No 10 appears to backtrack on PM's freedom of movement referendum suggestion
NEWS link
Downing Street has appeared to backtrack on the prime minister's suggestion that he could call another referendum on whether to join the EU's freedom of movement.

Asked earlier by broadcasters if he could introduce freedom of movement without a referendum, Andy Burnham said "no".

But sources told the BBC no decision on that has been made and the prime minister's deputy spokesperson later said the government was not going to "get ahead" of how to consult the public.

Burnham has ruled out major changes to the UK's relationship with the EU before the next general election but says he wants start a conversation about potential options.

He told broadcasters that he would "never move ahead of the British public when it comes to Brexit".

Migration dominated debate during the 2016 Brexit campaign, with the Leave campaign raising issues about freedom of movement allowing any EU citizen to move to the UK.

Burnham has said he is committed to Labour's 2024 election manifesto, which ruled out a return of free movement, single market membership or a customs union.

And he has previously stressed any changes would require a mandate at a general election, which is due by 2029.

After lengthy questioning about the issue, Number 10 sought to clarify the prime minister's remarks, saying: "The prime minister isn't proposing a return to freedom of movement or any option."

"He is crucially not leaning either way and that will be for the British public to decide," the prime minister's deputy spokeswoman said.

"What he wants to do first is have a conversation with the public. The process will follow."

She added: "The PM thinks the Brexit deal is not good enough."

Freedom of movement, which allows EU citizens to travel, live, study and work in any member country, is a precondition of membership of the EU's single market.

The single market enables goods, services and people to move freely between member states, with countries also applying many common rules and standards.

Israelis and Americans are both voting - with global consequences
NEWS link
In the next week, two sets of elections will be held on two continents, the outcomes of which could have profound consequences for the world.

By a fluke of electoral timetabling, millions of voters around 6,000 miles apart will unite in exercising their democratic rights within days of each other.

Voters in Israel go to the polls on Tuesday to elect a new parliament; a week later, voters in the United States will elect a new Congress.

A former speaker of that Congress, Tip O'Neill, may have once said that "all politics is local". But the consequences of these elections will undoubtedly be global.

For these elections are not just proximate, they are intertwined.

The future governance of Israel will have a lasting impact on the Middle East and wars raging across the region.

And any change in the electoral map of America could shape not just those wars but also the future of the global economy.

Between the two there is a physical connection: the lobby group Republicans Overseas Israel estimates about half a million Israelis with American passports can vote in both polls.

Brazil election: How 'Lula's Army' WhatsApp channel helped turn race around
NEWS link
Measuring the electoral impact of online mobilisation, however, is notoriously difficult.

While Lula's allies credit Lula's Army with helping fuel the comeback, political scientists caution that it is impossible to determine how many votes, if any, were directly influenced by the WhatsApp operation.

Political scientist Denilde Holzhacker argues that a shift in Lula's campaign strategy was key to his comeback.

Rather than relying solely on online engagement, she says the Workers' Party candidate succeeded in connecting digital campaigning with grassroots mobilisation on the ground.

According to Holzhacker, the campaign intensified local efforts and adapted its messaging - linking a Bolsonaro victory with concerns about potential changes to social programmes and the loss of rights.

"It was to Lula's credit that he recognised his own weakness and completely changed his style," she says. "And Janones managed to do something that had seemed unthinkable for Brazil's left - dominate social media."

By contrast, Holzhacker argues that Flávio Bolsonaro entered the run-off overly confident of victory and failed to communicate his message to his supporters as effectively.

Sociologist and political scientist Mayra Goulart, a professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, also cautions against attributing Lula's comeback solely to social media.

"It was a combination of social media and street-level mobilisation," she says. "The physical world enabled a form of mobilisation capable of reducing abstention and persuading undecided voters."

In her view, Lula's supporters succeeded in turning online enthusiasm into real-world political engagement.

"Those committed to Lula's victory worked to bring people together and persuade them to vote," Goulart says.

She argues that the effort not only helped increase turnout but could also prove valuable for Lula's next administration.

"I believe this collective effort was an important learning experience and will prove valuable for a government that still faces many battles ahead. It not only helped reduce abstention, but also converted a significant number of undecided voters."

Lula himself suggested that the mobilisation behind his comeback could shape the way he governs in the years ahead.

In his victory speech, he said the election had taught him many lessons and pledged to change the way Brazil is governed.

"We are going to give people a greater say in decision-making, and digital communication will play a much bigger role in my government."

Anthropic warns of AI's 'catastrophic risks' ahead of major IPO
NEWS link
Anthropic has warned artificial intelligence (AI) could pose "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity" as it unveiled details of its planned blockbuster stock market listing in the US.

The firm's valuation is expected to exceed that of SpaceX, which was the biggest-ever listing at an initial valuation of about $1.8 trillion in the summer.

Anthropic has not yet disclosed the number of shares to be released, their price range, or a date for the listing.

The Claude chatbot developer reported $16.3bn (£12.2bn) of revenue in the first half of the year, with losses of more than $80.7bn.

Anthropic, which said it will list on the Nasdaq under the symbol ANT, will be the first fully AI-focused company to go public, making it a test case for the future of the technology.

In a filing ahead of its listing, Anthropic said concerns had been raised by policymakers, regulators and researchers as well as by people within its organisation that AI systems posed a significant risk to humanity.

It said advanced AI systems "could, if not developed, deployed, and operated with appropriate safeguards, oversight, and security measures, pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity, particularly if such systems were misused, replicated, weaponised, or allowed to operate with a high degree of autonomy".

Anthropic was founded five years ago by chief executive Dario Amodei, his sister Daniela Amodei and five others, and announced its intention to go public in June.

Its main rival, OpenAI, quickly followed suit. That listing is now expected to occur early next year, according to a person familiar with OpenAI's plans.

Those announcements were followed by a wave of cyber-security and other technological breaches involving their AI agents - bots designed to operate somewhat autonomously.

Current and former staff of both companies also warned AI technology was being developed without the ability to protect humanity from possible future harms enacted by AI tools.

As Anthropic revealed its stock debut plans on Monday, the owners of the rights to Elvis Presley's music sued the AI firm accusing it of using hundreds of the rock-and-roll star's songs to train its chatbot Claude.

Healey vows cheaper marmalade and gherkins in pre-Budget package
NEWS link
John Healey will remove import taxes on marmalade, gherkins and more than 100 products in a bid to give families "breathing space" with the cost of living at the Budget.

The chancellor on Wednesday will promise a fresh series of "everyday fixes" to ease the pressure on households.

The measures will also include an end to the so-called cliff-edge for those receiving carer's allowance payments and higher tax-free mileage rates being made permanent.

But the Conservatives said the offer of "cheaper gherkins" was "an insult to families hammered by Labour's tax rises".

Ahead of the Budget, the government said it is removing tariffs on more than 100 "family favourite" products, while supporting farmers facing higher fertiliser costs and households reliant on heating oil.

The government says the changes could save households up to £21 per year when combined with existing tariff suspensions on products including pasta, fruit juice and tuna.

Busted's James Bourne says 'hero' brother saved his life with kidney donation
NEWS link
Busted star James Bourne has said his brother "saved my life" by donating a kidney, after doctors had given him "a few years left to live".

The guitarist, 43, dropped out of an arena tour featuring his band and fellow punk-pop favourites McFly in September 2025, just a day before it began.

He blamed health problems and was replaced by his younger brother Chris.

James later said he needed major surgery to "extend my life", and has now thanked his "hero" Chris and said they are both recovering from their transplant operations.

Oscar-winning producer says BBC gave her £400,000 payout after she raised antisemitism concerns
NEWS link
An Oscar-winning executive producer claims she received a £400,000 payout from the BBC after alleging she faced antisemitic remarks from colleagues at the corporation.

Lucie Kon, who worked as a commissioning editor overseeing several documentaries, including Mr Nobody Against Putin, told The Telegraph, external that BBC colleagues said Zionists like her were "evil" following the 7 October attacks.

Kon's post was made redundant as part of a BBC restructure. She said the payment she received was for redundancy back pay and settlement for personal injury caused by the process.

The BBC says it did not uphold any of the allegations of antisemitism but accepted there were "shortcomings" in how it treated Kon, which had a "personal impact" on her.

The corporation did not specify what the shortcomings were.

Kon says she raised a number of concerns about how she was treated following the Hamas-led 7 October attacks.

"I became a problem," she told BBC News.

"I really did feel like I had Jew stamped on my forehead. I became a problem. And anytime I tried to mention anything, it was like, 'Oh God, there she goes again.'

"I became a proper pain. They didn't know what else to do with me."

Kon also claimed she was told by a colleague that "if you want to call Hamas terrorists then you have to call Israel terrorists, too".

She helped lead a group representing Jewish staff in the corporation and raised issues with the then-director general, Tim Davie.

Kon told The Telegraph that her religion had not been an issue during her many years working for the BBC until the October 7 attacks.

She later told LBC that the BBC was "not institutionally antisemitic".

The BBC said it was grateful that Kon acknowledged the BBC is not institutionally antisemitic, adding that she was a "valued member of staff with many years of dedicated service" to the corporation.

Rapper Macklemore begins Free Palestine tour after Ed Sheeran fallout
NEWS link
Macklemore has begun his Free Palestine tour in Dublin after Ed Sheeran's controversial decision to drop the rapper from his tour last month.

The American star is playing to a crowd of up to 13,000 at the city's 3Arena - and, hours before the sell-out show, had promised "many incredible surprise guests".

The artist - whose real name is Benjamin Haggerty - announced the tour days after being dropped from Sheeran's Loop Tour following pro-Palestinian comments he made onstage.

He was criticised by Jewish groups after saying "free Palestine" at two concerts and making political speeches, including referring to the death toll from Israel's military action in Gaza as a genocide - a claim that Israel rejects.

Sheeran later stressed that the decision to drop Macklemore was made by his promoter, not by himself.

Among the acts on the bill at Macklemore's Dublin show were singer-songwriter Hozier, rap trio Kneecap and folk band Beoga, who had also performed on Sheeran's tour.

Macklemore has said that proceeds from his Free Palestine tour will go to organisations supporting Palestinians.

He will perform in Paris on Thursday and in London on Friday.

The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza in response to an unprecedented Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage.

During Israel's military campaign in Gaza more than 70,000 people have been killed, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry, whose figures are considered reliable by the UN.

Israel says its troops conduct self-defence operations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank in accordance with international law.

Will the public change its mind about Meghan?
NEWS link
Meghan, who recently moved back to the UK with Prince Harry and their children, has frequently been accused of cutting off those once close to her.

Her treatment of her father was seen as a prime example.

"She ditched her family, ditched her dad, ditched most of her old friends, split Harry from William," wrote one commentator in 2020.

"Get on a plane and go see the poor man before it's too late," she was told on social media about her father.

All of that might need to be viewed in a different and more sympathetic light.

By 2019, Meghan had received disturbing allegations about Thomas Markle, in a letter from her father's first wife, Roslyn Loveless.

She says it is why she kept her distance and also why she didn't bring her children to him, including when she moved to the United States with her family.

That letter was shared with Meghan by the police, at a time when she was classified as a working royal. It's not clear who else knew about the letter, including Palace officials, but it must have been a sensitive matter for her.

And according to the Sussexes' spokesman, Meghan believed an investigation into the allegations was going ahead, presumably at a time when she was on official trips and having to put on a brave face.

Tributes paid to man killed by falling tree in Storm Boelo
NEWS link
Tributes have been paid to a man who died after being hit by a falling tree in Dumfries and Galloway.

Richard Baines, 60, the long-serving curator of Logan Botanic Garden near Stranraer, died during Storm Boelo on Sunday morning.

It is understood that he was walking near his home in Mid Kelton, just outside Castle Douglas, when the accident happened.

David Knott, director of horticulture at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, said they were "desperately sad, devastated" by the news.

"He had a warmth, a genuine sense of humour, he always made time for individuals and that's one of the tributes that has been said many times this morning," Knott told BBC Scotland News.

"He always found time for his colleagues. And he was always very supportive in providing opportunities for the next generation of horticulturalists. He was a very genuine and warm human being."

Logan Botanic Garden is home to a range of exotic plants as it benefits from the warming influence of the Gulf Stream. It is one of four Scottish gardens run by the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh.

Knott said Baines came up with the description of Logan as "Scotland's most exotic garden" and worked hard to promote both the garden and the south-west of Scotland.

Backlash after Trump invokes 9/11 in attack on El-Sayed
NEWS link
El-Sayed's opponents have sought to link him to the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist organisation that was founded in Egypt. Trump designated certain chapters of it as Foreign Terrorist Organisations earlier this year.

Some of the scrutiny of the affiliations of El-Sayed and his family members relates to their writings from more than a decade ago.

A social media post, external in 2012 by El-Sayed's half-sister, Eman Abdelhadi, appeared to refer to the movement, saying "my family has long been MB". El-Sayed's team have previously distanced him from other comments by Abdelhadi.

Critics have also pointed to an opinion piece El-Sayed wrote in Huffington Post in 2011, external about pro-democracy protesters in Egypt. In it, he acknowledged concerns that "supporting democracy in Egypt might allow the country to fall to the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood".

A year later he also allegedly signed an open letter by Egyptian Americans. In it, the group urged Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president and a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, to "purge the media and police" following the toppling of the authoritarian regime in the Arab Spring. This letter has not been discussed by El-Sayed.

El-Sayed has previously denied any connection to the Muslim Brotherhood and has stressed his loyalty to the United States. Asked recently at a town hall event whether he would disavow the organisation, he responded: "Absolutely."

Also in 2012, El-Sayed's current opponent Rogers, who was then a US representative and chairing the House Intelligence Committee, appeared to call for cautious engagement with the Muslim Brotherhood, telling Reuters, external: "Do I think there are moderate Muslim Brotherhood individuals we are going to have to reach out to and talk to? Yes but we are going to have to watch it carefully."

HA Hellyer, senior associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) and an expert on Egypt, says the row has more to do with Islamophobia on the political right in the US than with the Trump administration's actual position on the Muslim Brotherhood.

"If the accusation is to be taken sincerely, then [Trump] should surely have a problem with engaging with any government that has engaged positively with the Brotherhood or with groups that are even more to the right of the Brotherhood," Hellyer told the BBC. "He clearly has not done that."

'Maxxing' selected as Dictionary.com word of the year
NEWS link
Americans have gone all in on "maxxing", making it the 2026 Word of the Year for Dictionary.com.

Short for maximising, the term "can be used on its own or added to the end of any word to convey you're doing something to the fullest or optimizing it as much as possible", Dictionary.com said in a statement.

It's a major departure from two years ago, when the site, after analysing US social media trends, news stories, and search data, chose demure as word of the year. Last year's was "67".

"Maxxing is the linguistic manifestation of a culture increasingly preoccupied with getting the most out of everything," said Steve Johnson, director of lexicography for the Dictionary Media Group.

Digital media used "maxxing" nearly 19 times more in August 2026 compared to the 2025 monthly average, Dictionary.com found. The site also considered affordability, data centre, odyssey, and the shortened form of uncle, "unc", as potential words of the year.

On social media, many people in Generation Z and younger - those under 30 - post extensively about their maxxing efforts to achieve all sorts of perfection.

Influencers focused on fitness and wellness post about "proteinmaxxing" and "fibermaxxing". Those giving their full attention to improving sleep habits say they are "sleepmaxxing".

The influencer Clavicular has gained thousands of followers as he chronicles his extreme "looksmaxxing" - working to meet a set of prescribed criteria for attractiveness, with particular importance given to jawlines, eyes and physique.

"Whatever we're doing, we want to push it further," Johnson said. "But its expanding uses also reveal how people are responding to that impulse. Some embrace it. Some exaggerate it for laughs. Others subvert it entirely to describe stepping back from the relentless pursuit of more."

People were playing with the term - and idea - for decades before Clavicular started posting videos.

In the opening song for the 1990s television show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, for example, Will Smith raps: "Chillin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool."

"Unfortunately, by the time the dictionary gets a hold of it, that probably means that it's reached critical mass," says teacher Lauren Cella.

Cella, a content creator known for her viral Gen Z history lessons, says she and her students have been using "maxxing" for some time as a suffix.

"They're actually, in their own way, reinventing grammar, which I think is super cool," she says.

Maxxing gives the students permission to "optimise to meet a goal" or do something others might think of as "cringe", and allows them to own it, she says.

"It's a fun, harmless way that kids are expressing themselves and sharing different goals that they have," she says.

Linguist Vanessa Croft, who teaches English, says the internet and digital media make language move at "warp speed", even faster than radio, film or television ever did. As swiftly as new terms are added to the lexicon, they can just as quickly fall out of favour.

"By the time millennials and Gen X or Gen Y start using the terms, Gen Z and Gen Alpha aren't using those terms anymore," she says.

While she and her secondary-school aged students are still "maxxing" too, they are now using it "almost ironically", she says.

Russell Brand asked assistant for female fan phone numbers, court hears
NEWS link
A former personal assistant of Russell Brand has told a court she was instructed to get phone numbers for the entertainer from female fans when she first started working with him.

Helen Berger, who worked closely with Brand from June 2006 to February 2007, said the request "felt uncomfortable" and, after seeking advice, she told the TV personality that she would not do that anymore.

Brand, 51, is accused of three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one charge of indecent assault.

The allegations, made by six female complainants, span a 10-year period between 1999 and 2009. He denies the charges.

Brand had an "insane sexual appetite", Berger told Southwark Crown Court in a written statement on Monday.

Berger left her job with Brand after she became "sick of him", she said. She added that he had sex with numerous women during the time she was his assistant.

She described a work environment where Brand would ask her if he could "go and have sex now" when frustrated with a particular task.

Berger added that she never "witnessed anything against the law" but that "everyone normalised and dismissed his behaviour" so it "made me think it was accepted."

She told the court that "peacock" Brand found random women online to satisfy his "insane sexual appetite and was sleeping with people day and night", but sex often made him depressed.

She told the court Brand used MySpace to find women for sex, and said: "At his house, women often came over and it was clear they were there for sex."

She recalled once finding a female celebrity asleep in Brand's bed while he was wandering around the house half-dressed, and said of the comedian: "He was like a peacock, women would always approach him."

Russell Brand's defence team says any sexual activity was consensual and accounts have been twisted in the light of a defamatory TV documentary in 2023 which made allegations of sexual abuse against the entertainer.

The prosecution is due to finish on Tuesday morning.

Star Trek actor Walter Koenig, who played Pavel Chekov, dies aged 90

Walter Koenig, who played the spirited Russian crewman Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek TV series, has died aged 90.

The US actor was a mainstay on the show as the eager and earnest navigator of the Starship Enterprise, from season two in 1967 until it ended in 1969, later reprising his role in the six original cast movies from 1979 through to 1991.

In the mid-late 1990s, Koenig portrayed a very different character, the ruthless Psi Corps telepath Alfred Bester, in another sci-fi space series, Babylon 5.

His Star Trek co-star George Takei led the tributes, external on social media on Monday, writing: "Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend."

Representatives for Koenig said in a statement given to the BBC: "Today we mourn the passing of Walter Koenig, whose talent, warmth, and unforgettable performances left a lasting mark on generations of fans around the world."

They confirmed he had died "of old age at home in North Hollywood" on Sunday night, "surrounded by his daughter and niece".

Koenig's Chekov added heart and humour to the adventures of the crew, led by William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk.

Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu, added: "Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course."

Harry Kane: Bayern Munich and England striker wins Ballon d'Or after record season
NEWS link
In term of trophies, Kane may have 'only' lifted the German double last season.

But that more than doubled his career trophy total - having also won the Bundesliga the season before.

But in terms of individual output Kane - whose previous best Ballon d'Or finish was 10th - was unmatched last season.

His 61 goals in all competitions for Bayern was 19 more than any other player in Europe's top five leagues managed.

In fact it was the most anyone has recorded since Cristiano Ronaldo also notched 61 for Real Madrid 11 years ago.

He was the Bundesliga's top scorer with 36 goals - 17 clear of anyone else. In the Champions League he scored 14 for the beaten semi-finalists.

In the German Cup he scored 10 goals, including a hat-trick in the 3-0 win over Stuttgart in the final, and he also netted once in the German Super Cup.

No player has ever scored so many goals in a season for Bayern, a club who have had legendary goalscorers like Gerd Muller, Rummenigge and more recently Robert Lewandowski in their ranks.

Kane's 12 goals for England last season - including six at the World Cup - take him up a total of 73.

Only one player in history from Europe's top leagues has scored more in a season, Lionel Messi's 82 for Barcelona and Argentina in 2011-12.

Next on the list are Muller (72 in 1972-73), Cristiano Ronaldo (66 in both 2011-12 and 2014-15), former Brazil striker Ronaldo (66 in 1996-97), Erling Haaland (64 in 2022-23) and Luis Suarez (64 in 2015-16).

Former England striker Alan Shearer recently told BBC Sport: "The winner of the Ballon d'Or should be Harry Kane.

"His numbers for the last 12 to 18 months have been absolutely sensational for Bayern and for England. For that reason, he should get it."

Another ex-Three Lions player Danny Murphy added: "His goalscoring has been relentless, brilliant. He's had one of the best seasons of his career and it'll be a great reward for him if he gets the trophy.

"He's been brilliant at Bayern Munich since he's been there, adapted really well and he's been the best centre forward in the world for the last 12 months."

Ballon d'Or Feminin: Alexia Putellas wins award for record-equalling third time
NEWS link
Putellas was born and grew up in the Catalan municipality of Mollet del Valles, about 12 miles north-east of Barcelona.

She began playing football in the street, and soon became a Barcelona fan and a regular attendee at Camp Nou.

With matches always on the TV at home, former Spain and Barcelona star Andres Iniesta and Brazilian duo Rivaldo and Ronaldinho quickly became her idols.

After attending a summer football camp run by Xavi and playing for local side CE Sabadell, Putellas spent a year at La Masia, Barcelona's famous youth academy.

Spells at Espanyol and Levante followed the disbandment of her girls team, before she eventually returned to Barca in 2012.

Cue the start of a 14-year career with her childhood club during which she won 38 trophies, including 10 league titles and four European cups.

But after winning the Ballon d'Or for the first time in 2021, one of the toughest moments of Putellas' career came when she suffered an ACL injury on the eve of Euro 2022, ruling her out of the tournament.

Though she retained the Ballon d'Or later that year, it took a while for her to return to her best level. Playing only a bit-part role in Spain's triumphant 2023 World Cup campaign would have stung.

After scoring in the 2024 Champions League final and improving further the following season, in 2025-26 she shouldered much of Barcelona's creative burden as Aitana Bonmati missed five months through injury and ended the season a quadruple winner.

If that was not enough, the midfielder scored twice in a 4-0 thrashing of England in June that secured Spain's place at the 2027 World Cup at the Lionesses' expense.

With her contract at Barcelona expiring and keen for a fresh challenge, Putellas made the decision to leave her childhood club. She, and her fans, were distraught.

She had several offers from England, Mexico and the United States, but joined the ambitious project of US billionaire Michelle Kang at London City Lionesses in July.

"I'm just always looking forward to better things and that's why I'm here too, because I always need to be moving as a person and a player," Putellas told BBC's Women's Football Weekly podcast in August.

With three goals and one assist in seven WSL games for her new club, it is clear Putellas is still deserving of her nickname.

Man Utd: Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann on list if Michael Carrick sacked
NEWS link
Michael Carrick has left Manchester United's training ground following talks over his future, with Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann emerging as early contenders to replace him if he is sacked.

Carrick's position at Old Trafford is under major threat following the club's poor start to the season, with work towards identifying his successor believed to be ongoing.

It is understood Howe and Nagelsmann both feature prominently on the list of candidates the club has explored to potentially replace him, and that both managers are aware of United's interest.

Sources have also indicated Aston Villa boss Unai Emery is admired at United, but the fact he is under contract would complicate any move for the Spaniard.

Howe, Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte - who is interested in the job - are out of work, making their potential appointments easier.

Multiple sources have told BBC Sport that former Newcastle boss Howe is fully open to joining United if Carrick loses his job.

Nagelsmann is available after leaving his job as Germany head coach after the World Cup, while Conte - who has also been linked with Juventus - is open to returning to football after leaving Napoli in May.

Carrick left United's Carrington training ground at around 17:00 GMT on Monday.

Should he be dismissed, the 20-time English top-flight champions will be looking to appoint their eighth permanent manager or head coach since Sir Alex Ferguson departed the club in 2013 on the back of winning their most recent title.

Here, BBC Sport takes a closer look at the contenders who could be up for the job.

Totoa Auvaa: Bristol sign Samoan forward sacked by Saracens
NEWS link
Bristol Bears have signed Samoan forward Totoa Auvaa, two weeks after he was sacked by Saracens.

Auvaa, 21, was involved in a nightclub altercation with England cricketers Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson in June.

He was let go by Sarries following another incident in St Albans, which police are investigating.

"His agent reached out to me to see if I would be willing to help him and give him a second chance," Bristol's director of rugby Pat Lam said.

"I've always believed that young people deserve the opportunity to learn from those experiences, grow and become better people."

Lam, himself a former Samoan international, told Bristol's website, external he believed the club could help provide support to Auvaa and was the right place for him to develop on and off the field.

"Totoa is a big, physical young man with enormous potential, who unfortunately has made some mistakes since arriving from a small village in Samoa to the massive city of London.

"Having spent time with Totoa, I feel confident that we can provide him with the mentorship, guidance, support and structure to give him the best possible opportunity to succeed, not just as a rugby player, but as a person - someone his parents and family all the way back in Samoa will be proud of."

Major winners Jon Rahm and Louis Oosthuizen have also confirmed their departures, while McDowell's fellow countryman Tom McKibbin said he was exiting LIV to return to the DP World Tour last week.

England's Tyrrell Hatton and Ian Poulter have also left the competition.

Saudi's Public Investment Fund withdrew its backing from LIV in April - having pumped in more than $5bn (£3.8bn) - leading to the league filing for bankruptcy protection in the United States last month.

It has secured a possible $300m (£224m) in financing from BC Partners Credit to try to move forward with 'LIV 2.0', but only a handful of players have so far committed.

Former world number four McDowell joined LIV when it launched as a lucrative Saudi Arabia-backed project in 2022.

The 11-time DP World Tour winner's best finish on LIV was a tie for second in Virginia in June 2025.

"I've decided not to pursue LIV 2.0," said four-time Ryder Cup player McDowell.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity I've had over the last four years and want to thank everyone who has been part of that journey.

"I look forward to the next chapter in my career."

Earlier this year, McDowell told BBC Sport NI he had held "really positive" talks about returning to the DP World Tour next season, adding he was "lucky to have that option".

Independent review announced into murder of student Henry Nowak
NEWS link
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced an independent review into the murder of Henry Nowak.

The 18-year-old student was fatally stabbed in Southampton in December by Vickrum Digwa, who falsely claimed he had been racially abused and had acted in self-defence. Digwa was jailed for life on 1 June, with a minimum term of 21 years.

Following the teenager's murder, police bodycam footage of him being handcuffed as he lay dying led to intense scrutiny of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and sparked wider debates around knife laws, race, policing and public trust.

The review, which was welcomed by Nowak's family, will be led by former Justice Secretary Alex Chalk KC.

"We must get to truth of what happened before, during and after that awful night and we must do everything in our power to ensure that no family suffers the same fate," Mahmood told the House of Commons on Monday.

Mahmood said the review will investigate what was known about Nowak's killer and if there were missed opportunities to intervene as well as the treatment of his family in the justice system and whether they received enough support.

In a statement published on Monday, the Home Office said the review will be carried out in two parts.

Phase one will cover the police, health services, local authorities educational institutions and faith organisations, including if any concerns were raised relating to weapon possession and violent behavior, the statement said.

It will also look to determine if there were missed opportunities to prevent Nowak's murder.

Phase two will follow after the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has concluded its investigation into the actions of police officers who attended the scene.

It will consider the actions of the IOPC and "if necessary" the police, the Home Office added.

The IOPC launched its own investigation into the response on the night of Nowak's death after bodycam footage showed the 18-year-old was handcuffed and left dying on the floor despite informing officers of his injuries.

The investigation was launched despite a sentencing judge ruling Nowak would not have survived his injuries, however quickly he received treatment.

The Nowak family described the announcement as a "significant moment in our fight for justice."

"We hope this review, alongside the ongoing investigations and inquest, will finally uncover the full truth and deliver the accountability and meaningful change we have fought so hard for," they added in a statement.

"Our experience of the criminal justice system has been deeply disappointing, and we are determined that no other family should have to endure what we have."

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch welcomed the decision to launch the review.

"There must be proper accountability for those who failed Henry and his family," she said.

The review is due to report in five months.

James Anderson: Lancashire to look into farewell for legendary bowler amid fan anger
NEWS link
Lancashire will look into organising a farewell for bowler James Anderson amid fan unrest over his departure from the club.

It was announced last week the 44-year-old, England's all-time leading wicket-taker, has been released by the county he first represented in 2001.

The topic dominated a tense meeting between the club hierarchy and members at Old Trafford on Monday evening, with many members angered by the decision.

Some raised their upset at the fact the end-of-season decision had denied fans the chance to thank Anderson for his service to the county and celebrate his career.

The club, represented by new chief executive Richard Kenyon and incoming director of cricket Paul Farbrace, agreed to look into a solution.

Farbrace joined the meeting via video from his holiday in the United States and is understood to have taken ownership of the decision when taking questions from members.

The former England assistant coach, who left his role in charge of Sussex before joining the Red Rose county, reiterated his explanation from Lancashire's public statement on Sunday - that he wants to build a squad capable of winning the County Championship within the next four years and does not believe Anderson, who turns 45 next year, will play a part in that.

One attendee among about 200 members at the meeting told BBC Sport the atmosphere in the room remained mixed.

Other members suggested Farbrace had gone some way to calming the unrest.

Anderson was Lancashire's captain in the County Championship last season and while the county finished second bottom in Division Two, continuing a poor run of results in recent years, he remained one of their best performers.

He took 50 wickets and was named their Championship player of the year.

A number of counties have expressed an interest in signing the veteran for next season.

Anderson first played List A cricket in 2000 as a 17-year-old for the Lancashire Cricket Board against Suffolk.

He made his professional debut for Lancashire a year later and was in the England team by the end of 2002.

In addition to his 911 international wickets - an England record and a record for all pace bowlers - Anderson claimed 443 first-class scalps for Lancashire, along with 83 in List A cricket and a further 50 in T20s.

When his England career was abruptly ended in 2024, Anderson opted to continue playing with Lancashire in 2025.

At the time, he said he felt he could play for three more years.

In his first public comment since the decision on Sunday, he expressed his sadness at the situation but stopped short of retiring.

Databricks co-founder shares his secrets for winning big enterprise customers
NEWS link
Startups have never been under more pressure to grow quickly. To do that, many of them must land large enterprises, the deep pockets of the IT world, as customers. But as any company that sells to enterprises will tell you, it’s not easy to win such contracts.

One critical mistake most younger startups make is believing that their tech will practically sell itself, says Arsalan Tavakoli-Shiraji, co-founder and senior vice president of field engineering at Databricks, which helps businesses store and analyze huge amounts of data.

Yes. The tech must work well. But that’s not enough, he warns. Databricks today is an AI and big data storage giant, valued at $190 billion, with more than 70% of the Fortune 500 as customers. But it was once a tiny startup, and Tavakoli-Shiraji was responsible for helping bring in its first big deals.

“Everybody when they’re selling to enterprises at startups … we think it’s all about the tech and having the best tech,” Tavakoli-Shiraji told attendees at TechCrunch Disrupt last week. But he learned the hard way that “people and processes matter the most.”

He remembers securing a meeting with a prospect in the early days, only to discover that it was the same person who signed a mega-deal with his major competitor. “He has no interest in listening to me because he bet his career on that competitor,” Tavakoli-Shiraji said. He also remembers early deals fizzling because the startup wasn’t prepared for legal, contractual, or security questions.

He offered his top tips for startups to win big customers:

Sell under a bigger tech company’s umbrella

When Databricks was young, it tried and failed to score a meeting with UBS, the large Swiss bank. Then it did “a partnership with Microsoft,” becoming an Azure cloud partner. That meant sales agreements would be covered under Microsoft’s terms.

But it also meant that Microsoft’s sales folks actually booked the meetings and advocated for the startup. “All of a sudden, that meeting wasn’t hard to get,” the founder recalled. “It was a huge boon to us that we were able to partner with somebody who had that access and distribution.”

With Microsoft’s sales team helping, “we started getting pulled everywhere.” That created new problems, like prospects wanting features for countries Databricks hadn’t expanded to, but they were good problems to have.

Today, Databricks is the big company that works with startups, selling their products under Databricks’ own terms and cybersecurity setup. Examples include Hightouch, which provides AI-powered marketing and customer-data tools (Databricks has also invested in it); Addepar, which offers data tools for investment professionals; and Tecton, a machine learning startup that Databricks later acquired.

When selling AI, address the “four Cs”

Tavakoli-Shiraji groups enterprises’ main concerns and objections into four categories he calls the four Cs: context, choice, cost, and control. Context means an AI that can be trained “like bringing on a new employee,” he says, learning the company’s terminology, processes, priorities, and so on.

Choice is the freedom to switch AI models rather than be tied to a single provider. Cost is about controlling how much the AI product will cost to run. Control involves the safeguards that govern the AI’s behavior and protecting sensitive information.

Attack the expensive legacy systems enterprises think they’re stuck with

Tavakoli-Shiraji jokingly asks CIOs where they stand with AI on a scale of one to five. A one means employees merely have access to ChatGPT, and a five means the company has adopted new AI capabilities that have changed its business processes.

“And everybody loves picking, ‘I’m three leaning towards four.’ But 99% of the ones I talk to are in bucket one and two.” Enterprises still haven’t figured out how to deploy AI agents in ways that create value beyond allowing engineering teams to write code. “It’s going to take many, many years before people can actually properly deploy AI in a very meaningful way in the enterprise.”

One big opportunity for startups to bring that value is to modernize expensive legacy systems. “If you go to any bank today, they still have [an IBM] AS/400 and mainframes,” he described. “Nobody wanted to touch it because nobody knew what that code did.”

But today, AI agents “can go in and understand and actually decompose what that code does.” That, he says, opens the door to products that do everything from adding modern interfaces for those ancient systems to replacing them altogether.

Tavakoli-Shiraji also shared his predictions for the future of enterprise AI adoption, along with an anecdote of what happened when the company was young and he pretended to be a lawyer to land a big enterprise contract. See the full interview below.

Watch out, YouTube — Instagram goes from short-form to 90-minute videos
NEWS link
If you could have 1 million followers on any social media platform, which would you choose? There is a correct answer, and it’s YouTube, assuming you’d like to get paid for your work. But Instagram’s latest update could upend YouTube’s long-held position as the most lucrative platform for creators, if only Instagram plays its cards right.

Instagram announced on Monday that it’s testing a new type of video upload that will allow creators to share “Features,” videos up to 90 minutes long. After years in which every social platform (even LinkedIn!) aggressively pursued short-form video, this is a notable shift in strategy for Instagram.

Short-form, vertical video content has defined the internet of the 2020s, but the creators behind these clips don’t actually make much money directly from platforms like Instagram — the Meta-owned platform has some monetization tools like subscriptions, but it doesn’t typically pay creators on a per-view basis.

“You can get paid by the platform directly, you can get paid by a fan, and you can get paid by a brand,” Instagram head Adam Mosseri explained on the Colin and Samir Show, an interview show about the creator economy. “And right now, the way that it works on Instagram primarily is you primarily get paid by brands. Some people get paid by fans. We have still a small performance-based program, but … we spend more money than we make back by a long shot, and so it doesn’t really make sense to scale up because we’re just burning capital.”

YouTube’s payment model is more straightforward: There are ads on videos, and creators enrolled in YouTube’s Partner Program get 55% of the ad revenue YouTube earns from their videos. That adds up. The platform said last year that it paid more than $100 billion to creators, artists, and media companies in the previous four years.

Instagram and TikTok haven’t been able to replicate YouTube’s model with short-form content, which is inherently trickier to monetize than longer videos because there’s less room to place ads. Many creators see those accounts more like promotional arms for their YouTube channels than meaningful drivers of revenue.

Instagram is encouraging creators to upload longer videos, as it already did eight years ago with the now-defunct IGTV. It’s possible that its parent company, Meta, which makes its billions on advertising, will put ads in those long-form videos, too.

If Meta does add ads, could Instagram meaningfully compete with the YouTube Partner Program for the first time?

“It’s too early to share a long-term monetization model, but we’re exploring ways for creators to earn from brands, fans, and Instagram, including performance-based incentives,” a Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch. “Over time, we think there will be compounding benefits for creators to tell new stories, reach new audiences, and find new partners, which should lead to many monetization opportunities.”

It’s not a particularly promising answer, but it’s also not a no.

Mosseri explained in a video announcement why the platform is suddenly embracing long-form content after scrapping its old video product, IGTV.

“For a long time, I have been against doing long-form video on Instagram,” Mosseri said, noting that shorter content like Reels drives more shares and DMs among users. Instagram VP of Product Tessa Lyons, who has been advocating for this change, finally convinced Mosseri to give long form another shot.

“Reels is still going to be a core part of Instagram. But when you want to go deeper with the creators you love and the content that they’re creating, you should be able to do that on Instagram,” Lyons said in the video.

In other words, Instagram would rather keep fans on its own platform to enjoy both short- and long-form content from a creator than lose them to YouTube. Instagram is testing a feature called “Clips as Reels,” which lets creators make Reels out of their long-form content. The Reels link viewers to the longer video. Viewers can also save the longer video to send to the Instagram app on their TV.

Instagram is currently testing “Features” and “Clips as Reels” in Brazil and will now expand to the U.S. in a small test. The platform is also working on improved discovery features for Live video and a hub on a creator’s profile for episodic Reels, meaning a series of connected Reels similar to TikTok’s playlist feature.

“The thing that the team has been working on that we’re excited to share with you is trying to make it so that the short-form and the long-form video can be symbiotic,” Mosseri said. “We’re going to try to support these different types of formats, both in the mobile app, but also on the TV app, which I think is … going to take some time to get right. But I’m actually very excited about it, and we’re very committed to it long term.”

Uh-oh, it sounds like the iPhone Duo keeps cracking and users aren’t happy about it
NEWS link
In Brief

The launch of the iPhone Duo, Apple’s hotly anticipated foldable phone, is off to a rough start. The phone was announced at this year’s Surprise and Shine event, with Apple promising that it had finally gotten a notoriously tricky form factor right.

Now, however, Bloomberg reports that early Duo users have been complaining about screens cracking “after just hours or days of use.” Some users have reported hearing a loud crunching noise, followed by the appearance of a crack. Others have reported display malfunctions.

404 Media has also reported that early adopters are dealing with “big fat creases down the middle of the [$2,000] folding screen.”

TechCrunch reached out to Apple for comment and will update this story if it responds. The company told Bloomberg that it was “aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units.”

Creating a functional foldable phone has long been an ambition in Silicon Valley, but many of the models released so far have suffered from similar maladies. Apple promised that it had cracked the code, but these early complaints suggest it may not have solved the problem after all.

Fusion startups are giving the government shares in exchange for awards. Is it worth it?
NEWS link
The U.S. government has long had an on-again, off-again relationship with the fusion power sector. As of last week, it’s definitely back on.

Helion and Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) received awards totaling $260 million from the Department of Commerce under the CHIPS and Science Act, the 2022 law that funds domestic semiconductor development, to develop advanced semiconductors used to help power and control their reactors. Helion landed $175 million, while CFS reeled in $85 million.

But as with many recent government awards, these come with strings attached. Helion and CFS have agreed to give the government nonvoting shares in return. With these awards, the fusion industry is finally getting the government’s attention, though maybe not the sort it envisioned.

In the past, government support for a startup meant nondilutive capital, meaning money that doesn’t shrink existing investors’ ownership percentages, while giving the company a bigger war chest. Investors loved the deals because it meant their startups got more money without them having to pony up. The government doled out the cash to boost American innovation, though it also meant that, in most cases, the government didn’t directly benefit when it picked a winner.

The Trump administration has been pushing to change that calculus.

Small awards with big consequences?

For both companies, the total dollar amount pales in comparison to how much each has raised. CFS has raised about $4 billion, while Helion is close behind with $3.2 billion in committed capital. The awards are perhaps more important as signals that, after years of cutting and then trickling out fusion funding, the U.S. government is back in the game.

Fusion, which generates power by fusing atoms together as the sun does, is an expensive endeavor, requiring exotic materials, sophisticated computer modeling, and complex manufacturing. Progress over the last decade has attracted private investors who have bet more than $14 billion that one or more companies will be able to put a power plant on the grid.

Yet according to the Fusion Industry Association, the sector’s trade group, that’s still not enough to beat other countries in the race. Last year, the trade group called on the federal government to inject a one-time infusion of $10 billion into the sector, with $5.4 billion intended for fusion startups.

“Other nations are moving aggressively to accelerate their commercial fusion industries, pouring billions in state-backed efforts to win the race to fusion power,” a spokesperson for CFS told TechCrunch. CFS is a member of the Fusion Industry Association. “The $10 billion ask is designed to build out the research infrastructure in the DOE’s Fusion Roadmap and be catalytic for the U.S. domestic fusion industry to compete with China.”

Until recently, the federal government had been dribbling out dollars for fusion. The Biden administration introduced the Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program, a Department of Energy program that pays companies as they hit technical goals, but the dollar amounts were paltry; less than $50 million was distributed in the first couple years. More recent awards were a little bigger, but still well shy of money the Fusion Industry Association has called for.

Now, with two companies getting $260 million, it looks like the lobbying may be starting to pay off, though not quite as planned as it comes from Commerce rather than the research budget the Fusion Industry Association sought, and it carries equity strings.

The Fusion Industry Association’s lobbying campaign did not include conversations about equity stakes in exchange for awards, a person familiar with the matter told TechCrunch. Yet Helion said the government will receive $175 million in nonvoting equity based on its Series G round, which valued the company at $15.5 billion. That works out to a stake of roughly 1%. The government’s stake in CFS will also be nonvoting and based on the company’s most recent valuation, which CFS has not shared publicly. That means the size of the government’s stake in CFS is not known.

“This type of structure has become more common in large U.S. government investments in recent years,” David Kirtley, co-founder and CEO of Helion, told TechCrunch in a statement. “This approach aligns the interests of Helion and the U.S. taxpayer around our commercial success.”

The CFS spokesperson echoed those comments. “This U.S. equity stake will enable the U.S. taxpayer to participate in the upside of our commercial success in exchange for investing in important research and development that supports the growth of an American commercial fusion industry.”

Not alone

Helion and CFS are the latest in a series of companies that have seen the government take a stake in exchange for federal dollars.

Last year, critical minerals supplier MP Materials gave the government a 15% stake in exchange for a $400 million investment coupled with a $150 million loan, offtake agreements (which are guaranteed purchases of its output), and profit sharing. Another critical minerals company, USA Rare Earth, gave up a 10% stake for a $277 million award and a $1.3 billion loan. And Intel set an even more awkward precedent. The Biden administration had already awarded the company $8.9 billion that hadn’t yet been paid out. Last year, the Trump administration turned that money into a roughly 10% stake in Intel. The list goes on.

Outside the U.S., Germany-based fusion startup Proxima Fusion confirmed to TechCrunch that the German government and the European Union are on its cap table. It also has received equity investments from German government-backed funds, including SPRIND (Germany’s federal agency for disruptive innovation) and DCTF (Deutsche Climate Tech Fonds).

Not every fusion startup that has worked with the government has given up equity. Thea Energy and Avalanche Energy, which have received federal awards and contracts, and Pacific Fusion, which has partnered with federal labs, confirmed to TechCrunch that they have not given the government a stake. Inertia Enterprises also told TechCrunch that it had not given the government any equity; the startup has a public-private partnership with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to commercialize the fusion technology developed there.

So far, it’s just a handful of startups that have agreed to government stakes in exchange for awards. Still, it could set the tone for the industry.

By directly investing in fusion startups, the Trump administration is signaling that fusion power is a strategic priority for the U.S. Such backing could boost investor confidence, though it could just as easily have a chilling effect on private investment. VCs will now have to weigh whether the dilution from a government stake is worth the trade-off. And what happens to cap tables in case of pay-to-play rounds or wind-downs? Who gets priority?

The fusion industry may have raised billions of dollars in recent years, but it will need billions more to deliver on its promises. Federal awards used to be no-brainers when it came time to scale up. Now they’ve grown more complicated. Will the new bargains be worth it?

This startup’s self-driving excavators help dig up $600M in new funding
NEWS link
Bedrock Robotics has raised $600 million in a funding round that values the autonomous vehicle technology startup at $4.1 billion, marking a speedy ascent for the two-year-old company.

The Series C round, co-led by CapitalG and Emergence Capital, comes two months after the startup reached a key milestone: moving its autonomous excavators beyond testing and pilot programs and putting them to work on active construction sites.

Bedrock Robotics has developed a self-driving kit that can be retrofitted onto construction and other worksite vehicles. Excavators outfitted with Bedrock’s autonomous-driving tech are now commercially operating at a Nevada-based water treatment facility, an earthwork site run by Champion Site Prep in Texas , and a 1.2 million-cubic-yard civil sitework project with Zachry Construction Corporation.

Bedrock has raised nearly $1 billion since it was founded in 2024 by a group of autonomous vehicle and robotics industry veterans. Co-founder and CEO Boris Sofman previously led Waymo’s now-shuttered self-driving trucks program. Sofman also co-founded and led Anki Robotics, the maker of the popular Cozmo consumer robot, which shut down in 2019.

Other co-founders include Waymo veterans Kevin Peterson, Bedrock’s chief technology officer, and Ajay Gummalla, who serves as Bedrock’s vice president of engineering and infrastructure. Tom Eliaz, who previously worked at Segment and Twilio, is also a co-founder and VP of engineering and hardware.

The fresh capital will help Bedrock accelerate its transition to commercial work. The company plans to deploy its technology at more construction sites, while expanding the teams and infrastructure needed to support customers in the field.

“We have proven that fully autonomous excavators can perform real work of value alongside the crews and workflows already in place on job sites. The next challenge is delivering that capability to more contractors as a dependable part of how projects get built,” Sofman said in a statement.

Bedrock is particularly focused on autonomous excavators, in part because of a growing shortage of skilled operators. It takes five years or more to master operating an excavator, according to Bedrock. Meanwhile, a growing number of construction workers are approaching retirement age. The Associated Builders and Contractors, a national construction industry trade association, estimates that more than 40% of construction workers will retire in the next five years.

Bedrock is betting that the industry will increasingly turn to autonomous driving tech to help close that labor gap.

The startup’s newest partner is Haydon, an Arizona-based general contractor that plans to use Bedrock-equipped machines across a range of projects, including advanced manufacturing facilities, water and wastewater plants, data centers, and healthcare facilities.

New investors US Innovative Technology Fund (USIT), Bessemer Venture Partners, and Temasek participated in the round, alongside existing investors 8VC, Georgian, Valor Equity Partners, Xora, Eclipse, Perry Creek Capital, and Nvidia.

The startup also announced two executive hires as it scales commercial operations. Amy Jones Satrom, a veteran of Amazon, Nuro, and Uber, has joined Bedrock as its vice president of operations. Lando Juarez, formerly head of legal for Uber’s autonomous mobility and delivery business, was hired as general counsel.

Anthropic’s IPO filing reveals its strategy for keeping enterprise customers hooked
NEWS link
Anthropic is building the same kind of cross-product ecosystem that helped make tech companies like Amazon and Uber enormously sticky, and its S-1 suggests the strategy is working. More than half of customers spending at least $100,000 annually now use both the Claude platform and a first-party app like Claude Code or Cowork, up from about 30% at the end of last year.

“The speed and depth of our enterprise customer adoption are powerful evidence of Claude’s position at the frontier of AI,” the S-1, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, reads.

As of September 30, Anthropic recorded more than 11,900 customers spending at least $100,000; more than 1,900 customers spending upward of $1 million; and about 250 customers spending $10 million or more annually.

Anthropic attributes customer momentum to a “significant usage expansion as customers realize the value of deploying Claude across their organizations,” which drove net revenue retention of about 900% as of the end of the third quarter.

Throwing shade at the entire legacy SaaS industry, Anthropic pitches Claude as not a “static product that serves a single use case,” but rather “frontier AI with rapidly advancing capabilities” spanning the models, the developer platform, and the applications users interact with directly.

“An advance at any layer compounds across all three layers, accelerating the pace at which we can deliver more capable intelligence,” the filing reads, calling this “integrated approach” the reason more customers use both the Claude Platform and first-party apps.

The playbook is familiar. Uber began by selling rides but has expanded into food delivery and freight. With AWS, Amazon drew in customers with cloud computing services before expanding those relationships into storage, databases, and other offerings, making the ecosystem increasingly hard to leave. Like those companies, Anthropic doesn’t have to sell each product to a brand-new buyer: A business that starts with the API can deploy Claude Code to their engineers and then Cowork to their broader workforce.

Those app users become far more valuable. In the third quarter, the highest-spending 5% of Claude Enterprise customers who used Claude Code spent about 20x as much per month as the average enterprise user who didn’t use the coding tool, per the filing. The finding demonstrates how much room there is for per-user spend to grow, and illustrates why Anthropic is keen to get its applications into the accounts that start with the API.

Anthropic said it amplifies that organic diffusion by investing in Applied AI teams. An internal Applied AI team works with startups and enterprises to help place Claude inside customers’ existing technology stacks, and the company recently launched a separate venture with Blackstone and other private equity firms, dubbed Ode with Anthropic, to embed forward-deployed engineers into businesses to build bespoke AI tools with Claude.

Anthropic also leans on its third-party distribution partnerships with hyperscalers AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Under what the filing calls a “joint go-to-market approach,” Anthropic holds the direct contractual relationship with customers and pays each cloud provider a fee, which the company says lets it “avoid channel conflict” and “set pricing.”

Anthropic’s budding stickiness strategy may become essential as the AI giant seeks to constantly “reinvent our business” by releasing “new classes of products whose aim is to dwarf the economic value of our existing ones.” The company says it will devote less effort than a typical business to “entrenching our current products and business models, and more effort to defining new ones.”

The filing also flags headwinds, despite impressive revenue growth of $16.3 billion for the first half of 2026, up from $1.2 billion in the same period last year. The cloud partnerships that help sell Claude are increasingly seeing Anthropic as a competitor, which Anthropic says could lead to difficulties securing the compute it needs from them. The filing states that Amazon, Google, and Microsoft may prioritize their own requirements or rivals they’ve invested in.

Customer concentration is another risk.

“Any adverse change in demand from our largest customers … could adversely affect our business and prospects,” reads part of the risk factors section. “As a result, a significant reduction in spending by, or the loss of, one or more of our largest customers, if not offset by new customer relationships or increased business from our other existing customers, could adversely affect our business, financial condition, and results of operations.”

Anthropic did not immediately respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.

SpaceX locks in $40B GPU financing deal with Apollo
NEWS link
SpaceX has reached a binding commitment for roughly $40 billion in financing for AI chips and related data center equipment, the company disclosed in a regulatory filing Monday. In a statement, SpaceX called the deal the “largest committed GPU financing”.

Under the agreement, an entity managed by Apollo Global Management, the New York-based private equity giant, will buy the chips and related server hardware, then lease the equipment to SpaceX. The leases will last about five to five-and-a-quarter years, beginning when each tranche of equipment is delivered, according to the filing.

SpaceX expects the deal to close by year-end, subject to closing conditions, with leases starting in the first half of 2027 as the GPUs and related equipment arrive.

The financing gives SpaceX another way to fund its rapidly expanding AI ambitions without relying solely on traditional debt markets.

“This lease diversifies our funding sources and addresses a notable portion of the funding required to deliver on our growth plans,” SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen said in a statement Monday, noting it is seeing “less than one-year payback periods” on its AI infrastructure investments as it scales compute to power Grok and its cloud services.

Apollo said the financing will help deliver Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin chips for SpaceX’s “terrestrial compute buildout.”

The financing comes as SpaceX ramps spending to expand its AI infrastructure, alongside its Starlink and launch businesses.

The financing follows a blockbuster third quarter for SpaceX’s AI business. SpaceX’s AI segment, which includes the Grok chatbot, the Cursor coding tool, and its cloud compute business, outperformed investor expectations in the third quarter and brought in $7.6 billion of SpaceX’s $14.6 billion in revenue, more than Starlink and rocket launches combined.

Capital expenditures also surged to nearly $20 billion, up from $6.9 billion a year earlier, as SpaceX races to expand its compute footprint. CFO Bret Johnsen said on the company’s October 20 earnings call that SpaceX expects to spend $35 billion to $40 billion in the fourth quarter alone.

The massive lease comes after a tumultuous stretch in the debt markets for AI infrastructure players, as investors grow squeamish over runaway capital expenditures and limited profits.

While SpaceX had no trouble tapping Wall Street, Musk used the $40 billion announcement to take a victory lap over pure-play AI compute rivals.

Pointing to SpaceX’s “investment-grade” status and steady cash flow from Starlink and rocket launches, Musk argued on Sunday that debt markets have largely closed the door on companies without major revenue streams outside of AI data centers — spelling trouble for the more than 200 neocloud companies built solely to rent out GPUs for AI workloads.

“That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation,” Musk wrote on X. “Some will make it through, but not many.”

Microsoft offers buyouts to around 60,000 employees
NEWS link
Microsoft is offering buyouts to around 60,000 employees, the company confirmed to TechCrunch on Monday. The move marks Microsoft’s latest efforts to cut costs and rework its workforce for the AI age.

Microsoft’s chief people officer, Amy Coleman, sent employees a note about the buyouts, which was also published on the company’s website.

Employees at the vice president level and below on select teams in the United States, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom will be eligible, according to the note. Bloomberg reports that divisions including Xbox, Windows, Copilot, and Finance are participating in the buyout offer. Some employees, including those working in data centers, sales and marketing, are excluded.

The news was first reported by Business Insider.

“The Voluntary Exit Offer reflects an important part of how we’re evolving our approach to change: creating greater flexibility and, where possible, more ways for employees to shape their next chapter,” the note to employees reads. “This offer gives eligible employees who may be considering a future outside the company a new choice to make that transition now with support.”

The company said eligible employees would be receiving an email with a link to their Voluntary Exit Offer details on Monday. The terms of the buyout will be similar to Microsoft’s standard severance.

“The Voluntary Exit Offer is new for us,” the note reads. “We’ll learn from it. At the same time, we’ll keep helping people focus on the work that matters most, build new skills and, where it makes sense, find new opportunities across Microsoft. There is no one-size-fits-all approach for every team or every employee. These are a few of the ways we’re trying to meet different business needs while continuing to create opportunities for our own people to grow and contribute.”

The buyout offer gives Microsoft a way to reduce its workforce without resorting to the more disruptive approach of mass layoffs. It’s also not the first time that the company has offered buyouts. Earlier this year, Microsoft offered buyouts to retirement-age employees, with more than 30% of the roughly 8,750 eligible workers accepting.

Microsoft’s headcount as of the end of June was 223,000.

Update 10/26/2026 11:21 AM PT: The article was updated to include additional details from Microsoft.

Anthropic officially files for its public debut
NEWS link
After weeks of leaked S-1s, Anthropic finally filed for an initial public offering on Monday, setting the stage for one of the most closely watched public debuts in modern U.S. history.

Anthropic, which plans to list under the ticker “ANT,” recorded revenue of $16.3 billion for the first half of 2026, up from $1.2 billion in the same period last year, according to the firm’s latest SEC filing.

That revenue came off the back of an operating loss of $693 million, an improvement from the $2.1 billion in operating losses that Anthropic recorded in the first half of 2025. Anthropic’s net loss, however, hit $80.7 billion, which was largely driven by noncash accounting adjustments tied to convertible debt. The company says it “may not achieve or sustain profitability in the future.”

The filing also provided more color on the scale of Anthropic’s enterprise business. As of the end of September, Anthropic had more than 11,900 customers spending $100,000 or more annually; 1,900 customers spending $1 million or more; and about 250 customers spending $10 million or more.

As previously reported, Anthropic’s governance structure will enable Anthropic’s seven co-founders to maintain control once the company goes public. Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, Tom Brown, Jack Clark, Jared Kaplan, Sam McCandlish, and Christopher Olah will make up the “Founder LLC,” which will collectively control 50.1% of shareholder voting power — a move Anthropic says is designed to preserve the company’s AI safety mission, per the filing.

Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust, established in 2023 to ensure the company pursues its public benefit mission, will have the authority to appoint most of the company’s board.

The governance structure is controversial because it means voting power is not proportional to the founders’ economic ownership, and therefore public shareholders will have little practical control over a company building technology that, by its own admission, poses “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity.”

Anthropic hasn’t yet disclosed how much it hopes to raise nor its proposed share price.

NEWS link

NEWS link

西方有句諺語「A bull in a china shop」帶著水牛去逛玉器店——製造混亂。

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

《TAIPEI TIMES》 China trying to isolate Puma Shen: source

China is attempting to isolate Democratic Progressive Party Legislator and Taipei mayoral candidate Puma Shen (沈伯洋) by pressuring people and businesses associated with him, a source familiar with national security cases said after a celebrity’s statement denying support for Taiwanese independence.

Television host Kevin Tsai (蔡康永) faced a backlash from Chinese authorities and Internet users after on Oct. 4 attending an event marking the opening of Shen’s campaign headquarters. Tsai on Sunday night in a post on Chinese social media apologized, saying that he had never supported Taiwanese independence.

Beijing cannot easily use the Chinese market to pressure Shen directly, so it is targeting Taiwanese entertainers and companies that attend his events or appear alongside him, the source said yesterday.

By threatening their commercial interests, Beijing hopes to deter others from participating in Shen’s campaign and limit his ability to secure resources and support, they said.

Tsai had attended Shen’s event to familiarize himself with Shen ahead of a potential interview with the candidate, Tsai’s manager said.

However, business partners in China continued to distance themselves from Tsai.

The pressure could lead businesses and people to avoid even routine professional interactions with political figures, as the risk lies not only in what a person says but also in which events they attend and who they appear alongside, the source said.

If potential supporters become reluctant to meet a candidate, accept invitations or publicly collaborate with them because of their business interests in China, the candidate loses not only potential campaign surrogates, but also opportunities to explain their positions and attract new supporters, they said.

Beijing has said that it would target people and businesses associated with political figures, they said, citing the Chinese government’s investigation and penalties against Taiwan’s Far Eastern Group in 2021.

At the time, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said businesses would not be allowed to make money in China while funding people it described as advocates of Taiwanese independence. It also identified affiliated companies and financial backers as targets for punishment.

Shen yesterday said the timing of Tsai’s post denying support for Taiwanese independence appeared to have been determined by outside forces, adding that it showed signs of Chinese interference in Taiwanese people’s ability to make their own decisions.

He was referring to the statement issued a day before his opponent — Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), who is seeking re-election — was slated to launch his campaign headquarters.

Tsai, who previously said he would attend the event, showed up yesterday.

Shen said that Tsai was the top trending topic on Chinese social media yesterday, adding that topics in the top three positions on the platform’s trending list were generally determined by Chinese authorities.

Regardless of whether Tsai had been directed to issue the statement, the incident showed signs of Chinese intervention, Shen said.

The interference was not necessarily in the election itself, but in Taiwanese people’s ability to make their own decisions, he added.

Chiang yesterday said he respected Tsai’s post and political position, adding that he would not accept threats against people because of their political views.

In local media, Tsai’s post was widely compared to a 2016 incident in which Taiwanese K-pop star Chou Tzu-yu (周子瑜), more commonly known as Tzuyu, issued a video apologizing for holding a Republic of China (Taiwan) flag on television.

Chiang was asked about the comparison and whether the controversy could affect his election campaign.

Chiang said he welcomed Tsai’s attendance at the opening of his campaign headquarters, adding that regardless of whether Tsai or any other citizen supports him, he respects their opinions and is committed to serving them as mayor.

Chiang also criticized the tendency to attack, boycott or ostracize people because of their differing political views.

“I absolutely will not permit or accept such anti-democratic intimidation,” he said.

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

歷史學家Richard Cockett在2015年出版的《Blood, Dreams and Gold: The Changing Face of Burma》中,形容殖民時期的仰光曾是繁榮的國際商業城市,足以與加爾各答、新加坡、檳城及上海相提並論。

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link
