Fewer mothers to appear in court days after giving birth under new guidance
NEWS link
The number of mothers going to court for child care proceedings within hours or days of giving birth will be reduced after new guidance was issued to judges.

The changes follow concerns about the increasing number of urgent applications brought to family courts for newborn babies where there is a safeguarding concern.

A recent BBC investigation highlighted the issue after hearing of the traumatic experience for mothers having to attend court while recovering from labour.

Under the new guidance issued by the Judiciary, same-day hearings should only be granted if a child's immediate safety is at risk to ensure intervention is "focused on cases that genuinely require it".

In October, the BBC reported the number of children involved in care proceedings before they reached their first birthdays was at a persistently high level across England, based on research from the universities of Lancaster and Oxford.

More than half of urgent care hearings in England in 2024-25 were for newborns, where mothers had to attend court within days of giving birth, or even potentially on the same day.

While there are cases where it is unsafe for parents to continue contact with their children, experts told the BBC's File on 4 Investigates that many babies may not have needed to go into care if support had been in place.

Since very young children who go into care are more likely to be adopted than older children, there are concerns from experts that some may have been permanently separated from their birth families unnecessarily.

Following a consultation, new guidance instructs courts to be rigorous in refusing to deal with cases that do not meet the criteria of urgency.

The expectation is that it would be extremely rare for an application to be made for a same-day hearing, the new guidance states.

It outlines that a same-day hearing should only be sought if a child's "immediate safety" would be compromised without the court's intervention.

Research from the Nuffield Family Justice Observatory found that over 70% of care proceedings involving babies in England were emergency hearings within two days of an application being made.

Emma Smale, its head of practice and policy, described the new guidance as a "welcome focus" on the issue.

She said the number of newborn babies in care proceedings in England and Wales subject to a same day hearing had doubled over a decade - from one in 10 in 2012-13 to one in five in 2022-23.

Smale said the process of separating a mother from their baby when they have just given birth is "widely accepted as deeply traumatic for all involved", and called into question the fairness of making "profoundly life-changing decisions" when a parent cannot effectively participate in the proceedings.

Under the new guidance, applicants for emergency or short notice listings - which take place within five days - will be required to justify with evidence why a case needs such a listing.

If a judge does not agree with the level of urgency, the case will be given a standard listing between days 12 and 18.

The Judiciary said the guidance is intended to help ensure parents and guardians "have time to respond more effectively to the application" and urgent judicial intervention is "focused on cases that genuinely require it".

A Newborn Baby Protocol has also been issued, which aims to provide a "greater level of fairness for child and parents" when care proceedings are issued immediately after the child's birth.

In England, early referral and assessment by local authority children's services will ensure the "timely provision" of preventative help, which should include identifying and strengthening family network resources, where this is in the child's best interests.

The protocol also states that before making any care order application, a Family Group Decision Making Meeting must be offered to parents, in line with the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026.

Bowen: Trump's loss limits powers at home, but it will likely be different abroad
NEWS link
In the weeks leading up to the midterms the deployment of US forces and Trump's own, often belligerent, statements ramped up talk that the US was getting ready to go back to war with Iran.

On the eve of the elections, the US carried out a limited bombing raid on an Iranian island in the Gulf.

Before he was hospitalised with a stroke, the US Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat, went to a classified briefing about potential military options for renewed war with Iran.

Without going into detail, he condemned the plans as "insane", warning that they would trigger a "devastating escalation".

There has been speculation that the Americans have plans to bomb civilian infrastructure.

Not only would that be likely to constitute a war crime, it might also be answered by devastating Iranian strikes on equivalent targets on US allies in the Gulf. Its list of potential targets could start with the United Arab Emirates, which is as close to Israel as it is to the US.

The regime in Tehran watches political developments in the US closely. It has not concealed its satisfaction that the consequences of its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz have become a domestic political issue in the US.

Tehran is aware of the damage caused to Trump and the Republicans by the sustained rise in the prices of everything (from petrol and diesel to agricultural fertilisers) caused by the war and its attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Speaker of Iran's parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, posted a warning on social media.

He said: "Conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message. If the US govt betrays their public will to serve international paymasters and blackmailers, it will learn our NO comes with a Nightmare."

Benjamin Netanyahu, now acting prime minister of Israel after its election last week, and manoeuvring hard to form a new government, has repeated that he wants to bring down the Islamic regime in Tehran.

Reports in Israel and the US say that he is pushing Trump to go back to war.

Netanyahu does not have the seats to form a new government with his outgoing coalition.

But if a major war restarted and was sustained, and if Israelis came under direct fire, he could have new options of forming a unity government that he would use his considerable political skills to dominate.

What Democrats can and can't do with their new power after taking Congress
NEWS link
Election night was a fever dream for Democrats. In January, reality will set in.

They had a reason to be giddy on Tuesday night: Next year, Democrats will take control of both chambers of Congress after a blowout victory.

"Today begins the great American comeback," an ecstatic Hakeem Jeffries, House Democratic leader, declared.

After months of promises on the campaign trail — to investigate corruption; lower the costs of healthcare, groceries and petrol; and curtail the Iran war — they will now begin the much tougher process of putting plans into action.

A shift in the balance of power in Washington doesn't necessarily mean Democrats will immediately get to start checking items off their legislative wish list. Democrats have Congress, but Republican President Donald Trump still has the power to reject legislation.

The Democrats should not consider what just happened "a mandate," US Senator Chris Coons told the BBC, warning that the party was still "deeply unpopular".

"We need to prove we can get stuff done, actually deliver answers to their concerns and questions about low wages and rising costs in particular."

How voter shifts in Texas helped elect a Democratic senator and governor

History was made in Texas on Tuesday with two stunning victories for the Democrats. For the first time in history, Texas elected its first Latina governor, and the first Democrat governor since 1995. It also elected its first Democratic senator since 1988.

These results follow a widespread public pushback against President Donald Trump's handling of his first two years back in office.

Ukraine says bodycam video shows deadly Russian double-tap bombing
NEWS link
The bodycam footage was released by Ukraine's national police on Wednesday.

It shows huge devastation after the first bomb strike on the village in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, as shocked local residents stare at the rubble.

Severely damaged buildings are also seen.

A voice of a military official is then heard on a two-way radio warning police on the ground of more glide bombs being launched towards Kamyshuvakha.

"Quickly [go] to the shelter!" one of the police officers tells local residents, who are seen walking into the shelter - at least two floors underground.

Seconds later the shelter is hit, and the recording stops.

Ukraine said the shelter was near a local school, which was being used to distribute humanitarian aid.

BBC Verify has confirmed the video was filmed in the same place as footage released by the Ukrainian state emergencies service DSNS showing the aftermath Monday's attack in Komyshuvakha.

In a post on social media on Wednesday, Zelensky said that "nine aerial bombs were dropped by the Russians.

"First, they hit people who came to receive humanitarian aid, and then rescuers and police officers who arrived at the scene."

The Ukrainian president added that "unfortunately, there has been very little reaction from the world to this insane attack", describing it as yet another of "thousands" of war crimes committed by Russia.

Ukraine's DSNS earlier posted another video showing a huge crater left after the attack on Kamyshuvakha.

The Russian military has not publicly commented.

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

In a separate development on Wednesday, Zelensky said he talked "in great detail for an hour-and-a-half" with US President Donald Trump's peace envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner ahead of trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, Russia and the US on 10-11 November in Abu-Dhabi.

The Ukrainian leader - who is currently making a surprise visit to Spain - also said his team had a separate "meaningful" meeting in Brussels with representatives from the US, the EU, France, Britain, Germany, as well as Nato and the World Bank about "post-war reconstruction".

He added that the meeting in Belgium's capital would continue on Thursday to discuss "security guarantees" for Ukraine.

Since the trilateral talks aimed at ending the war were suspended in February, Moscow has stepped up attacks as Kyiv virtually ran out of Western-supplied interceptors to defend against missiles.

Analysts expect no major breakthrough when the talks resume in the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

Jesus de Miguel: Canary Islands mourn loss of Tenerife forward
NEWS link
As you arrive on the holiday island of Tenerife, there is a profound sense of grief, pain and disbelief at the death of footballer Jesus de Miguel.

The Canary island is in mourning for the Tenerife striker, who died from injuries sustained in a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a match on Monday.

The 30-year-old had quickly established himself as a club favourite, scoring 11 goals in his first season as Tenerife were promoted to the second tier of Spanish football.

But now the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez Stadium has become a shrine to the player, with hundreds of people gathering throughout the past few days to lay flowers, light candles and pay their respects.

Bouquets, rosettes sent by clubs from across Spain, prayer cards, photographs, children's drawings and scarves have been laid around the grounds outside gate nine.

It is a deeply moving scene. Fans and residents stand in silence, taking in the tributes.

Many are visibly tearful as the scale of the loss begins to sink in at the very place the incident happened.

Chris Mason: The US elections will change Trump – how will Burnham react?
NEWS link
And it is noticeable that the British government's public reaction is grounded too in the consequences of the war with Iran: the cost of living.

"I feel the world has an opportunity now to unite around the issue that is affecting us all and that's the cost of living," the prime minister said.

"But I can't get people's cost of living pressures down until the conflict in the Middle East is resolved, the conflict between in Ukraine started by Russia."

Within government the Iran war and its consequences, particularly on energy prices, is widely seen as the biggest individual contributor among the many factors currently driving up the cost of living.

And, bluntly, it is one that puts many, including many of America's allies, in alignment with many in America, Democrat and Republican, who when asked why these elections went as they did, point at the prices displayed outside any petrol station.

Speaking before the votes in America were counted, the Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband reflected on this when I spoke to him on BBC Newscast, external.

When I asked him specifically if he feared that a domestically humiliated Trump may prove more belligerent internationally, it was to the Iran war the foreign secretary referred.

He didn't offer a direct answer to my question, but chose instead to say this: "I know that one of the biggest responsibilities of the whole government, frankly, is the cost of living situation at home, and we know one of the biggest contributors to the cost of living situation is, frankly, the conflict."

"The Strait of Hormuz being not exactly closed, but not properly open, not free flowing, and that is hitting families at home," he said.

"We know that we need a diplomatic way out of this conflict, and so that is one of the things that we're working on. It's something I talked to the U.S. Secretary of State about at the G20, and it's something we continue to work on," he added.

The foreign secretary met Marco Rubio at the meeting in Atlanta last week.

But the big question for the British government, and so many others, is does defeat at home make it more likely that President Trump gets angrier abroad?

Or, do America's traditional allies, the UK, the European Union, Canada, Australia and others feel more strident and willing to work with Donald Trump's domestic political opponents to try to challenge and restrain a weakened president?

The answers to these two final questions will determine much in world affairs in the next couple of years.

Brigitte Bardot inheritance row deepens after private letter to partner leaked
NEWS link
A row over the inheritance of late screen legend Brigitte Bardot has intensified after a private letter was made public which appears to show her cutting off relations with her last partner.

Dated November 2022 – three years before she died at her home in Saint Tropez – the hand-written note accuses Bernard de Chiara, her companion of more than 30 years, of "patiently destroying me day after day".

The leaked letter is a useful weapon for the other side in the Bardot legacy battle - the animal rights foundation that bears her name - which is accused by de Chiara of rushing to dispose of her estate without regard for friends and intimates.

A week ago de Chiara, who is 85, was forced to leave the seaside house known as La Madrague which he shared with Bardot from the early 1990s.

After being looked after financially by her for so many years, he is reported to possess neither a bank account nor a social security card.

He was also furious after the Brigitte Bardot Foundation organised a sale in September of household objects mainly taken from the late actress's Paris flat. The sale raised nearly €1m (£835,000), shared between the Foundation and Bardot's only son Nicolas Charrier.

"I found it extraordinary that just a few months after Brigitte's death, they already wanted to make a souvenir out of her. I did not appreciate that one bit," de Chiara said.

In the letter, which begins "Bernard, it's a failure!", Bardot said she had given "everything" in the hope of finding a "companion would could offer back my love, share my joys and immense sorrows... who is happy at the life I am giving him."

But she concluded: "Today I have reached the end-point of my distress... I am so in need of a shoulder, a support, a tenderness, a presence – which you are incapable of giving."

Widely known under the adopted name d'Ormale (a pun on the French dort mal – sleeps badly), de Chiara was a businessman and one-time associate of far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen.

British man infected with Ebola in DR Congo to be flown back to UK
NEWS link
A British man who has tested positive for Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo will be flown back to the UK.

It is the first confirmed case of a UK national contracting Ebola during the most recent outbreak of the rare but deadly virus in DR Congo, which has so far led to more than 5,000 deaths.

It is not clear when the flight will take place.

Earlier, a UK government spokesperson said there were "well-established procedures for dealing with cases like this" and that the risk to the public remains low.

Reuters news agency reported the infected man is a healthcare worker, citing an internal document BBC News has not seen.

Imported Ebola cases are extremely rare in the UK and have resulted in no deaths.

There have only been four confirmed cases of the virus in the UK - one, in 1976, resulting from a laboratory incident, and three involving health workers who were responding to an outbreak in West Africa between 2014 and 2015.

A UK government spokesperson said: "The UK has well-established procedures for dealing with cases like this, and those processes have been activated.

"Further information will be shared in due course as appropriate. The risk to the UK public from Ebola remains low."

There have been more than 10,000 confirmed cases since the recent outbreak in DR Congo started in May, which has grown to become the second most deadly recorded spate of infections, behind the outbreak in West Africa.

It has since become the deadliest in the country's history, with a fatality rate of 48.6% reported at the end of last month.

Jesus de Miguel death: Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono experiencing 'most difficult days of my life'
NEWS link
FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono says he is experiencing "the most difficult days of my life" after the death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel.

Tenerife player De Miguel, 30, died after suffering a serious injury in a collision with Owono during a Spanish second division match on Monday.

The world of football has paid tribute to De Miguel, a father-of-one who joined Tenerife in summer 2025, with a minute's silence being held at all games in European competition this week.

Owono's club issued a statement on the goalkeeper's behalf on Wednesday, explaining the 25-year-old "wishes to share a few words personally".

"These are the most difficult days of my life," Owono says in the statement.

"I struggle to find the words, and it is very hard for me to come to terms with what has happened.

"I feel enormous pain over the loss of Jesus. I think of him, his family, and everyone who loved him.

"I know there will be many issues to address, and I will face whatever comes with the utmost respect. But right now, honestly, I cannot think about anything other than Jesus and the pain we are all experiencing.

"Rest in peace, Jesus."

Earlier on Wednesday, FC Andorra team-mate Lautaro Spatz defended Owono and said he "would never intentionally hurt anyone" and had been "deeply affected" by De Miguel's death.

Writing on social media, centre-back Spatz said Owono was devastated.

Spatz paid tribute to De Miguel, then said of Owono: "Those of us who know him know the kind of person he is, how much he is suffering at this moment and that he would never intentionally hurt anyone.

"In football, unfortunate incidents can happen but no-one could imagine that one of them might end with such tragic consequences."

Players from FC Andorra held a minute's silence before a voluntary training session on Wednesday. Owono was not at the session.

Palestine Action ban undermined confidence in anti-terror laws, Supreme Court told
NEWS link
The banning of Palestine Action has led to a "crisis in confidence" in the UK's anti-terrorism laws and triggered unprecedented civil disobedience from law-abiding protesters, the Supreme Court has been told.

Opening a major legal challenge to the group's proscription last year, lawyers for co-founder Huda Ammori said that no other protest organisation had been treated the same way.

They told the five justices that the UK's highest court had never before had to consider whether banning a group under terrorism legislation was compatible with freedom of speech and protest.

Twenty-seven protesters were arrested outside the Supreme Court on Wednesday as the hearing took place, the Metropolitan Police said.

Lawyers for Ammori told the court that thousands of elderly people, many veterans of other radical causes, had been arrested for holding up signs supportive of the group since its proscription.

Home Office figures seen by the BBC indicate that there have been more than 4,000 arrests so far at protests in which people have held up signs supportive of the group.

In practice, many demonstrators have been arrested more than once, with 1,200 charges authorised by prosecutors to date. Those trials are in limbo until the outcome of this case.

Henry Blaxland KC told the court that "far from depriving Palestine Action of the oxygen of publicity" and "far from discrediting its brand", proscription of the group has had the opposite effect.

"All it's done is to pour fuel on to a fire of one of the most publicly-contested issues of our time," he said.

"It was disproportionate to do that and in my submission completely unnecessary."

During often tense exchanges with the judges, Ammori's team accepted that Palestine Action could not be described as an ordinary and peaceful protest group.

They said that its members had carried out "direct action" protests by occupying or vandalising firms linked to Israel's military - with only three of 385 incidents assessed by the Home Secretary as constituting an offence under the Terrorism Act.

The UK's definition of terrorism includes incidents of serious damage to property for a cause - and at least two break-ins at defence firms have been described in criminal courts as having caused millions in damage.

Raza Husain KC, for Ammori, said that the judges had to put aside allegations of criminality - for which the state had many powers - and consider whether the Home Secretary's decision to label the group as terrorists had been disproportionate.

"Palestine Action was proscribed on the basis of less than one per cent of its actions over five years assessed as falling within the outer limits of a definition of terrorism," he said.

"The Home Secretary's own experts confirmed the vast majority of its direct action would not constitute an act of terrorism on the basis that any damage to property is typically more minor. Common tactics include graffiti, petty vandalism, occupation, and lock-ons."

One Palestine Action member has been convicted and jailed of fracturing a police officer's back with a sledgehammer - but the court was told that the group had never advocated such violence.

UK government to outlaw new North Sea drilling
NEWS link
The UK government has moved to ban any new exploration for oil and gas in the North Sea.

The Energy Independence Bill would remove the North Sea Transition Authority's ability to grant new oil and gas licences.

The legislation will not affect the decision on whether to allow drilling at Rosebank off Shetland - the UK's largest known untapped field - which was approved in 2022 before being subject to legal challenges.

The UK government said it was upholding Labour's 2024 manifesto vow not to issue licences for new oil and gas fields, as well as underpinning its commitment to reducing global warming.

The Conservatives described the bill as "dangerous" and accused Labour ministers of being "totally oblivious to the economic and energy threats this country faces".

SNP energy spokesman Graham Leadbitter said the legislation was "designed to exploit Scotland's energy" and reinforced the case for independence.

Cocaine overtakes heroin as leading cause of drug deaths in England and Wales
NEWS link
The number of deaths from cocaine use in England and Wales has nearly quadrupled in a decade, overtaking those attributed to heroin for the first time.

Cocaine was linked to more than one in five drug poisoning deaths registered in 2025, more than any other single substance, with charities blaming its increased purity and availability.

Meanwhile a record 115 ketamine-linked deaths were registered, almost twice as many as in 2024, according to Office for National Statistics data, external.

The overall rate of drug deaths fell for the first time since 2012. But experts pointed out regional inequality was growing, with the rate of such deaths more than twice as high in the North East as in London.

There were 5,519 drug poisoning deaths registered in 2025 in England and Wales, the equivalent of 92.4 deaths per million people.

Of these, cocaine was mentioned in 1,233 cases - slightly fewer than the previous year but higher than the 1,210 deaths linked to heroin or morphine, which also marked a fall from the previous year's level.

However, deaths linked to opiate and opioid drugs combined were still higher. The ONS also said there was a lag between deaths occurring and being registered.

The fatality rate fell from 93.9 deaths per million people a year earlier, representing the first annual decline since 2012.

In September, National Records of Scotland said drug deaths there had risen by 11% in 2025 on the year before, marking the worst mortality rate in Europe,

In May the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency said drug-related deaths rose by 7.1% between 2021-23 and 2022-24, external.

Zelensky gives Melania Trump Ukraine's highest award after Oleshky ceasefire
NEWS link
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has given the country's highest award for women to the US First Lady, Melania Trump.

The Order of Princess Olha, 1st Class, was awarded to Melania Trump for her "significant personal contribution to humanitarian support for Ukraine", according to the presidential decree.

It comes after the end of ceasefire in Ukraine's southern region of Kherson, which allowed for the evacuation of several hundred people from the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky.

Russian and Ukrainian delegations - made up of ombudsmen who were involved in the evacuation mission as well as senior officials - are due to meet at the White House on Thursday on Melania Trump's invitation.

The White House said that Melania Trump had "independently initiated engagement between the two warring nations and successfully secured a ceasefire".

"This achievement marks an unprecedented diplomatic initiative by an American First Lady", it added.

Both the Russian and Ukrainian sides repeatedly thanked Melania Trump for brokering the ceasefire, though neither elaborated on the nature or extent of her involvement.

The delegations travelling to the White House on Thursday will include Ukraine's human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and his Russian counterpart Yana Lantratova, as well as Ukrainian MP Davyd Arakhamia and Russian senior official Kirill Dmitriev.

Lubinets and Lantratova travelled together into Oleshky last week, in an unusual show of cooperation between Russian and Ukrainian officials.

Arakhamia, a Ukrainian MP who heads Zelensky's party in parliament, has previously been part of the Ukrainian negotiating team during peace talks with Russia.

He was responsible for informal contact between the White House and Moscow during the ceasefire, according to diplomatic sources quoted by Ukrainian media, and has confirmed he will take part in Thursday's talks.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Russian delegation will be made up of Lantratova and Kirill Dmitriev, a Russian businessman close to the Kremlin who has frequently taken part in US-brokered ceasefire talks.

Dmitriev and Arakhamia are veteran participants in high-level peace negotiations, and it is unusual for meetings involving such senior representatives to be convened through an initiative led by a US First Lady.

No details of what the White House event will entail have been shared. "There are important meetings ahead," said Lubinets in a social media post while announcing he was on his way to the US.

On Thursday Melania Trump will also deliver remarks on the ceasefire in Oleshky at 11:00 (16:00 GMT), the White House website said.

Zelensky's decree also cited Melania Trump's wider humanitarian work, including her efforts concerning Ukrainian children affected by the war, as reasons for giving her the Princess Olga award.

Melania Trump has largely remained discreet on foreign policy matters, but in 2025 she said an "open channel of communication" had been established with Russian President Vladimir Putin, allowing for Ukrainian children displaced in the war to be reunited with families.

Earlier this year the UN said the deportation and forcible transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia constitutes a crime against humanity and a war crime.

According to Ukraine, almost 20,000 children have been illegally sent to Russia and Belarus since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Russian, Ukrainian and American representatives are also going to meet in Abu Dhabi next week in the first trilateral meeting since February. The talks will be focused on postwar security agreements and de-escalation, US envoy Steve Witkoff said on Monday.

Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe arrested over 'assault' during Zimbabwe luxury car smuggling probe

Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the son of Zimbabwe's late former president Robert Mugabe, has been arrested in connection with an assault case, police say.

He was one of five men arrested on Tuesday during a probe into the alleged smuggling, external of two luxury vehicles into Zimbabwe, online news site The New Zimbabwe reports.

According to local media reports, the vehicles have been seized by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission.

Mugabe, 29, is the youngest son of Robert Mugabe and his second wife, Grace Mugabe. Robert Mugabe, who died in 2019, ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years before being forced from power at the age of 93 in 2017.

All five were arrested in connection with a case of assault which happened at the Brompton Guest Lodge in Harare at about 18:30 local time (16:30 GMT) on 3 November, according to a police statement.

They are due to appear in court on 5 November.

LIV Golf: Breakaway league to wind down after potential financial backers withdraw support
NEWS link
LIV Golf is set to be wound down after its investor withdrew its support because the proposed new league failed to attract enough players.

LIV had hoped BC Partners Credit would provide a possible $300m (£223m) in financing after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) withdrew its backing in April, leading to the league filing for bankruptcy protection in September.

The funding could have helped the competition move forward in a new form, dubbed LIV 2.0, but BC Partners is understood to have decided it is not viable to pursue a deal.

While leading players such as Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia had already walked away, BBC Sport understands that those working on LIV 2.0 had received commitments from co-investors, felt support from within the golf ecosystem and had around 30 players signed up, including major winners.

But sources say the timelines ultimately proved insurmountable and they could not get the agreements they needed to move forward.

The league had been facing a deadline to show it had enough player support to continue in 2027.

The expectation is that an attorney acting for LIV will announce in a court hearing on Thursday that the proposal for LIV 2.0 is not viable.

Fenerbahce 3-2 Liverpool: Reds suffer defeat in Istanbul as weaknesses exposed
NEWS link
When it comes to comebacks, Liverpool and Istanbul have plenty of history - but this time Andoni Iraola's side made the wrong kind.

Having hit the front for a second time against Fenerbahce, when Alexander Isak nodded in after 69 minutes, Liverpool were seemingly on their way to a thoroughly impressive away win.

But Iraola's players then capitulated amid a febrile atmosphere, as spirited hosts led by interim boss Dirk Kuyt - a Liverpool hero of years gone by - pulled off a shock Champions League comeback victory.

By losing 3-2 at the Sukru Saracoglu stadium, Iraola's visitors created that unwanted slice of history: this was the latest Liverpool have ever gone ahead in a major European game and then been beaten.

Iraola described the goals they conceded as "cheap" and "messy".

As Liverpool saw three points slip from their grasp, Kuyt said his players had tapped into the mindset that has allowed the Reds to achieve so many great feats in Europe in the past.

He joined Liverpool in 2006, a year after the team's famous 'Miracle of Istanbul' comeback in the Champions League final.

"We told each other to stick together and be united. That's something I learned from Liverpool, who we played against," Kuyt said. "We made a miracle tonight - not many expected us to win."

Fenerbahce will remember this one for a long time. Liverpool will want to quickly forget it.

After winning five games in a row, Iraola's side have gone on to lose twice in four days. Arsenal on Sunday, and now this.

On the flight back from Istanbul, there will be plenty of disappointment at the way in which Liverpool failed to see this game out.

"It's frustration because it's a difficult place to come and play," said Iraola. "We were, during most part of the game, thinking we can win this one. But obviously it hasn't happened."

All three of Fenerbahce's goals came from set-pieces.

Two were scored by Englishmen.

Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood benefited from a slice of luck when his free-kick deflected in off Jeremy Jacquet in the first half for Fenerbahce's first equaliser, and Liverpool only had themselves to blame when Cody Gakpo's header took the ball past Alisson and gave Birmingham-born Archie Brown a tap in to make it 2-2.

Six minutes later, Liverpool made a mess of Brown's looping ball in the box and Vedat Muriqi beat three players in red and headed past Alisson.

"They are cheap goals. They are messy goals," said Iraola.

"It's a free-kick. It's quite far also and it's through the wall.

"Mistakes can cost you. For the last goal, it's a long throw and the first phase is controlled but after a very long ball, Muriqi wins it.

"The second goal, Cody is the one touching the ball just in front of Ali [Alisson].

"In the stadium it was almost impossible to communicate because it was so noisy. It was even difficult for me to give any kind of instruction. I suppose the communication between Ali and Cody was difficult."

A wave of intense and, at times, unpredictable storms exacerbated by the El Niño weather pattern has killed dozens, shuttered major airports and wiped out crops and infrastructure across a swathe of East Asia.

In October, nearly all of Taiwan shut down as a monster storm big enough to engulf the island of 23 million roared towards its north-eastern coast. Equivalent to a category five hurricane, Typhoon Champi's 295km/h (193mph) winds had the power to flatten homes and whip up destructive waves.

Thankfully it did not make landfall in Taiwan, skirting past the island while dousing it in rain. But it had far-reaching impacts: hundreds of flights were cancelled in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. In the Philippines' Batanes archipelago, seaside highways shut as huge waves crashed onto the shore, and in southern Japan's Okinawa islands, power was cut to 15,000 homes.

Quentin Tarantino and Kylie Minogue film movie in Porthcawl
NEWS link
Sharing a pint with Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction director Quentin Tarantino in his local pub was a surreal experience for a Welsh filmmaker.

But this was just the tip of the iceberg for Jamie Adams, who also managed to get singing icon Kylie Minogue and rapper RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan to Porthcawl for his new movie.

The arrival of the stars in the seaside town earlier this year to work on Tangled Up in Blue caused a buzz, and Adams admitted it felt like "an out of body experience" bringing his heroes to his hometown.

It is not the first time he has brought big names to south Wales, having worked with Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey on 2019 film Bittersweet Symphony.

Adams was able to include scenes in locations that mean a lot to him, including the pub his dad used to run.

"It was called the Ship and Castle then and the bar is actually a boat that he brought from Weymouth, which is where I was born," he said.

"So I've got Quentin Tarantino having a pint with me in my dad's old pub, talking to Neil, one of my old pals, who I've known since I was like eight years old.

"It's all very surreal and beautiful."

Tangled Up in Blue follows a talent manager (Tarantino) who has spent 40 years managing legends but finds himself stranded at a hotel bar caught between an old flame and a lost soul.

It all fell into place with the involvement of the superstars after Adams filmed in France last year.

51 red cards shown in Brazilian youth game between Uberlandia and Mamore

A world record of 51 red cards were shown during a chaotic under-20s game in Brazil.

The semi-final first leg of the Minas Gerais Under-20 Championship tie between Uberlandia and Mamore was marred by scenes that led to 43 players and eight members of coaching staff being sent off.

The previous record was 36, in a 2011 fifth-division game between Club Atletico Claypole and Victoriano Arenas in Argentina.

Brazilian news outlet O Tempo reported the military police were called, external because of extensive damage to the Parque do Sabia Stadium.

According to the referee's report, a brawl broke out in the second half after Mamores' Davi taunted the opposition bench during celebrations when his side went 3-1 up.

Uberlandia goalkeeping coach Paulo Sergio Dias Dos Santos ran on to the pitch to confront him, sparking clashes and the subsequent dismissals, with three players having already been sent off earlier.

The police report referenced 14 broken doors, damaged shower facilities, broken windows and that benches, tables and chairs had been destroyed.

The game was paused for approximately 40 minutes and then abandoned by referee Fernando Patrick Drosghic Modesto.

Uberlandia have since confirmed, external that they have conceded the second leg of the semi-final because Mamore only have seven players available as a result of all the red cards.

They described their move as a "gesture of fair play" as Mamore would progress through to the final, and Uberlandia will instead focus on the third-place match.

South Wales Metro £200m tram-trains sit barely used for three years
NEWS link
A new fleet of publicly funded trains that cost more than £200m still remain mostly unused more than three years after the first one was delivered.

They were initially promised to be fully up and running by 2022 but Transport for Wales' boss has said it might not be until the end of 2027 when their tram-trains will be in full service.

Data obtained by the BBC reveals that less than half of the 36 fleet - what TfW call the "final piece" in their £2bn South Wales Metro project - have passed rigorous statutory testing.

TfW chief executive James Price said he wants trains that work "100% well, 100% of the time" before putting them into full service.

AI PACs spent millions trying to shape Congress — here’s how they fared
NEWS link
Political groups both supporting and opposing the AI industry spent millions of dollars trying to influence Tuesday’s midterm elections and shape the future of AI regulation. That spending produced mixed results, with some of the most heavily backed candidates losing their races.

On the industry side, two AI-focused political action committees (PACs) that raised and spent money to influence the elections — American Mission and Building the Future — collectively spent $4.8 million to back South Carolina Senate candidate Darline Graham, who lost. American Mission is the Republican spending arm of Leading the Future (LTF), a broader political group backed by OpenAI President Greg Brockman and the VC firm Andreessen Horowitz.

American Mission also spent more than $500,000 apiece supporting Republican House candidates Aaron Flint in Montana and Laurie Buckhout in North Carolina, both of whom lost. LTF’s Democratic spending arm, Think Big, had better luck backing Florida Rep. Jared Moskowitz, who won reelection.

Groups advocating for stronger AI safeguards also saw mixed results. Public First, which is backed by Anthropic, supported several Republicans who lost through its affiliated PAC, but had more success backing Democratic candidates. It also contributed $3 million to a PAC supporting California state Sen. Scott Wiener, who was leading his race at the time of publication.

Meanwhile, Guardrails Alliance, a group that has sought to make taking money from AI companies a political liability, spent more than $1 million apiece opposing two candidates who lost: California Rep. Jimmy Gomez and Montana’s Flint. It also spent $300,000 supporting Angela Gonzales-Torres, who defeated Gomez.

It’s difficult to separate the impact of AI-related spending from the broader Democratic wave that swept Tuesday’s elections. Elon Musk, who reportedly poured half a billion dollars into supporting Republicans in the midterms, also saw many of his candidates lose. Indeed, LFT also backed some candidates it believed were likely to win, only to see them lose to the Dems.

For LTF, though, the general election wasn’t the main focus. The group told TechCrunch ahead of Election Day that it thinks primaries (the contests that choose each party’s nominee) are a more effective use of its money, because spending there can build name recognition and help candidates set up AI policy agendas.

LTF spent $27.38 million in the primaries, including $8 million alone on opposing New York Assembly member Alex Bores, who lost his bid for Congress back in June. When deciding whether it’s worth jumping into a general election race, LTF assesses how competitive the race is, whether it thinks spending could make a difference, and whether it should keep its powder dry for future elections.

Charlie Blaettler, political director of Guardrails Alliance, had a different theory for why LTF spent comparatively little in the general election.

“They don’t want their money to become an issue in these elections,” Blaettler said. He pointed to the Michigan Senate primary election, in which a pro-Israel lobbying group called AIPAC spent close to $30 million backing Democratic candidate Haley Stevens against Abdul El-Sayed. Stevens conceded the primary to El-Sayed, who went on to win the Senate seat.

“AIPAC became the story in that race,” Blaettler said. “We know people hate AI billionaires. They hate the people running these companies. They’re very distrustful and disgusted by the political spending and lobbying that the tech industry does. If they spend in a competitive race, they would just become an enormous liability for their candidates.”

The main fight among AI PACs, whether they are pro-industry or pro-regulation, is whether Congress should establish a national AI framework that override state laws, or whether states will maintain their own ability to impose safeguards.

Neither side seems poised to back down. LTF, which favors a single national AI framework, told TechCrunch it plans to keep spending in the 2028 elections, while Guardrails Allliance says it wants to keep opposing candidates backed by the AI industry.

Blaettler said that while LTF’s ads rarely touch on AI, instead focusing on popular issues for each candidate, Guardrail Alliance’s ads are specifically about who is taking money from the AI industry.

“Our goal is to make AI money politically toxic,” Blaettler said.

Nothing CEO says company’s mysterious AI-first device is dropping next month

In Brief

Nothing, the smartphone startup behind the distinctive Nothing Phone, is working on an AI product, but what it is remains unclear.

On Wednesday, CEO Carl Pei posted on X that the company’s first “AI-native product” ships in December. “It’s a tool, but one built with the personality and care that have come to define a Nothing product. It has no new screen, and it couldn’t have been an app,” Pei wrote.

Pei has teased an AI-first device for some time and the company has also said that it plans to release a pair of AI-linked smart glasses, as well as earbuds with AI integrations.

Pei’s description adds up to a screenless non-app that uses AI? He also calls it a “productivity tool.” Adding further mystique to the announcement, Pei seems to downplay any link to AI wearables.

“The whole industry is hunting for its iPhone moment: the pendant, the pin, the glasses, the companion, some magical consumer device that makes AI part of everyone’s life,” Pei wrote. “I admire the boldness, but I read this moment differently.”

No firm release date has been announced, but Nothing fans should know soon enough what the company has in store for them.

Almost no one uses AI agents to book their Uber, company says
NEWS link
Very few people are using personal AI agents to order Ubers, apparently. On the transportation giant’s third-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, the company said that only four rides were ordered through an AI agent during its busiest week in October: the week of Halloween.

While more people used an AI agent to order food through its delivery service, Uber Eats, the volume was still fairly small compared to the overall number of trips.

Uber’s chief financial officer, Balaji Krishnamurthy, told Wall Street analysts on the call that the company handled around 320 million trips and orders across Uber and Uber Eats during the week of Halloween, but only 500 Uber Eats orders were placed by an AI agent.

“It is very, very early and very limited traction that we are seeing so far,” said CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, referring to the low number of orders placed by AI agents. “Listen, we hope that there will be more traction.”

The surprisingly low numbers of AI-initiated transactions come amid growing hype for a new wave of AI agents that don’t just answer questions but also handle tasks on users’ behalf. There’s been an explosion of personal AI startups, including one of the buzziest, Instinct, which was founded last year and raised its most recent round of funding at a $10 billion valuation. Meta’s Muse also became the No. 1 app in Apple’s U.S. App Store last month, topping 10 million users, per Meta’s own reporting. The company said many were using it to shop and transact with businesses.

OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and SpaceXAI (Grok) are also now offering their own AI agents, as are numerous smaller startups.

Still, early numbers from public companies indicate the agentic web still has a long way to go. DoorDash, for instance, said last week on its earnings call that it has only received a few hundred orders from AI agents so far, as most customers are still placing orders through the DoorDash app.

Uber is seeing the same behavior, it seems. Khosrowshahi pointed out that the average time to book a ride is only 50 seconds in the company’s app, and re-ordering a favorite food only takes 90 seconds. That suggests an AI agent isn’t necessarily saving anyone time.

Despite the low number of AI-driven transactions, Khosrowshahi seemed bullish on the idea of agents in general. “We think that is another opportunity to reach our platform. We think it will be a net positive in terms of demand on the ecosystem,” he said.

Right now, there are around eight major AI assistants on the market, Khosrowshahi noted, and he expects that number to grow to more than 10 in time.

“Every single AI system company is talking to us,” he added.

Snapchat surpasses 30M paid subscribers
NEWS link
Snap has surpassed 30 million paid Snapchat+ subscribers, the company announced Wednesday in its third-quarter 2026 earnings release. The milestone marks an increase of 5 million subscribers since February, when Snap reported crossing the 25 million mark.

Launched in 2022, Snapchat+ gives subscribers access to exclusive and pre-release features for $3.99 per month. Following a successful launch, Snap introduced additional paid tiers beyond the core Snapchat+ subscription to further diversify its revenue streams. These include Lens+, an $8.99-per-month plan that unlocks exclusive Lenses and AR experiences, and Snapchat+ Platinum, a $15.99 monthly tier that offers an ad-free experience.

The milestone comes a year after Snapchat announced a controversial limit on free storage for its Memories feature and informed users it would start requiring users to pay $1.99 per month for additional storage or subscribe to Snapchat+ to retain their Memories.

“We surpassed 30 million paid subscribers across Snapchat+, Memories Storage, and Lens+,” Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said in a letter to investors. “Innovative AI-powered features have helped Lens+ exceed our expectations, demonstrating how new creative experiences can drive demand for our paid products. Paid subscribers still represent a small share of our monthly community, giving us room to grow through broader adoption and new premium experiences.”

As for the company’s broader earnings release, Snap’s shares fell 12% after missing ad revenue and user growth estimates.

Snap reported 495 million daily active users for the quarter, up from 493 million in the previous quarter. However, the figure fell short of analysts’ expectations of 499 million.

“Daily engagement has historically been stable as a percentage of monthly engagement, but we do not intend to optimize Snapchat around daily use at the expense of long-term value for our community,” the investor letter said. “A longer-term horizon better aligns our reported metrics with the product and safety decisions that strengthen relationships, create lasting utility, and support broader, more durable audience growth.”

Spiegel said in the letter than while advertising revenue growth remains below the company’s target, the company plans to prioritize improving advertiser performance and expanding the ways businesses can reach its users.

OpenAI is already trying to shape the 2028 election
NEWS link
OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane thinks the 2028 presidential election could be a defining moment for AI. And he wants politicians to start developing policies that address Americans’ concerns about the technology, rather than simply paying lip service to anti-AI sentiment and the backlash against data centers.

In a new essay, Lehane compares AI’s potential to reshape the economy to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, the 1930s set of federal programs and reforms enacted after industrialization and the Great Depression shattered the old economic order. He observes that Americans today feel similarly anxious about losing control over their economic futures and urges politicians to find a “compelling third path” that allows people to share in AI’s benefits. He lays out five policy priorities, spanning worker protections and education to AI safety and data center development.

The essay comes on the heels of a stunning Democratic victory in the midterm elections, in which Democrats flipped control of Congress amid widespread voter frustration over the cost of living. Kate Brennan, who leads AI and corporate power policy at the AI Now Institute, told TechCrunch that Lehane’s rhetoric marks a notable shift from OpenAI’s policy agenda last year, which focused on accelerating AI development, reducing regulatory barriers, and expanding infrastructure.

Unsurprisingly, many of Lehane’s proposals would encourage wider AI adoption and support the infrastructure expansion companies like OpenAI need to grow. The original New Deal established protections for workers and placed constraints on corporate power. It’s less clear how Lehane’s vision would hold AI companies accountable for the economic disruption their technology could create.

“Invoking a New Deal metaphor is to invoke state capacity to actually benefit the public,” Brennan said. “This is written by a private company that is trying to advocate for policies for its own benefit. It is ahistorical at best and harmful at worst.”

While AI wasn’t a dominant issue in the midterms, opposition to data centers emerged as a major bipartisan concern in several races in the midterms. And Lehane may be right that AI will become a bigger part of the conversation over the next two years.

Affordability is already shaping up as a key issue for the 2028 election as Americans grapple with inflation, tariffs, and the rising cost of living. AI could become an increasingly large part of that conversation as voters stress about data centers hiking up electricity bills, AI replacing their jobs, and technology’s economic gains flowing only to a handful of wealthy companies.

Lehane acknowledges many of these concerns, but he offers few concrete proposals to prevent AI’s gains from becoming concentrated. Instead, he largely pitches AI as a path to greater prosperity for Americans willing to embrace it.

Take his proposals for the tax code. He suggests incentives for workers to learn AI skills, easier capital access for entrepreneurs, and new approaches to employee ownership and profit-sharing. Those are not the same as binding requirements that would ensure workers share in AI-generated wealth or that companies pay the costs of displacing workers.

“I was struck by how much of this policy is for a future…that is already predicated on mass AI adoption and AI benefiting society, which we have yet to see,” Brennan said. “All of it is predicated on benefiting from AI’s upside.”

Brennan said it would make more sense to see things like a revised corporate tax rate or tax incentives for hiring human beings rather than automating jobs, as well as ways to keep companies from amassing outsize market power.

Lehane’s emphasis on expanding AI’s economic opportunities, rather than limiting potential harms, extends to data centers. He notes concerns about data centers while emphasizing the construction jobs and local tax revenue they could generate. He then warns that politicians who support a data center moratorium could jeopardize America’s lead over China, going so far as to compare that stance to the 2002 vote to authorize the Iraq war.

Lehane also makes child safety and education central to his proposed agenda, stressing the importance of age-appropriate protections and safeguards around AI companions for minors. He also warns against keeping AI out of classrooms, arguing that doing so could lead to inequality between wealthy students and “children in rural communities.” But the argument takes for granted that AI improves learning, a claim that remains unproven and one critics say deserves more examination than more funding or individualized attention from human teachers.

Lehane also calls for enforceable AI safety standards, independent evaluations, public oversight, and the ability to restrict AI systems or use a kill switch to shut them down — though recent studies show that OpenAI and other AI labs haven’t published comprehensive plans for what they would do if a model escaped human control.

Brennan called these stances “disingenuous,” pointing to OpenAI’s history of opposing legislation designed to impose such measures. In 2024, for example, OpenAI opposed California’s AI safety bill, SB 1047, which would have mandated catastrophic risk evaluations and shutdown capabilities. Last year, OpenAI also sought to limit state regulation, arguing that states could undermine American innovation. The company has more recently shifted some of those positions, backing several state safety laws and saying it would be open to independent evaluators embedded in the company.

Lehane also argues that people should maintain control over consequential decisions made using AI, rather than handing off judgment entirely to machines. But that raises the question of what human control really looks like in a society where humans are increasingly being required to use AI in education, work, healthcare, and government.

Throughout his essay, Lehane frames AI as a technology that could give Americans back their sense of agency and economic opportunity. But he ties average Americans’ “middle class” success to participation in an economy increasingly shaped by companies like OpenAI. Whether his policies will meaningfully redistribute power or subtly entrench it is less clear.

TechCrunch reached out to OpenAI for more specifics on Lehane’s proposals and the company’s stances, but it did not respond by the time of publication.

Meta acquires AI coding startup Conductor
NEWS link
Meta has acquired Conductor, an AI coding startup that allows users to spin up software projects by deploying multiple agents into parallel workspaces.

The news was originally reported by Axios, and Conductor shared news of its acquisition on its blog.

“I have big news: Conductor is joining Meta,” wrote the startup’s founder and CEO, Charlie Holtz, on Wednesday. “We have some big, crazy plans for the next interface,” he added, teasing that the company would have “something new” for customers to use by “early next year.”

On X, Holtz also noted that he was looking forward to working with Alexandr Wang, Meta’s chief AI officer, and Nat Friedman, head of product at the company’s Superintelligence Labs. “They’ve been on an absolute tear, and I’m convinced MSL has the highest talent density of all the labs,” he added.

Meta confirmed the acquisition to TechCrunch but wouldn’t comment further or provide additional details about the deal.

Conductor, founded in 2024, only launched its core product just last summer. The company’s agentic teams, which can be deployed in the cloud, locally, or via a user’s phone, are designed to help software engineers work on separate, compartmentalized parts of a project in concert. The agents that the platform deploys aren’t developed in-house but come from major labs like Anthropic and OpenAI.

Holtz said that, until early next year, Conductor’s core features would continue to work as they previously have. The exception is Conductor’s cloud service, which will shut down on November 20, after which the company will begin deleting user cloud data.

Meta, which previously lagged behind in AI services, has spent the last several months trying to catch up. In August, the company launched Muse Code, its own coding agent. Meanwhile, the company’s recently launched Muse agents are seeing significant adoption, with the company recently reporting that the service had surpassed 10 million users. The company has also made a number of AI-related acquisitions over the past year, including Moltbook, the viral agent platform that made headlines.

Hackers stole DreamHost customer files and inboxes during months-long attack
NEWS link
In Brief

Web host DreamHost has confirmed that hackers stole customer emails and credentials during a months-long cyberattack on its systems. DreamHost disclosed the breach last Thursday after it sparked an outage that spanned several days, during which it reset some customer passwords.

In a data breach notice filed with California’s attorney general, the web host said the attack began in August and allowed hackers to obtain session tokens, which keep users logged in after entering their passwords. If stolen, hackers can break into a system as if they were that user. The company said hackers exploited an unspecified vulnerability in DreamHost’s file manager, which customers use to store their files.

When reached by TechCrunch, a DreamHost spokesperson declined to say why the company did not detect the cyberattack until last week, citing an ongoing investigation. The spokesperson did not say what the vulnerability is. The company said it was unrelated to the vulnerabilities recently discovered in the PHP web software.

DreamHost’s spokesperson said that the number of affected customers is “well under 10%” but would not provide a more accurate figure. The web host touts some 400,000 paying customers across its network.

DuckDuckGo pitches itself to schools amid backlash over Google’s AI policy
NEWS link
DuckDuckGo is pitching itself to schools after Google created an opening for the alternative search engine. On Tuesday, Google told schools they could turn off Gemini, but it said shutting off its other AI features would cost schools Google Search, as well.

DuckDuckGo, a company that focuses on user privacy by limiting data collection, clearly sees this as a moment to make inroads in education, where Google has historically dominated. According to figures Google has published in previous years, there are around 50 million Chromebooks in schools, used by students and educators, and its Google Classroom platform serves over 150 million users globally.

On X, DuckDuckGo’s founder and CEO, Gabriel Weinberg, pointed to the company’s online documentation, explaining how schools can switch their default search engine to DuckDuckGo’s service instead, adding, “get in touch for help.”

Meanwhile, DuckDuckGo’s chief public affairs officer, Kamyl Bazbaz, issued a stronger statement, writing, “Forcing AI on school children: how a monopolist behaves when they think people are powerless. Prove Google wrong.”

Forcing AI on school children: how a monopolist behaves when they think people are powerless.

Prove Google wrong. https://t.co/Ta6ibmFdb9 — Kamyl Bazbaz (@KamylBazbaz) November 3, 2026

In an email to TechCrunch, DuckDuckGo chastised Google for its decision, adding that Google could easily turn off Search’s AI features for schools if it wanted to.

The company’s comments come as the American public is weighing how much AI they want to allow into their lives. As Tuesday night’s elections indicate, they don’t want AI data centers built in their towns. But using AI at work and school has become a common practice and requires a more nuanced discussion.

Knowing that educators have struggled with AI, Google developed technology called “Guided Learning” that is meant to help kids learn by walking through problem-solving steps rather than just providing them with an answer. But educators are still asking for tools that let them remove AI from the learning process altogether.

After the backlash on Tuesday, Google defended its decision, saying it was just responding to schools’ feedback. It said that Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Search would be off by default, and schools could choose to enable them individually.

We want to clarify what we announced today about our education services. Today’s announcements give schools more choice, not less. Here’s what we announced:

– Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Search will be OFF 🔴 by default. This is based on K-12 schools asking for more control… — News from Google (@NewsFromGoogle) November 3, 2026

The problem, of course, is that Google Search now heavily uses AI, through AI Overviews and a conversational AI Mode that answers users’ queries.

DuckDuckGo isn’t anti-AI, to be clear — it offers its own set of AI features, including a chat interface called Duck.ai and an AI search assistant.

However, unlike Google, it provides options to disable these features in both its search and browser settings, the company says. It also offers a dedicated website, noai.duckduckgo.com, where AI-assisted answers, AI-generated images, and AI feature suggestions are all turned off.

That flexibility may be driving demand for its services, as the company reported earlier this year that its app installs were up 30% as users rejected being force-fed Google’s AI Search.

Waymo confirms it’s shaking up its Uber relationship in January 2028
NEWS link
In Brief

Waymo will end its exclusivity with Uber in the Austin and Atlanta markets starting in January 2028, co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana told Bloomberg News in a report published Wednesday.

The robotaxi company will offer rides directly through its own smartphone app, like it does in other cities. Uber confirmed to TechCrunch Wednesday that it still plans to host Waymo robotaxis on its app for as long as the two companies agree. Waymo did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mawakana’s comments come after reporting earlier this year by the Financial Times that Waymo was looking to get out of its deal with Uber, which was set to expire in May 2028. Mawakana told Bloomberg that Waymo initially partnered with Uber because the ride-hail giant offered scale. But the experience for riders has been “a little bit of a crapshoot,” she said, especially because riders never know for sure if they’re going to hail a robotaxi or a human-driven car.

“It’s important for us to have that relationship with the rider. We’ve gotten that feedback from the riders in those markets,” Mawakana said.

Uber — which has many robotaxi and other autonomous vehicle partners — told Bloomberg that it was Waymo’s idea not to add an option in the ride-hail giant’s app to book a robotaxi directly.

This story has been updated with new information from Uber, and to correct that Mawakana’s comments were about the exclusivity.

‘You Can See Everything’ is getting an outer space release and it hasn’t even come out in Europe yet

In Brief

The film company behind the Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything,” A24, posted on Instagram that it granted a request from NASA to screen the film on the International Space Station (ISS).

Unless A24 is deceiving us (why would they?), it appears that some astronauts can’t wait to come back to Earth to see the film that everyone’s talking about, which has reached number one at the box office.

“You Can See Everything,” directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, initially debuted in North America with a limited theatrical rollout. The film has been so successful, though, that it’s generating demand from international audiences.

Sony Pictures acquired the right to release the film in theaters in Germany, Latin America, South Korea, and other territories, though it hasn’t announced its plans yet. The film won’t come out in the U.K. until November 20, while French viewers will have to wait until December 30.

So yes, it is currently easier to watch “You Can See Everything” in low Earth orbit than in London. These hard-working astronauts can take a break from their complex scientific research to address an equally bewildering question: Does Elizabeth Holmes really believe her own lies?

Sequoia hits rewind, undoing 20 years of expansion
NEWS link
Sequoia Capital posted a memo to X on Wednesday morning titled “The Sequoia of Tomorrow” that’s full of surprises. The firm has raised roughly $10 billion in new funds, it says. It is also closing its London office, shutting down its Arc accelerator and its Scouts program, merging its early-stage and growth teams into one, flattening its partnership, and killing the Monday partner meeting.

The framing is forward-looking, but the messaging is very much about rewinding to an earlier time when the team was smaller and focused more narrowly on Silicon Valley.

Sequoia says as much itself. The firm describes coming out of a roughly 20-year expansionary phase during which it built multiple businesses in multiple geographies and says an unintended side effect was hierarchy. Nearly everything being undone here was built during that stretch, under a succession of stewards running from Doug Leone to Jim Goetz to Roelof Botha.

One of the most surprising developments is that the firm is killing two programs that put Sequoia closest to young founders. Scouts, which Sequoia launched around 2009 and, anecdotally, half the industry has since copied in some form, gave small checks to founders and operators to invest on the firm’s behalf; it was a way to see deals through people closer to interesting new founders than any partner could be. Jason Calacanis famously pointed Sequoia to Uber through the program. Sam Altman brought Stripe to Sequoia as a scout, too. Other early scouts included Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky and Dropbox founders Arash Ferdowsi and Drew Houston.

Arc, launched in March 2022, was Sequoia’s answer to Y Combinator: a batch accelerator for pre-seed and seed founders, running several cohorts a year for seven weeks, with admitted companies getting $500,000 to $1 million up front.

Both were bets on being early and being everywhere. Now Sequoia says it wants to put more energy behind fewer people and things.

Also gone is the firm’s London office, which Sequoia opened in 2020. Several people will leave the firm as result. “We simply don’t see the need for a local presence,” the memo says, adding that Europe will keep producing “outlier founders” and that Sequoia can support them from the Bay Area. (If founders didn’t already feel pressured to move to the Bay Area or open an office in the region, they will now.)

Luciana Lixandru, hired from Accel in 2020 as Sequoia’s first partner in Europe, says she was offered a move to San Francisco and declined. (“Europe is where my family is, and where I want to build,” she wrote on X.) She says she remains a partner and will keep her board seats while investing personally in European founders.

For European entrepreneurs, the message is going to be particularly difficult to digest, especially as it follows Andreessen Horowitz shuttering its London office last year and Coatue closing its own in 2024. Sequoia didn’t say it won’t fund Europeans, but it’s definitely reinforcing here that the center of gravity is once again in the Bay Area.

The rewind extends to people, too. The memo notes that Carl Eschenbach, the former Workday CEO, is very much back in the fold (he returned as a full-time partner in March). It also says the team has “reinvigorated the GOAT,” Doug Leone.

Though the nomenclature at venture firms is all over the place — including Sequoia — the memo makes clear there are now seven general partners who primarily own and operate Sequoia: Alfred Lin and Pat Grady — who are the firm’s co-stewards — along with Andrew Reed, Shaun Maguire, Konstantine Buhler, Sonya Huang, and David Cahn, who joined the firm in 2023.

There are other changes as a result. Jess Lee, the firm’s first female partner and an early-stage investor who oversaw its Arc program, is no longer shown on Sequoia’s investor page but rather as an operator in the role of its chief product officer. Stephanie Zhan, an investor who had joined Sequoia in 2015, has meanwhile left the firm entirely, announcing last month that she is launching her own new firm.

Sequoia rarely lets anyone go entirely. Founder Don Valentine famously kept turning up at partner meetings for roughly a decade after handing over the firm. Goetz, who stepped back from his management responsibilities in 2017, is still featured on the firm’s site. Botha is the exception. He was voted out as senior steward last fall in a surprise shake-up days after sitting down with this editor — the firm framed it as a handoff to Lin and Grady — and he completely cut ties with Sequoia this summer, around the time he joined SpaceX’s board.

The changes are sure to make waves. Still, none of them are completely out of character. Sequoia iterates routinely, including, at times, reversing out of earlier moves. Most notably, in 2023, it separated from its China and India/Southeast Asia arms, which became HongShan and Peak XV, ending a two-decade run as a global franchise under one name.

The rest of the memo is structural. It says the team has decided to dispense with its “early” and “growth” team approaches and operate as one. It also notes the Monday partner meeting — a ritual at Sequoia and at nearly every firm — is finished on the theory that founders operate around the clock and their investors should, too. (These may be going away more generally. At least, in a sit-down with TechCrunch at Disrupt last month, the entire Benchmark team suggested it now mostly uses Monday meetings to socialize.)

Sequoia acknowledges the moves come at some cost. “It is scary to break something that’s already working just fine,” the memo says, and painful to say goodbye to good people. Now to wait and see if these were the right calls.

Here is Sequoia’s post in full:

I tried Apple’s Siri Recaps. They’re surprisingly useful — and a little unsettling
NEWS link
On Tuesday, Apple rolled out a potentially controversial set of Audio Intelligence features into testing with the first developer beta versions of iOS 27.3 and watchOS 27.3. The betas bring four new AI features that allow Apple Watch Series 12 wearers to detect important sounds, identify songs, catch up on conversations, and take notes.

After just a day with Apple’s Siri Recaps feature on my Apple Watch, I can already see how its value may ultimately outweigh any creepiness factor that comes from the AI-powered audio recording and summarization it provides. However, I also see areas where AI-assisted note-taking can go too far, capturing things that aren’t worth remembering, and where there’s room for improvement.

The first two, sound and song detection, don’t represent potential privacy concerns; they are designed to detect either important sounds — like an alarm or doorbell — or identify a song using Shazam’s technology. The former helps deaf and hard-of-hearing users navigate the world, and the latter is something we’ve already done with our iPhone for nearly two decades now.

It’s the two other features, Live Rewind and Siri Recaps, that have raised concerns. The features record and then transcribe or summarize the conversations happening with and around the Apple Watch’s owner. Live Rewind lets you go back to see what was said in the past 15 seconds, while Siri Recaps summarize audio throughout your day, saving notes of the important things that were said.

Apple has taken care to ensure the privacy of these AI features by processing the audio and running AI models on-device, when possible, and by not identifying speakers, storing raw audio files, and redacting private information, like government ID numbers or personal account information.

Still, some are put off by the idea that we’re now normalizing the idea that technology is always listening.

I find myself sympathizing with both camps. I often lament that we’ve allowed technology to become so pervasive in our daily lives, but I still see the value in what Apple has built.

I haven’t yet had an appropriate time to test Live Rewind, nor do I think this will be a feature I use as often. I’m more likely to say “sorry, what?” or “can you repeat that?” if I missed something that was said, before turning to my Apple Watch for help.

But with Siri Recaps, I immediately saw how this could become a feature I rely on regularly to save important notes for later.

I was able to test the feature in a real-world scenario yesterday, when we were dropping off my teen’s car for repairs and picking up a rental. At both places, employees shared a lot of information about time frames, prices, and policies that were delivered verbally. The information came too fast to stop and write anything down. Yet when I returned to Siri Recaps later in the day, it had captured key details that I may need to refer back to.

For instance, it noted the deductible, the repair time frame, the amount of gas we had in the rental at the start, and other things I wanted to remember.

One complaint is that Siri Recaps had mixed this information with other topics that were later discussed in the home, like an errand we needed to run and what time babysitting was this week, something we were discussing in order to create an appointment on the family calendar with an appropriate alert time frame.

I think these items should have been saved in a separate note titled “family schedule and errands,” rather than in the same note with the car repairs, but under a separate heading.

Because I configured Siri Recaps to run at all times, it also captured non-essential things, like our “plan” to watch the midterms coverage on TV, which is not the kind of thing you’d normally jot down a note about. It also was a stark reminder that the feature was listening in on our everyday conversations. That’s something that could feel invasive in different scenarios, if the subject being discussed was more personal in nature.

This had me considering turning off the Recap feature while at home in the evening, so family dinner table chatter doesn’t become note fodder.

While I appreciated that the Recap picked up a reminder about an errand I needed to run from one of the family conversations, other tidbits it saved — like what we were watching on TV — would only be valuable if you were exporting a Siri Recap note to Apple’s Journal app, because it was something you wanted to record for personal reasons.

I’d like to see these sorts of extraneous details saved as separate notes — or at least as dedicated sections that could be exported or deleted on their own at the end of the day.

I’d also love to be able to swipe left on an individual bullet point to remove it from the Siri Recap entirely, rather than having to enter edit mode, place the cursor, and then start deleting the text I don’t need.

Another option I’d like to have would be a setting that would allow you to automatically export any saved Siri Recap (the ones you click the bookmark icon to save) to Apple’s Notes app, instead of that being an extra step.

These Recaps could go into their own folder in the Notes app for easy reference. I can understand why this option is not the default, given how many different ways people use a general-purpose app like Notes. However, it would be useful for those of us who want to keep Notes as the central starting point for all our jotted-down reminders and to-dos.

Though I wasn’t immediately warmed up to the idea that my Watch was always listening, so to speak, I see the value of this sort of automated note-taking in daily life.

Google faces backlash for plan that would turn off Search for schools that restrict AI
NEWS link
Google was met with swift backlash on Tuesday after it announced that schools using Google’s K-12 software will not be able to use Search unless they opt in to using AI tools.

Chris Phillips, vice president for education at Google, told The New York Times that “Search and AI are deeply integrated,” so if a student’s school doesn’t opt in to using AI tools like Gemini, then students “will not have access to search, and they’ll see a message from their school that indicates it’s not available.”

Even as Google made this announcement on a busy Election Day, several left-leaning politicians took time to speak up about their concerns.

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) accused Google in an X post of “extortion,” writing that “Google is threatening schools: if you stop your students from using AI, we will cut off your access to Google Search.” Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) said on X that Google is “more concerned with forcing Gemini into schools than enabling students to succeed.”

President Trump claimed that AI oligarchs could regulate themselves because they “love our country.”

Now, Google is threatening schools: if you stop your students from using AI, we will cut off your access to Google Search.

That’s not love. That’s extortion.

PAUSE AI NOW. — Sen. Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders) November 3, 2026

Lina Khan, the former Federal Trade Commission chair and staunch advocate against monopolies, also condemned Google’s decision as anticompetitive.

“This highlights the danger of allowing an unregulated monopolist to control an essential service,” she wrote. “Multiple courts have found Google liable for violating antitrust laws, and this latest move shows it remains unchastened.”

New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani accused Google of being a monopoly, commenting, “No corporation should have the power to dictate how we teach our children.”

Google is using its search monopoly to coerce schools into adopting AI. This highlights the danger of allowing an unregulated monopolist to control an essential service.

While Search is a necessary tool for information gathering, educators worry that its built-in AI overviews could dissuade students from finding answers themselves. For millions of students required to use Chromebooks and Google education tools, using a different search engine isn’t a simple fix.

Google says that it’s working on a “Guided Learning” tool for student accounts in Search, which is supposed to walk students through the process of solving a problem or finding information, rather than just handing them the answer. If a student is struggling with a math problem, for example, the feature may prompt them to refresh their memory about the rules for dividing exponents, instead of spitting out a number.

In response to the backlash, Google pointed out in a post on X that it had listened to educators by turning off access to AI products by default and noted that schools could turn on Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Search individually.

“We know there’s concern about students using AI to shortcut schoolwork, and schools have told us they want control,” Google wrote in its statement. “That’s exactly why we are making these changes today to address the feedback we’ve heard from educators in recent months. And we’ll continue to engage deeply with educators to ensure we are giving schools more choice, more controls, and improved Search for learning.”

Titan OS raises $46 million to expand its smart TV OS internationally
NEWS link
Barcelona-based smart TV operating system maker Titan OS has raised $46 million in new funding, consisting of both equity and debt, the company announced on Wednesday.

The money comes from debt facilities provided by funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, along with existing investors like Highland Europe and Mangrove Capital Partners. The startup, which secured $58 million last year, has now raised $110 million in total. The company said that it could have chosen not to raise money and grow slowly, but it wants to be more ambitious to create more partnerships and expand into more geographies.

Titan OS’s promise to TV makers is that it offers better value from their unit sales by loading an operating system where they can generate money through partnerships with FAST channels (free ad-supported television) and ads on different screens.

The company now serves 30 million users, up from 18 million last year. This includes being a sales partner for TiVo in some regions, along with Tubi in the U.K.

Compared with last year, the startup has also added Sharp, AOC, Vestel, and Skyworth as partners. Its partnership with Philips has been a success, as the Dutch electronics maker has switched to Titan OS and ditched Google TV for its 2026 models.

The extended coverage means that it has a bigger advertiser footprint and better audience engagement metrics to offer to marketers.

“Our bread and butter is the monetization of our inventory on our own network. But the point is that we’re going beyond that. That’s why our reach has increased significantly, which then triggers the flywheel effect by also attracting more sales partners and more agencies that want to spend on our platform, whether it’s owned and operated or via our extensions,” Hyoung-Ung Kim, the company’s newly appointed CFO, told TechCrunch over a call.

In the last year, the company has increased its headcount to 250 people, and also opened an office in London to concentrate on advertising. It already has offices in Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Taipei.

With the new money coming in, the company wants to focus on a few areas. First is content discovery. It still takes everyone a long time to find something to watch. For that, it is using interface tweaks and AI to boost discovery, alongside partnering with more content providers like FAST channels.

“What differentiates us here from the walled gardens is that we do not have our own content offering. Like Google is trying to channel people to YouTube. We do not have that, and we are impartial in our role in content discovery. We are working and trying to reduce time spent searching,” Tobias Pfalzgraff, SVP of people and marketing at Titan OS, said.

Pfalzgraff also emphasized that the company is using AI to improve its ad recommendation and segmentation. While the company is dominant in Europe, it thinks that there are only a few manufacturers creating their own operating systems; more set makers would like to adopt its operating system, just like Philips did. The company also said that with increasing costs of hardware due to AI, manufacturers are thinking about long-term revenue generation opportunities as gadget sales slow down.

“The TV hardware industry is not a very profitable business. That’s why they are so reliant on partners like Titan OS that share revenue after the sale of the TV. But now, of course, the chip sets, the chip prices are increasing more and more. Right. With the AI boom, they have basically doubled down on our partnership,” Kim said.

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link

NEWS link
