsula votes blue, still. Ro Khanna is the congressman from there. So I’m really talking about culture rather than electoral politics. [And I’m talking about] the leadership class here, the tech overlords. It’s not so clear to me how much the rank and file are like this, though probably more than when I was more familiar with what was going on there.

Because I think a lot of people have been attracted to work in crypto or AI, and they’re not thinking about the greater political surround. But they’ll drink whatever they’re handed, and they don’t much care.

We can point to people who are in charge, who have these [right-wing] beliefs or are allied with the Trump administration. There’s another executive class that maybe doesn’t have exactly the same beliefs, but is able to make themselves very comfortable with it.

And then you have that same diversity that you were talking about. There’s different communities, different cultures underneath. I’ve certainly spoken to people who work for someone like Elon Musk, and they’re like, yeah, “I don’t love this guy, but right now, I can’t afford to lose this job.”

Right, I think there’s a lot more of that going on than in times past, because there’s greater precarity in terms of employment, and so people [say,] “I’ve got a job, I’m going to hold on to it.” […] Or, “I don’t espouse the beliefs that they’re giving out, but my project is okay.” Those kinds of things always go on.

For you folks who aren’t familiar with the book and maybe have a general sense that there is a libertarian strain in Silicon Valley, can you say more why — if somebody thinks, “I believe in technology being liberatory, and maybe it can free us from the shackles of government bureaucracy and things like that,” why is techno-libertarianism a bad thing?

First of all, that’s a 12-year-old view of the world.

I didn’t really have a good word, but it was a kind of basket of beliefs, and now we’d say maybe a cloud, and it was violently anti-regulation. It was bad borrowing from biology. “Let’s just let things evolve and they will be fine.” They have no idea how much government has subsidized and made possible their life, their world, all the R&D.

Government can do bad things. I’m an old hippie. I know about the war in Vietnam. I know what the CIA did with Allende. So I don’t want to come across [as if] I think it’s all okay. I don’t. But this sector of society has less to complain about.

And one thing that just makes me grit my teeth right now is a lot of these guys are moving to Nevada to live on the Nevada side of Tahoe, because they want to escape California taxes. Sergey [Brin] saying, “California is turning into Soviet Russia.” Are you nuts? Because the thing is, they all love Tahoe. Why do they think the water of Tahoe is so pure and blue? That is decades of government intervention and interference, environmental scientists, regulation. I mean, there’s this inability to connect the dots and lack of history.

To what extent is what we’re seeing now with the tech industry, with their alignment with the Trump administration, with all these other dystopian things going on, how much of that is a shift? And to what extent is this all one story, continuous with what you were seeing before?

Unfortunately, I see more the continuity. Excuse me for [my own] bad borrowing from biology, but […] I really see the Netscape IPO is when things really began to change, and Silicon Valley was invaded by the finance bros, and a real change in attitude. You got the culture of flip and flee, all that kind of stuff. Even after the dot-com crash, that attitude was just there, percolating around, contaminating the aquifers. It was uncorrected, and it just spread out more and more.

When you have things like Airbnb or Uber, which are strictly financial plays, they’re not technology innovation by my definition, but there was too much investment money in the world that didn’t know where to go. It would invest in these things, and these people would parrot this language. So I thought, “Ah, this is left over from 15 years ago,” in terms of their self-justification.

And the way that something like Airbnb fought so hard against any kind of regulation and anything that would ask them to be any kind of a good community actor in the communities they basically destroyed, in a lot of ways, in terms of the housing market. It’s like, “Yeah, that’s that attitude I was talking about way back then.” It’s like Giardia in the water system.

You can say, with good reason, that there was a lot of wonderful stuff that came out, and all the children of General Magic and all the great things that they created. I would never say that’s not true, but I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about the business culture of these people, how they see themselves. Sociopathy is a business virtue in a way that was never there before.

How do you see the rise of AI through that lens?

It’s perfect. “We don’t need to be regulated. We’re the most brilliant, genius, wonderful people in the world.” I see AI right now as a big Ponzi scheme.

You probably saw that really horrible ad that Apple did a couple of years ago, for one of their new computers, and they had all the musical instruments and all writing and [it all went into] the hydraulic press. How did Apple become so tone deaf? This is not the Apple that all the quote “creative class” loved for so many years. It’s not the Apple of the 1984 ad. But they still see themselves in this liberatory way.

If you buy the stockholder theory of value, it justifies whatever the AI companies are doing because of the stock play, not because it’s intrinsically valuable.

In the last couple of years, [“Cyberselfish”] has had this renaissance, leading up to the current reissue. When was that something that you started to notice?

This was maybe an exercise in masochism, but a couple of times a year, I’d look at the used book platforms, and it was selling for three bucks, which means that the seller is making more money on the shipping and handling than on the book, which is really humiliating.

I would say starting maybe a year and a half ago, I began to notice the prices are creeping up — not hugely, initially, but they were creeping up. And also, I was beginning to be contacted by European academics who wanted to talk to me. And I thought, “How did you even hear about this?” And then there were some very out-of-the-blue, I-did-not-know-these-people posts on social media about how important this book was, it shouldn’t have been forgotten, this is wrong.

Long story short, I got led to Gil Durán, who wrote “The Nerd Reich,” and then we went for lunch, and we realized we are kindred spirits. Around that same time, Steven Levy, who was working on a piece for Wired about “How did I get it so wrong?” — and of course, I’m sitting here thinking, “Yeah, Steven, how did you?” — Steven contacted Gil and talked to him for 45 minutes, and Gil said, “You should really talk to Paulina, she’s been tracking this stuff forever.”

So Steven never quoted Gil. He never contacted me. And when Steven’s piece came Gil put this incredible rant on Bluesky saying I got everything right. “We really need to support her. Let’s try to bring this book back into print.” And between that and the podcast I did with him, all of a sudden, you could not get a copy of TDB for love or money.

[In the new edition,] there’s the new introduction by Gil, but otherwise it’s the book as it appeared [in 2000.]

Absolutely, and then I wrote a little introduction, going into more, “This is how this came back from the dead.” The acquiring editor at Tin House, she said to me, “Don’t change a word,” which is exactly what I wanted to hear. Because I think it’s an artifact of a time and place.

And with a book like this, if you start thinking, “Well, should we update this? Should we add to that?” it turns into a different book. People were glomming on to the book as it was. They weren’t saying, “Oh, it would be great if we updated this.” So, no, it’s not updated.

Hopefully, it’s not naive of me to imagine that there are people who might read this interview, read your book, and they are mostly on-board with what you’re saying about the tech industry and techno-libertarianism. Maybe they work at some big tech company [or] they have a startup themselves, and they’re like, “I don’t agree with the Peter Thiels and Elon Musks of the world.” Do you think that those people can reform or change the tech industry from within?

I want it to be true, because one of the questions that I’m getting these days, and I wish I could answer it better, is running into young people, they’re in CS or engineering or something, and they want a career in that, and they don’t buy this toxic stuff. “What can we do?”

And I go, “I’m not sure, because first of all, AI is sucking up all the investment money right now. So if you want to do almost anything, if it’s not AI-related, you can’t do it. Or a military-industrial thing. Government is so broke right now. Can you get a job in government? I’m not sure. Even the state governments, or I’d say the nonprofit sector, but that’s not doing well, either.”

I have this frantic thing of, I adore these kids and I want to support them and I don’t know what to tell them to do. It used to be that you could start a small company, a small consultancy, just you and a friend or two, and it didn’t have to elephantise as a grotesque growth, you could just bootstrap, but the revenue supported the growth, and you could do that. I’m not too sure how much of that world still exists. I think during the app era, you could also do that. I’m not sure now, but I never want to underestimate the both desperation and ingenuity of people, and so it may be possible.

I think your larger question — which is, do I think these big companies can be reformed from within — I think all it takes is a change. They’re amoral enough that if it’s not in their interest to link arms with the MAGA thing, they’ll do something different. I’m very cynical about it.

But I think the people who might be thinking about what used to be called appropriate technology, I’d love to see those people get funded or find a company that does that. It could be possible — whether they can do it within the venue of the hyperscalers, I don’t know, but I would hope that they could spin off and maybe do something else.

AI delivers ‘zero financial payoff’ to most companies, Apollo economist says
NEWS link
In Brief

AI hasn’t benefited the bottom line of any big corporations outside the tech industry, according to a note recently published by the chief economist at Apollo Global Management (the private equity giant that used to own TechCrunch).

Apollo’s Torsten Slok focuses on what he calls the S&P 493 — the S&P 500, minus Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla — finding that profit margins and revenue per worker appear to be flat, with no evidence that AI is improving productivity.

“Despite massive investments and widespread hype around artificial intelligence, the technology has delivered zero financial payoff to corporate America outside of tech,” Slok said.

Is this simply a matter of non-tech companies lagging behind the tech giants? Slok sounded skeptical, arguing that it will be tough for corporate America to “turn increasingly cheap intelligence into higher revenue growth and higher profit margins.”

“AI may be a great calculator, but in business, intelligence is mostly judgment,” he wrote, later adding, “AI does not understand accountability, trust, culture, unwritten rules, ethical trade-offs or fairness, all of which shape reputational risk and ultimately drive revenue growth and profit margins.”

Recent studies have also found that AI has yet to deliver significant productivity gains.

TechCrunch Mobility: Blue-green is the color of autonomy

U.S. federal safety regulators continue to tackle the sticky problem of autonomous vehicles, this time with a proposal that could signal to the public, quite literally, when a vehicle is operating autonomously.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proposed new lighting requirements for autonomous vehicles that include an option (dare I say a strong suggestion?) to use cyan-colored lights to signal when a vehicle is operating autonomously without a human occupant monitoring the road.

The agency is not proposing a mandate for blue-green lights. Importantly, under the proposal, the lights would be used when an AV is operating in autonomous mode.

Still, federal regulators are clearly seeking some uniform way of identifying autonomous vehicles.

The proposal establishes equipment specifications, including where the lights are mounted, the color they emit, and how they’re activated. It would also remove requirements for manually operated controls for turn signals, high beams, and hazard lights.

Under the proposal, the NHTSA suggests the lights be cyan (blue-green), remain steadily illuminated rather than flash, and be visible from the front, rear, and both sides.

This latest proposal is one piece of a bigger effort to update regulations that help speed up the adoption of AVs while maintaining safety, according to NHTSA administrator Jonathan Morrison.

The agency is already working on a federal automated vehicle framework and is trying to update federal motor vehicle safety standards, which already govern automakers today. For instance, FMVSS rules were not designed for vehicles like the Tesla Cybercab and Zoox robotaxi, which lack traditional, federally required equipment like pedals, steering wheels, and design features like side mirrors and rearview mirrors.

While the feds wrestle over regulating the future of transportation, GM laid out how it plans to be part of it. The automaker held its annual GM Forward event, and a lot of what was announced builds on last year’s push into AI. But now we have more details and dates.

The U.S. automaker is overhauling the electrical and computational guts of its future vehicles in a bid to deliver faster software, more capable automated driving features, and a custom, conversational AI assistant that will change its 30-year-old OnStar service.

This technological overhaul is set to debut in 2028 with the Cadillac Escalade IQ. The company will also roll out an autonomous highway driving feature in 2028 that will allow drivers to have their hands and eyes off the road and without the need to be ready to take over.

GM has also adopted enterprise AI across the company to slash its traditional four- to five-year development timeline in half.

I have been around long enough to remember previous efforts at GM and other legacy automakers, all of which were interpreted as a bid to compete with Tesla. This time, GM seems to be preparing for a bigger fight.

Deals!

AI startups are getting snapped up across industries, including transportation. The latest example is Rivian’s acquisition of Third Dimension, a U.K. startup founded by veterans of the gaming and autonomous vehicle industries that uses AI to turn images and videos into lifelike 3D worlds.

This is all about simulation, and specifically the idea of taking driving data and bringing it into a virtual world that matches the physical world. Rivian’s head of autonomy, James Philbin, told me the company knew it needed a technology that could close the “sim-to-real gap,” meaning the data gap between real and simulated environments.

Students of the AV industry will likely shout “Simulation is so 2017!” And yes, that’s true, simulation is a tool AV developers have relied on and continue to do so. The technology behind simulation continues to evolve, and startups like Third Dimension are ripe for the picking.

The terms of the deal weren’t released. There are a few clues for what size of deal this may have been. Third Dimension previously raised a $7 million seed round, and it has about 15 engineers, and Rivian didn’t disclose this in an SEC filing (meaning it didn’t hit the bar for material information).

Other deals that got my attention …

Ride-hailing company inDrive, known for letting passengers and drivers negotiate fares, is working with Chinese autonomous driving firm Pony.ai and Nvidia to begin testing robotaxis in Kazakhstan in 2027. The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore bringing Pony.ai’s robotaxis to inDrive’s platform.

Reliable Robotics, a startup trying to commercialize autonomous flying technology that can be installed on existing aircraft, raised $115 million. The Series D extension round included $90 million in equity funding led by Nimble Partners and $25 million in debt from Silicon Valley Bank. The Series D round now totals $275 million and has pushed the startup’s valuation beyond the $1 billion mark.

Notable reads and other tidbits

A group fighting robotaxis has some mysterious origins, the Washington Post reported. This reminds me of another anti-robotaxi group that I dug into earlier this summer called Coalition for Accountability and Road Safety, which was canvassing voters and posting on social media. My reporting discovered that the organization was registered to an employee of a New York lobbying firm that has previously been retained by several labor unions and the New York Black Car Operators’ Injury Compensation Fund.

GM is closing a plant south of Detroit that assembled battery packs for Cadillac’s flagship EV, the Celestiq, and both electric drive units and battery packs for the plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. The closure is not related to GM’s electric vehicle strategy but because the lease on the site was nearing its end, according to a GM spokesperson.

Google is upgrading Gemini in vehicles with a personal intelligence feature that can draw on information from Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google Search history, and other connected Google services to understand your preferences, activities, and past experiences.

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe shared his vision for how autonomy will allow his company to build radically different kinds of vehicles than the R1S electric pickup truck and R1S and R2 SUVs it makes today. All eyes are on R4.

Tesla and SpaceX reported third-quarter earnings this week, and comments by Elon Musk, who is CEO of both companies, has kicked merger talk into fifth gear. Musk said the boards of each company have formed special committees to review a merger.

Meanwhile, SpaceX’s AI business is booming, generating $7.5 billion in revenue, and now makes up 52% of the company’s income. And Tesla’s revenue, across its segments, was flat, while the company’s expenses grew. The upshot: Profits fell 43% year-over-year. Musk is very much focused on the company’s AI and robotics future, though. Tesla started production of its Optimus humanoid robot, reported rosy FSD subscription growth even as the “unsupervised version” was delayed to Q2 next year, and said it plans to start selling its Cybercab to customers by the end of the year. As senior reporter Sean O’Kane wrote: Tesla is prepping for a Cybercab onslaught.

Waymo keeps expanding within cities it already operates and into new ones. The company said it plans to launch a robotaxi service in Spain, starting with Madrid. It expects to open it up to riders in 2027. Closer to home, Waymo is now shuttling customers to and from the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas.

One more thing …

TechCrunch Disrupt just wrapped and I am already preparing for another event. This time, it is the Founder Summit — a one-day event in Boston focused on, you guessed it, founders. This event, taking place November 4, is valuable for startup founders, aspiring founders, and investors. Attendees can expect advice-driven talks from VCs and serial founders, plus lots of chances to network.

And I will be there! Come say hi. To help make that happen, I will give TechCrunch Mobility readers a 30% discount on tickets. Click this link and use the code mobility30.

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link
